introducing…
park mijoo, the employee at happyro who moved into the sweetheart sharehouse six months ago. we hear she’s staying in 2C, and that she wants to be a songwriter/lyricist. good luck with that.
PAST.
park mijoo was born into a predominantly average life. being a first generation korean-american, she had the simple necessities her parents could provide for her. nothing more, nothing less. mijoo, or michelle as she went by outside of the house, did not feel the need to ask for a lot regardless. having both parents caring for her was more than enough. even when her younger sister was born, she was nothing but ecstatic. unless her younger sister would seek revenge for eating the last pudding cup by cutting off her dolls’ hairs. then she’d hate her guts.
of course, what child wasn’t curious growing up. mijoo had her fair share of moments where the question, “why?” was the only thing she knew. at the age of ten, the girl noticed how frequent her mother rubbed her stomach and would visit the doctor. she didn’t understand. after all, the doctor’s office was the most dreaded place on earth. her parents were always quick to squash her qualms each time mijoo posed a question. they even got a big kick out of her, “is mom having another baby,” a bit relieved of her maintained innocence.
years passed and by the time mijoo was in high school, she began to feel the negative vibes of kept secrets from her own household. she tried her best to push them aside and live each day like normal, but she found herself getting home later than usual to avoid any eye contact. mijoo’s grades slipped often times, kicking her off the honor roll and ruining the model student image she held all through elementary and middle school. her father would scold her each time she silently acted up, the resentment towards her parents only growing. and then one day during her third year, she received a call from the principal’s office during period four biology. her mother was in the hospital for having intense stomach pain. the cancer grew to stage three.
seeing her mother having to go through chemotherapy was probably the most heartbreaking moment of her life. the most mundane daily activities would bring extreme fatigue for her mother, leaving her to do barely nothing around the house. mijoo stepped up though. she understood why her parents kept the illness hidden. for the most part at least. she learned how to cook, do laundry, basically all the housewife chores. essentially, she became one for a better lack of words. as graduation drew closer and closer, her mother put a halt to mijoo’s newly acquired lifestyle.
“i don’t want to leave you as a housewife,” her mother told her one night. the following weekend, mijoo woke up to her mother faintly playing an acoustic guitar. it was old with the strings looking feeble, but still carried a quaint tune. for the next month and a half, mijoo’s mother taught her everything there was to know about music. it was an old hobby that her mother had growing up and one that she had always wanted to make a career out of but couldn’t once moving to san francisco. “to live is to sacrifice.” words her mother would occasionally share whenever things didn’t go the way mijoo wanted them to.
playing acoustic covers of her favorite songs were all fine and dandy to mijoo, but she found more pleasure in writing her own melodies and lyrics. her mother was proud and knew the girl could make something out of it. there was passion and heart in her craft, and deep down, mijoo felt the same. the two continued to discuss the songs mijoo put together every night; each would take about two to three months before she felt it was complete as it could be. this was how they spent their time together for the next four years until her mother’s last day.
PRESENT.
she wasn’t twenty-one years old for long, just a few months, but mijoo already knew the bitter taste of death. she managed to care for her sister and father as much as she could, though quieter than usual. they noticed, but didn’t want to bring it up. she was normal…just quiet. reserved. kept to herself. she stopped anything music related which caused any negative feelings to pent up inside her. she had to leave. each day got worse, that itching feeling to just pick up and leave. there was always a tinge of guilt that pricked at her heart at the thought of leaving her father and sister behind but there was no use to trying to shake it off.
“now boarding for seoul, south korea.”
eight hours later of cramped up legs, constantly disturbed sleep, and barely eaten airplane food later, she had arrived. first thing she did upon landing was call her father. she expected him to swear at her, yell, scold, bring back old memories. instead, mijoo could hear the pain in his voice that his oldest left. he understood why she did it. he just wished he gave her a little warning beforehand. but, she did always have that kind of flighty type personality. he also told her of a place in hongdae where the rent was cheap, or at least that’s what an old school friend of his commented once. they barely kept in touch, but it was all he could remember since their last conversation. the sweetheart sharehouse. she’d just have to find a job that would pay for her rooming and also helped her save enough for college. how hard could that be?

park sooah, the ewha student + kindergarten intern who moved into the sweetheart sharehouse 2 years ago. we hear she’s staying in 2F, and that she wants to be able to live only on her commissions so she can write/draw her own manhwa someday. good luck with that.
PAST.
i.
Dad loves you from the bottom of his heart, he tells, you, he loves you so much that there’s no need for mom to get into the picture, he reassures you.
But her pictures are still on the frame beside his bed, on top of the unplayed piano in the living room. He doesn’t tell you why mom isn’t around anymore besides a vague excuse that she needed to go out somewhere for a very long time. He also always tells you don’t need to worry about anything because he’s going to take care of you, he’ll always take care of you and you, as a child of seven, feels like dad is putting too much pressure on his own shoulders so you pat them and promises that you’ll take care of him too.
ii.
mom loves you from the bottom of her heart, you know and dad tells you so, but the thing is that she just loved another man more than she loved both of you.
There are no misfortunate accidents or tragic diseases. Mom chose to leave to pursue her own happiness that wasn’t with the man she married anymore. You’re angry at first, angry and upset and you feel like throwing all those stupid pictures of her out of the window and her piano on top.
Dad still tries hard for you to know hate mom but you don’t know if it’s because out of consideration or because a part of him is expecting her to come back so they can have their family once again.
In the end you don’t have it in you to hate her because that’d mean breaking dad’s heart.
iii.
you never make a lot of friend because you never really talk and the fact that you don’t have that much of a presence doesn’t help either. Besides your dad, who seems to be the only one who knows where you are all the time. Even the teachers need to sometimes, tie you to them to make sure they don’t forget you in school excursions (after the fifth time). They give you a horrible nickname and they stay away from you because rumors start that you’d curse them if they even looked at you.
That’s why you find some refugee in drawings and cartoons, because at least they wouldn’t judge you.
iv.
your dad finds happiness again in the form of a woman when you turn 15 and then they have a new child two years later. You’re happy because he’s happy but you also start to realize that maybe this family doesn’t have a place for you anymore. The new wife of your dad isn’t bad, not really, especially when she makes him so happy and she does try to get along with you, but then the baby comes and they seem too busy with a child to look after their grown up daughter.
They don’t do it on purpose, you know they don’t. Dad still loves you from the bottom of his heart, he really does, it’s just that the baby can’t go without attention as much as you do.
PRESENT.
v.
you tell them it’s because the sharehouse is closer to the university you chose, it’s easier to get public transportation and also because it seems only right to move out. You’re officially an adult now with a ticket to university and your way seems mostly clear ahead of you.
the same way you tell them that you dyed your hair blonde as some passage ritual to the adult life and freedom from school, like a new hair, a new life.
dad loves you from the bottom of his heart, a reminder of that is right in front of you, present in the way his eyes fill with water even though he swears he isn’t crying, he promised after all. it’s in the way that he holds you tightly and how it lingers a little longer than it should like he doesn’t want to let go just yet. you try to joke and say that it isn’t like you’re moving overseas, but your voice cracks before you can even finish talking.
he reminds you one last time that dad loves you from the bottom of his heart and then he adds that you should come stop by sometimes even if you’re new university life. you promise him you will.

“hey, dad. um… yeah, i’m not really sure what to say. i’m safe though. made it here in one piece, even though you don’t really know where ‘here’ is. um. i found a place to live, applied for a few jobs, all that stuff. look, i know you’re not happy, but i am. that’s so selfish of me to say, i know, but there’s no way i could’ve stayed, okay? surely you knew that. i wasn’t meant to stay in that tiny county, i know it. like, i can just feel it in my bones – have felt it since i was, like, ten or something. i know it’s killing you that i just… took off without warning, but you wouldn’t have let me go otherwise. i’m sorry but i had t–“

“dad? where’s mom?”
“yejin…”
small fingers are wrapped around a crayon, poised over a page pulled out from yesterday’s newspaper. yejin is halfway through coloring in the sun when she looks up, confused by the way her dad sits hunched forward at the dining table, rubbing his brow in that way he always does when something big is about to tilt her world off kilter.
(yejin doesn’t realise that this might be the biggest thing yet in her four years of existence.)
“where’s mom?” she repeats. “she said we were gonna go pick flowers after lunch.”
“she’s gone, jinnie.”
“she left without me?”
yejin deflates, lower lip jutting out in a childish pout.
her father gets up and retreats to the other room.
090917
“hey, farm girl.”
“didn’t i tell you to not call me that? jesus.”
“whatever. i’m just here to pick up my dry cleaning.”

the person you are trying to call is currently unavailable. please leave a message after the tone.
“merry christmas, dad. hope you’re doing well.”
032216
“that’ll be five thousand, four hundred won.”
yejin is barely phased by the way the man practically throws the ten thousand won bill at her, fingers tapping impatiently against the counter as he watches her count out his change, drop it into his free hand, and slide over the new packet of cigarettes he’s just bought.
it’s three o'clock in the morning, and she’s barely surviving on the cheap coffee at the other end of the store. she’d be pissed if it weren’t for the fact that she and the customer share the same sentiment. yejin knows that the second the clock strikes four and her shift ends, she’ll be diving for her pack too.
“have a nice…”
the doors slide open and closed before she’s even finished speaking.
“day. or night. whatever.”
053005
“what do you want to be when you grow up?”
“i’m gonna be the female van gogh, but with two ears. and i’m not staying here. no way.”
“you’re leaving? where’re you going?”
“seoul. maybe a different country. who knows? who cares?”
“i care.”
“yeah, yeah. i know. anyway. if – i mean, when i make it outta here, i’ll write you. and when it happens, i’ll give you a vip ticket to my first exhibition.”
“you better.”
112715
“oh shit. i’m so sorry.”
“hey, watch where you’re g– woah. are these yours?”
“pfft, no. i mean… well… yeah.”
“is it no or yes?”
“that depends.”
“on?”
“whether or not you think they’re good.”
“they’re definitely good.”
“then, yeah. they’re mine.”
“are you an artist?”
“…something like that.”
061017
“what’s that on your hand?”
“what? oh, it’s just charcoal. here’s your dry cleaning.”
“you better not have got any on my clothes.”
“your clothes are safe, don’t worry.”
“what’re you doing with charcoal anyway? you trying to start a fire? who pissed you off this time?”
“no, i’m not trying to start a fire, idiot. i was just sketching some stuff earlier. chill.”
“oooh, sketching. can i see?”
“hell no.”

“yejin?”
“he-hello? dad? hey. hi. you finally picked u–”
“yejin, this is mrs. kim. do you remember me? i lived just down the road.”
“oh. yeah, of course. junghyun’s mom.”
“yejin… i’m afraid i’ve got bad some bad news…”
082217
the eery silence of her apartment has her on edge, so much so that she almost feels stifled. is she listens carefully, though, she’ll hear the quiet crackle of her burning cigarette, resting precariously along the rim of an old salsa jar, once used to dip her paint brush in, now used to catch ash. yejin is restless, fingers itching to reach for something – her pencil or her cigarette, she’s not really sure – but she can’t. not. yet. she needs to do this first.
but what really takes her breath away is the way her phone doesn’t even ring like it usually does. there’s no waiting because there’s no need anymore.
this phone number is no longer in use.
THE PRESENT.
020918
“yoon yejin.”
“sup?”
“can you put that damn pencil down for just a second and listen to me already?”
“ugh. fine. what do you want now?”
“listen. you need to get off my couch. i’m not saying that i hate your company… actually, no. that is what i’m saying. you gotta get out, dude. i can’t bring anyone over because i gotta look out for you. chicks are starting to think we’re dating.”
“pfft. as if!”
“jinnie, i’m serious. have you even looked for your own apartment?”
“course i have. everything’s just ridiculously priced and way over budget, that’s all. listen, if you wanna bring girls over, just say so and warn me in advance. i’ll go hang out at some cafe for a couple hours while you… do your business, and then i’ll come back when your done.”
“it’s not just the chicks. the fumes from your paints are starting to get to me. i feel fucking dizzy every time i walk into this damn apartment.”
“so… what, you’re kicking me out?”
“yeah. pretty much, yeah.”
“wow. just like that? after everything i’ve done for you? after all the paintings i’ve given you, dude?”
“listen. i appreciate all of that. i really do. but… god, you’re a fucking adult. you gonna find your own place already. you can’t sleep on my couch forever!”
“i beg to differ.”
“yejin.”
“alright, alright. fine. give me, like, a week and i’ll find something.”
“no need. i found you something already.”
“what? the fuck?”
“it’s right up your alley. you barely leave the apartment, but when you do, you’re always in hongdae, right? there’s this sharehouse, right in the middle of everything. and you work at that 7-eleven in hongdae anyway. also, speaking of work, an old classmate of mine says you can work at his family’s laundromat for a little while just to help with the rent a bit more. doesn’t that sound great?”
“wow. you’ve really thought this through, huh. how desperate are you to get rid of me?”
“i’m not desperate to get rid of you, jinnie.”
“really?”
“…okay, fine. maybe a little. but only because i met this girl last week down at the bar and she’s so fucking hot, dude. i’m going out for dinner with her tomorrow, and i don’t wanna bring her back here because A: you’ll be here and she might get the wrong idea, or – a worser option – B: you’ll steal her away from me.”
“bold of you to assume there’s an option other than B.”
“yeah, sure. whatever. just B. whatever you want. can you just… go?”
