👏 Let 👏 Emet 👏 Be 👏 A 👏 Flawed 👏 Bad 👏 Guy. 👏

For me, SHB was a story about loss, love, and sacrifice. The sacrifices we make for each other, for our friends and family, and how far we are willing to go to prevent loss, protect the things we love, or bring them back after they have already been lost. (And where we have to draw the line before we become the very monsters that took things from us.)

It is the combination of sympathy for Emet's loss (something we can relate to) and the horror of his subsequent actions (something utterly abominable) that makes him interesting! Sometimes people we can relate with on some base level can do horrifying, monstrous things.

He also serves as a fantastic foil for characters like Ardbert and the Exarch - two characters who, like Emet, lose their whole world (or almost entirely do) and everyone they once knew and react in similar, but also very different ways.

The irony of what Emet is doing is that he is destroying worlds to restore a world that was destroyed. He is becoming the very monster that set him upon his course: the loss of a beloved home, family, friends, and world. Ardbert nearly is manipulated along the same path on a smaller scale - he is tricked into believing that by triggering another Rejoining/killing the WoL, he can restore the First. The Exarch is effectively unmaking, erasing, and rewriting everyone existing in his original timeline to birth a whole new one.

All of these characters are a ton of fun to compare and contrast and if we paper over all the flawed or troublesome bits its by trying to sanitize everything we miss out on a lot.

It was a rather dark, but peaceful evening when Errin El-Orens of the Condor tribe passed away. However, that peace was to be short lived when a very distantly related - however personally close - relative of hers elected to make use of her impressive powers.

She was reborn, although as an undead thrall instead of the proud, independent Miqo’te she was in life- A loyal servant to her witchtress until the end of time…

Or at least until Halloween is over.
