Jesus Christ Superstar (2012 Live Arena Tour)
Released: 2012
Cast:
Ben Forster - Jesus Christ
Tim Minchin - Judas Iscariot
Melanie Chisholm- Mary Magdalene
Synopsis:
The last 7 days of Jesus Christ, as told through music.
Rating: 8/10
Review:
I thoroughly enjoyed this version of Jesus Christ Superstar. I loved the costumes, and the special effects. I've never been religious, but I think that you don't have to be a religious person to enjoy this, because it is a lot like a story of a friendship that soon results in a betrayal. As I've mentioned before, I'm not a big fan of musicals, but i really enjoyed this, even though there is no dialogue in this, unless it's leading into another song. All of the cast were excellent in their roles, I loved Ben Forster's rendition of Gethesmane, and Tim Minchin's rendition of Heaven on their Minds. On reflection, there isn't really anything I disliked about this, and i don't think there's anything that could be improved.
Favourite Quote/Lyrics:
"Everytime I look at you, I don't understand
Why'd you let the things you did get so out of hand?
You've managed better if you had it planned." - Judas - Superstar
Favourite Song: Trial By Pilate

Shock Treatment
I couldn't find a streaming service for this film, but you can order a DVD online, or type 'Shock Treatment movie' into YouTube, and the video should look similar to the last two photos.

Released: 1981
Cast:
Jessica Harper - Janet Majors
Cliff DeYoung - Brad Majors
Cliff DeYoung - Farley Flavours
Synopsis:
Following the Rocky Horror Picture Show, Brad and Janet are now married. They are forced to participate in a show called 'Marriage Maze'
Rating: 8.5/10
Review:
Whilst Shock Treatment wasn't received well when it was first released, I think that it's a a good representation of the media, and its influence on the public. Although it wasn't as wild as Rocky Horror, I really enjoyed this. Richard O Brien, Patricia Quinn, and some other Rocky Horror cast members returned for this film, although they were not reprising their Rocky Horror characters. In my opinion, Shock Treatment is a very underrated film. All of the cast were great in their roles, especially Cliff DeYoung, who played 2 roles. The songs are catchy as well, my favourite is 'Shock Treatment'. One of my favourite parts in the film is when Brad and Janet lament their marriage problems through song 'Bitchin in the Kitchen'. The only thing that I didn't enjoy as much was when Janet's father sang 'Thank God I'm a Man'. Nevertheless, this was a great film.
Favourite quote:
'Hi Brad, I've just come to tell you how fabulous I am' - Janet
Favourite Song: Shock Treatment

The Rocky Horror Picture Show
Released: 1975
Cast:
Tim Curry - Dr Frank N Furter
Susan Sarandon - Janet Weiss
Barry Bostwick - Brad Majors
Synopsis:
A young couple get a flat tire on a stormy night. They discover an eerie castle, and decide to ask its owner for assistance.
Rating: 9.5/10
Review:
The Rocky Horror Picture Show is an incredible cult classic, based on Richard O Brien's stage show. Filled with amazing songs, including the iconic 'Time Warp', Rocky Horror is one of the greatest musicals ever made. I'm not a big fan of musicals, but i thoroughly enjoyed this film, and it's in my top 3 films. All of the cast give exceptional performances in their roles, especially Tim Curry, who reprised the role he played on stage, Dr Frank N Furter, who is a variation of the mad scientists from science fiction films between the 30s and 60s. Susan Sarandon and Barry Bostwick also deliver wonderful performances as a naive couple, who eventually succumb to their desires. One of my favourite parts of the film is the floorshow towards the end of the film, where you can see how Brad and Janet have developed. I also loved this part, because Frank N Furter encourages everyone to embrace themselves. However I didn't like the scene when Riff Raff hurts Rocky with the candlestick. However, I thoroughly believe that The Rocky Horror Picture Show is a must see film for anyone.
Favourite Quote:
'Don't Dream It, Be It' - Frank N Furter (from the song Fanfare/Don't Dream It)
Favourite Dialogue:
Riff Raff: You've arrived on a rather special night. It's one of the master's affairs.
Janet: Oh. Lucky him.
Magenta: You're lucky, he's lucky, I'm lucky. We're all Lucky!
Favourite Song: Eddie

Deadpool and Wolverine
Released: 2024
Cast:
Ryan Reynolds - Deadpool/Wade Wilson
Hugh Jackman - Wolverine/Logan
Emma Corrin - Cassandra Nova
Synopsis:
Wade Wilson is living a peaceful life, but he is soon recruited by the Time Variance Authority to help protect the multiverse. To save his own universe and the people he loves, he teams up with a reluctant Logan.
Rating: 8/10
Review:
With an excellent cast, filled with cameos, Deadpool and Wolverine is one of 2024's best films. I enjoyed all of the cast's performances in this film, especially Emma Corrin as Cassandra Nova. The soundtrack is amazing, including songs like Bye Bye Bye (nsync), Good Riddance (Green Day), and many more. An action packed movie, one of my favourite scenes was when Deadpool and Wolverine fought in a Honda Odyssey, whilst 'You're the one that I want' from Grease played on the radio. However, I thought that Deadpool's civilian life could have been featured a little bit more.
Favourite quote:
'The thing is, I could get you home. But, I don't want to.' - Cassandra Nova

Revolutionary Road
Released: 2008
Cast:
Kate Winslet - April Wheeler
Leonardo DiCaprio - Frank Wheeler
Michael Shannon - John Givings
Kathy Bates - Mrs Givings
Synopsis:
In the 1950s, a married couple in the suburbs struggle with their personal problems whilst raising their children.
Rating: 7.5/10
Review:
I enjoyed this film, and I think it is a very underrated film of the 2000s. I enjoyed that to friends and neighbours, the Wheelers seemed like a typical 1950s couple, but it was a different story behind closed doors, they're an unhappy couple, who want different things from their lives. All of the cast gave incredible performances, especially Kate Winslet, and I enjoyed that she wasn't a typical 1950s housewife, she was determined to speak her mind, instead of conforming to what her husband says. Revolutionary Road was the second collaboration between Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio. I enjoyed the soundtrack in this film, because the songs were quite soft, which I thought was a nice fit into the film's tone. One of the scenes I liked I the film was when Frank and April discussed moving to Paris. I enjoyed this scene, because it was one of a few scenes that didn't involve the couple arguing. In contrast, I didn't like the scenes where Frank and April both have extramarital flings, because I think that it contributed to the downfall of their marriage.

Review: Grease 2
Released: 1982
Cast:
Michelle Pfeiffer: Stephanie Zinone
Maxwell Caulfield: Michael Carrington
Adrian Zmed: Johnny Nogorelli
Synopsis:
In the 1960s, a British exchange student finds himself in love with the leader of the Pink Ladies. However, the rules of the Pink Ladies state that they can only date members of the T- Birds.
Rating: 8/10
Review:
Grease 2 was not well received when it was first released. However, when I watched it for the first time in 2020, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I prefer it more than the original, because Grease 2 shows more female empowerment, especially for the time period. During the 60s, it was common for women to have either a boyfriend or a husband. But, in one scene, Stephanie says that she doesn't want to be 'somebody's chick', showing that there is more to women that romantic pursuits, and they don't have to conform to societal expectations. In addition, I also liked that Michael was persistent enough to learn how to ride a motorbike, to try and win Stephanie's affection, so I liked that no one was forced to change who they are, they did it by choice. One of my favourite parts is when Michael rides a motorbike outside the bowling alley, capturing everyone's attention. There wasn't really a scene that I didn't like, and i couldn't think of anything i'd improve.

'I ain't no one's trophy' - Stephanie
Favourite Song: Cool Rider (or We'll Be Together)

Review: The Producers
Released: 2005
Cast:
Nathan Lane: Max Bialystock
Matthew Broderick: Leo Bloom
Uma Thurman: Ulla
Synopsis:
A remake of the 1967 film, and an adaptation of the 2001 Broadway musical. A failing producer and his accountant find that more money can be made from a show that flops, rather than a successful show. They set out to find the worst play written, the worst director, and the worst cast.
Rating: 8/10
Review:
The Producers is a delightfully hilarious musical. I found it more entertaining than the original film, because I found it more funny, and I enjoyed the soundtrack more. I'm not usually a fan of musicals, but this one is an exception. All of the cast give excellent perforkances, most of the cast reprised their roles from Broadway. One of my favourite parts is when Max and Leo visit the home of director Roger DeBris, to convince him to direct the musical. In contrast, I found the first 20 minutes quite slow, however, I did enjoy this film.

'We got the wrong play, the wrong director, the wrong cast. Where did we go right?' - Max
Favourite Song: Keep it Gay

Review: Thelma and Louise
Released: 1991
Cast:
Susan Sarandon - Louise
Geena Davis - Thelma
Harvey Keitel - Detective Slocomb
Synopsis:
Thelma and Louise embark on a road trip for the weekend. However, a pit stop at a bar leads them to unexpected circumstances.
Rating: 8/10
Review:
In my opinion, Thelma and Louise is one of the most iconic 90s films. With a great soundtrack, and an incredible cast, Thelma and Louise is a beautiful tale of friendship, female empowerment, and drama. One of the things I enjoyed most in this film was how Thelma's character developed. At the beginning of the film, she is a docile housewife. As the film progresses, she becomes stronger, eventually standing up to her husband, One of my favourite parts of the film is when Thelma and Louise blow up the lorry of a lorry driver, who was making lewd gestures at them, and refused to apologise. I enjoyed this part because it shows that women shouldn't have to tolerate lewd comments or gestures. In contrast, I didn't like the scene where Thelma is assaulted by a man that she and Louise meet in the bar, but the main plot of the film develops from that point. Nevertheless, I thoroughly enjoyed Thelma and Louise.

Review: The Silence of the Lambs
Released: 1991
Cast:
Anthony Hopkins- Hannibal Lecter
Jodie Foster - Clarice Starling
Ted Levine - Buffalo Bill
Synopsis:
A trainee FBI agent is recruited to interview Hannibal Lecter. The FBI believe Lecter could help them catch Buffalo Bill, who kills women for his own desires.
Rating: 7.5/10
Review:
Considered to be one of the best films of all time, The Silence of the Lambs was a very enjoyable film. Whilst I didn't understand all the hype around this film, I still enjoyed it. It wasn't as scary as other horror films, it was more of a psychological horror, a film that sticks in your mind for a few days after watching it. I enjoyed all of the performances in this film, particularly Anthony Hopkins, even though he has less than 20 minutes of screen time, his performance as Hannibal is probably one of the reasons why this film is iconic. I also enjoyed Anthony Heald, as the loathsome Frederick Chilton, manager of the Baltimore State Hospital for the Criminally insane (where Hannibal is incarcerated). One of my favourite scenes is when Buffalo Bill dances to 'Goodbye Horses' by Q Lazzarus. However, I didn't like the scene where a moth's cocoon is found in the throat of one of Buffalo Bill's victims. I scored this film a 7.5, because I enjoyed it, but there were parts when it felt quite slow.

Review: Heavenly Creatures
Released: 1994
Cast:
Kate Winslet - Juliet Hulme
Melanie Lynskey - Pauline Parker
Sarah Peirse - Honorah Parker
Diana Kent - Hilda Hulme
Synopsis:
Based on a true story, two teenage girls develop an intense friendship in 1950s New Zealand. When they are threatened with separation, they go to extreme lengths, in order to stay together.
Rating: 8/10
Review:
Heavenly Creatures is an intriguing tale, based on an equally interesting true story. I enjoyed this film a lot, because it was based on a true story, which happened 40 years prior to the film. The real story, the Parker-Hulme case, is one of New Zealand's most notorious crimes. I also liked that the film focused on how the friendship developed, instead of the trial. In addition, I liked that the film used real excerpts from the diaries of Pauline Parker. One of the parts I enjoyed a lot, was towards the end of the film, when the girls burn their Mario Lanza records. This felt quite significant to me, because both girls admired Mario Lanza, and I think that burning his records insinuated to me that the girls didn't need anything, only each other. Contrastingly, I didn't like the scene where a psychiatrist suggests that Pauline may be homosexual. I didn't enjoy this scene, because the film was set in the 50s, where homosexuality was considered a mental Health problem, but I am relieved that society accepts people, regardless of sexual orientation. Nevertheless, I enjoyed this a lot, even though, there were scenes of mild violence.

Review: The Dressmaker
Released: 2015
Cast:
Kate Winslet - Myrtle 'Tilly' Dunnage
Judy Davis - Molly Dunnage
Liam Hemsworth - Teddy McSwiney
Hugo Weaving - Sergeant Farrat
Synopsis:
In 1926 Australia, 10 year old Myrtle Dunnage is sent away, after an incident with a classmate. 25 years later, she returns, using the name 'Tilly'. She works as a dressmaker, wanting revenge on those who wronged her.
Rating: 8/10
Review:
The Dresssmaker is a delicious tale of revenge, and haute couture. Set in 1950s Australia, Kate Winslet gives an outstanding performance as a woman determined to find the real truth about her past, and why she was sent away. Cultural moments of the period are also referenced, including 'South Pacific', and 'Sunset Boulevard'. The soundtrack is also very good. One of my favourite parts is when the truth is revealed about what really happened in 1926, and why Tilly was really sent away. I also enjoyed a scene where Molly stands up to the village, after she hears them gossiping over herself and Tilly.
Dialogue I liked:
Sergeant Farrat: Is that Dior?
Tilly: Very good, Sergeant Farrat. My design, but Dior inspired.
Sergeant: Myrtle Dunnage
Tilly: Tilly.
Sergeant: You grew up.
Tilly: You got old.
Sergeant: Sad, but true

Review: Valhalla Rising
Released: 2010
Cast:
Mads Mikkelsen - One Eye
Ewan Stewart - The General
Gary Lewis - The Priest
Synopsis:
In 11th Century Scandinavia, an enslaved man stages a violent uprising against those who imprisoned him.
Rating: 7/10
Reciew:
Valhalla Rising is a interesting film that explores the journey of a one eyed man, and the child who accompanies him. Although there was violence at times, Valhalla Rising told a tale of Scandinavian life during the 11th century. After an uprising, One Eye and the child joined Christian Vikings, on their voyage to Jerusalem. All of the cast were very good in their roles. However, Mads Mikkelsen gave a stellar performance as One Eye, and I was intrigued by his character the most, because he never spoke throughout the course of the film. I enjoyed the film, but it was hard to follow at times. Nevertheless, Valhalla Rising was a violently entertaining film.

Another Round
Released: 2021
Cast:
Mads Mikkelsen - Martin
Thomas Bo Larsen - Tommy
Magnus Millang - Nikolaj
Lars Ranthe - Peter
Synopsis: Four school teachers test a theory that maintaining a blood alcohol level of 0.05% makes you more relaxed, and creative. They set rules to maintain (no drink driving, only drinking on workdays etc), and log the effects on their personal and professional lives.
Rating: 8/10
Review:
Another Round is a fascinating insight into how alcohol consumption affects lives. I enjoyed this film, because I liked that Martin described historical figures by their drinking habits, relating them to his students. I also liked that the positive effects became more negative over time. I really enjoyed this film, however, I think it could have been improved if there were more scenes in the pub, as it would have been interesting to see Danish drinking culture. I think my favourite scene is at the end, when Martin shows his dance skills, as the students celebrate their graduation. I enjoyed this scene, because Mads Mikkelsen was reluctant to do it, but he did it, and a lot of people enjoyed it.
Quote:
It's funny, but there's a point to this, which is important, and which I hope you'll understand sometime. The world is never as you expect.
- Martin
