I understand what you are saying. But Latinx was not invented by white Americans.

In fact, Hispanic & Latino were the terms created by white america to describe the entire lower continent while disregarding the fact that we are all diverse peoples and cultures. For decades, Latino & Hispanic was met by push back because they were terms forced to describe us.

Latinos in the US created the term Chicano to try to go away from Latino & Hispanic. It was a way to make the labels ours. Latinx, similarly, was created by queer Latinx who wanted a term that fit them. It was meant to be a term that belonged to our queer community.

I do understand the frustration since many organizations & people now use the term Latinx to seem “woke” & participate in fake allyship. But there are people who use the term because they are trying to reach that specific population.

I work for a nonprofit that serves people facing homelessness & when we use the term Latinx it is because we want to reach specifically the queer folk in the community.

In the end, we work by the platinum rule “Do onto others as they would want done to them” We survey our populations & ask what describers they want. If they want Chicano, Latino, Latinx, Latiné, Latin@, Latinæ, etc., we use the proper term. I personally go by Latine, because it easier for my family to use for me.

I do wish that the white people that came up with the term “Latinx” had realized the term “Latin (American)” was right in from of them the whole time...

If another Latino asks me to use that term to describe them, I obviously will, but the Anglo-Saxon understanding of gender is not superior to any other culture’s understanding. In your well meaning efforts to recognize trans people you don’t need to be ethnocentric
