Hannah has said she made the biscuits Rebecca’s emotional support animal. We also know that Rupert told her what to eat all the time and Ted would never do that to her.

Ted tries to keep biscuits ready for her on the counter at home so she could have some anytime she wanted. The problem was she’d have a go at them ALL THE TIME, instead of anything else. She was trying hard to move past all the food issues Rupert had instilled in her, and her Grandmother who was concerned she “took up too much space” and commented on her growth every other month when the Weltons visited the very proper estate.

Working with a therapist (finally? still? she didn’t want to comment which) has allowed her to unpack a lot of baggage. The most recent session had focused on asking for help from those she loved.

So she asked Ted to hide the ever-present biscuits from her at home.

Rebecca’s still hard edged and aggressive, and I actually thought the show did a reasonable job of showing her increasingly willing to display her softer side to the people she cares about while still retaining that bite. It’s just that by the end of S3 after Amsterdam she chooses to direct that aggression in more productive directions than ceaseless, fruitless attempts to beat Rupert - see her chewing Roy out when nobody else is able to and orchestrating the rebellion against the Akufo League. ‘Is this a fucking joke?!’ is no less aggressive an opening gambit in a board meeting in which she’s outnumbered just because she’s wearing pale pink to do it. ‘I still want to win’ is the most important thing she says to Ted when in her flowy ‘I’m over Rupert’ dress. The core personality established in S1 remains intact.

I also don’t think Sassy is supposed to be taken entirely at face value as a fount of wisdom and therefore her take on Rebecca is not necessarily meant to be our take. It’s weird that they made her a psychologist when the writers regularly put such bad psychology in her mouth, but the writers also had Sassy describe herself as somebody who says ‘mean things to beautiful women’ and wrote Rebecca agreeing to her mother’s description of Sassy as somebody drawn to ‘wounded birds’. There’s a competitive undercurrent in that friendship that is so obviously deliberate (because it’s deliberately absent from her friendship with Keeley) that it makes me pause to question whether we shouldn’t hesitate before insisting Sassy’s view on the real Rebecca is the show’s view. Because when the show has Rebecca explicitly claim herself - ‘it’s time for Rebecca to be Rebecca’ - it’s right before she pretty viciously establishes herself as the big dog over Roy in front of the men he coaches.
