Beauty Will Save the World

This chapter visually contrasts Eren’s version of the world and of freedom with Armin’s. Not to sound ridiculous, but the seagull is making the same “flying” pose as Eren when he declares he is free (and Eren is also depicted as “flying” above the clouds). 

The seagull appears from the opposite side of the panel and is white, in contrast with the dark colors Eren wears, showing again that Eren’s version of freedom differs from Armin’s. 

Eren has become a child and a villain, and he’s miserable. You can call that freedom if you want to, but I don’t think it is endorsed by the framing of Eren being a literal child seeing the world in bold black and whites, and children being literally murdered at his order. 

But he thinks there is no choice but to be cruel.

In contrast, we have Annie and Armin opening by discussing healing (the first line is “have your wouns healed?”), romantic feelings, and the fact that they are both monsters and good people. There is an adult nuance there, emphasized by adult!Armin seeing child!Eren:

Annie again points to the inevitable decision Armin and Mikasa will have to make: to kill Eren. She’s challenging him to take the final step to become an adult. 

Interestingly, seagulls are the first shot of the entire anime:

Armin’s version of freedom is flying, is discovery, is human connection even in the middle of horrific war, while Eren has cut himself off from all honest connections with people. The contrast between Armin/Annie and Mikasa/Eren is pretty striking: Armin draws closer to the girl he likes, and Eren brutally hurts Mikasa by attempting to gaslight her into hating him, because he hates himself. That Armin appeared in the paths dimension as an adult (and is the narrator) again hints that his version of of freedom is the one that will win in the end. 

If Armin wants a future, if he wants Annie to have a future, he has to kill Eren. 

That’s cruel. Adult nuance: cruelty and beauty, monsters and good people coinciding.

However, I am still quite sure Mikasa will remind Eren of the beauty in the world before the end, and I have hope Eren will make a beautiful choice in the end (somehow ending the titan curse). I don’t write this hating Eren–I ache for him, in fact. He’s in pain, he’s unhappy, he hates himself, but he’s refusing to protect the beauty of the world. I just hope his last choice is in protecting his loved ones’ desire for discovery and futures.

WOW! I WAS WAITING FOR THIS MOMENT SINCE CH 124 CAME OUT, AND IT FINALLY HAPPENED!!!! ARUANI STANS RISE UP!!! 

Everything about their conversation was perfect. From bringing back the “good person” topic from the female titan arc, to Armin admitting his flaws from one perspective which he hasn’t discussed with anyone else by the way. 

Annie reassured Armin that he is a good person because he doesn’t want any conflict. Which is seen by Armin wanting to talk to Eren. This is also the first time Armin has talked about his dream of exploring the outside world since chapter 89. 

Both Armin and Annie talk about their innermost thoughts to each other and not to anyone else.

“My, my, what do we have here~”, the King’s voice resonated in the throne room. His crimson eyes turned darker as he gazed at the person before him.

Kagura glared at the sadistic king of a Devil seated in front of her. Her arms strained with the struggle of trying to break free from the chains that bound her tightly. How she do badly wanted to punch that smirk right of his face.

“Shouldn’t you have a more happier expression? Had it not been for me, you would had perished in the war like your country -

"TO HELL WITH THAT! You’re the one who attacked us in the first place bastard!!”, Kagura shouted, pure, raw rage boiling inside of her. Sougo merely stated her down with a blank expression then- sighing, steeped down, slowly walking towards Kagura.

“Wh-

"Look at me. ”

Grabbing her by her chin, Sougo stared into her crystalline blue eyes, eyes which held no affection for him. He would never tell her how she stole his very heart,the moment he happened to glance upon her in that wasted country.

The torment she made him feel after that was so unbearable, a pain Sougo would have NEVER EVER allowed anyone to inflict upon him. He was one of the strongest rulers afterall, controlling an entire empire, with all its people ready at his disposal.

She was, but just a normal, headstrong girl. Yet, how DARE she steal the heart of the Devil himself.

How dare she make him fall so terribly, that he was intoxicated simply by those eyes he stared into?

“Your country was already on the brink of ruin, I simply made it quick and painless, y’know.”, Sougo drew closer, till their noses touched, his crimson hues locked onto her blue ones.

“ I am your savior. It is time you realize that. You will obey my every little whims and wishes.”

“And what the hell makes you think I’ll do that?”, Kagura growled lowly.

She still resists… “How…cute”, He thought.

Sougo’s lips now forming a full-fledged smirk, he sneered,” Oh, you WILL follow it, don’t think you’ll have an easy life until you do!”.

Chuckling, he pulls away, watching as Kagura’s expression becomes even more fierce. Her eyes radiating a desperate, powerful light. Just like a cornered beast– dangerous but so beautiful…

“Take her to her room and give her proper food and attire for the time being”.

As he turned around, Kagura shouted,” YOU WILL NEVER GET AWAY WITH THIS!!! I’LL KILL YOU, I SWEAR I’LL KILL YOU!!!”. They soon faded into a silence. 

“Of course, she hates me”, Sougo thought. But not for long.                                   He won’t give up until she feels the same torturous pain he suffered from. The same intoxicating feeling that threatened to consume hin whenever he drew closer to her.

Tracing his hand on the gold armrest of his throne, Sougo took a deep breath, feeling his heartbeat finally steadying down. How it sped up when he saw her, all  bound up before him…

Sougo smiled coldly, seating himself back at his throne. A country was merely an excuse to get Kagura’s attention, and he was sure it won’t be very long before he become the object of her undivided love.

“ If we’re going to fall either way, we may as well fall together”.
