Nyi Loro Kidul, 2020, oil on canvas, 60x54 inches Ihave painted figures in waves before, and have painted them out. In this work, the figure is there only as an apparition. The title comes from the Javanese legend of a mythological figure—the Queen of the South Seas. I learned of her when I lived in Java, and was warned that if I wear a green swimsuit, she would make me part of her undersea army. #davidmolesky #figureinwater #oceanpainting (at Parangtritis) https://www.instagram.com/p/CA2nkU7HzV5/?igshid=fqxr1oursbsq

Part of my solo exhibition with @andranorrisgallery — link in bio— Union with Stone, 2020, oil on linen, 36x48 inches over the past couple years, I've been developing a new look to my paintings that is a departure from the 19th-century finish. Experimenting with various ways to begin a painting, I've found some interesting solutions for depicting my narratives. #davidmolesky #contemporarypainting #figurativenarrative (at Upstate N.Y) https://www.instagram.com/p/CAddvIin2IR/?igshid=k48zxied4rht

40x48 inches, oil on linen, 2019 Excited to be delivering this painting to a silicon valley denizen next week. I love how this brilliant new friend could intuit that this painting dialogues with sensations in the mouth, especially while eating something delicious! #incredibleintuition #wavepainting #davidmolesky https://www.instagram.com/p/B4SNAvrnwe1/?igshid=1pyjiwvm88j44

Eclipse of an Undercurrent, 36x48inches from a sub-series called Turbulent Mirror (2010-2013) - about the changing nature of the oceans, their contents, temperatures, and currents. Had fun making this one, its goopy and I love that purplish color, its called antique pink, some variation on ultramarine, a pigment I got from Sinopia in San Francisco. #sinopiapigments #spume #turbulentmirror (at East Williamsburg, Brooklyn) https://www.instagram.com/p/B2oeSSynNi5/?igshid=102lpnb8226bz

“Creature of Boonoo Boonoo,” 2019, oil on oval canvas, 24x20 inches Boonoo Boonoo is the aboriginal name for a place without food. I visited the national park with this name over the winter (Australian summer). Since then there has been a bush fire and a massive draught. Now the same view has no plants or water. #boonooboonoo #figureinlandscape #ovalpainting (at Boonoo Boonoo National Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/B2eQF4jnLjK/?igshid=9gwvp0uf72w9

Very pleased to announce that one of my paintings was chosen by the curators for inclusion in ‘Painting the Figure Now.’ The exhibition contains many of the best figurative painters working today including @vincent_desiderio and @thebobartlett to name a few. In my painting, the way that the figure looks into a mirror while accompanied by a dog relates it to many classical depictions of Venus. These likenesses along with the strong V-shape lead me to title the piece: ‘V-ness,’ 2019, oil on linen, 16x20 inches. Another one session start. I’m at a point with these works where I want to see more of what happens when I derail myself from driving towards a 19th century atelier-type finish. I’ll share another image of this soon #davidmolesky #unfinishedpainting (at Brooklyn, New York) https://www.instagram.com/p/BzAq1tzHBHx/?igshid=iepgbod8vflg

When painter friends visit my studio, they often gravitate towards the paintings I am just starting and try to convince me to leave it, in what at first glance might seem an unfinished state. Perhaps this is because I work on the entire composition at once and develop it with a hierarchical sense, so that each successive mark is what it needs at that stage - just for the pleasure of watching it develop. If at a certain stage it feels to have something that would be lost by rendering it further, I can stop and start again on another canvas. I’ll leave this one as is.
