I love the headband theory, so I like to think the reason Ralsei keeps his hands behind his back is because Kid Kris would draw their monstersona the same way. Hands are hard to draw.

Dess Holiday: the Girl With Hope Crossed on Her Heart
Today we'll be serving espresso with blueberry cheesecake. . .and speculation on the whereabouts of a certain Lost Girl.
Art by me
Where is Dess Holiday? This is a question that's been looming over the Deltarune fandom and one bound to be brought up by Tricky Tony any chapter now. This topic is what we'll be discussing today, so put on your best Berdly impression and equip your ShadowMantle, because we'll be exploring exactly what happened to December Holiday.
Now, I know what everyone's thinking;
"Dess is totally the Roaring Knight, I bid to Gaster! She has the code to the Shelter where the Knight went, she shares the same antlers and bat and even the baseball form the Knight turns into, Lost Girl's leitmotif can be heard in Black Knife---she's the Knight, I can feel it!"
The game has been building up something sketchy about Dess, and I wouldn't be unsatisfied should this be the case, considering this is the most likely explanation. But it isn't the only explanation.
The Shelter is actually anathema to the Knight
OK, bear with me here. The Shelter noise is clearly Gaster-related considering it bears the room_gaster Entry 17 noise 666x slowed down, the two numerics Gaster seems to be the most related to---and the voice that guides the SOUL must be Gaster as well considering the speech patterns mirror Entry 17 as well, even the inclusion of Very, Very Interesting. And if the early-death secret Knight boss is any indication, Gaster wants the prophecy fulfilled and the Knight foiled.
And more curiously, in Chapter 3's secret boss for some reason you can access a game version of the Shelter where you can find the Shadow Mantle, a defensive weapon used against the Knight. If the Knight is truly running the Shelter, why can you find the one weapon that can stop them there, in a place which emanates the same energy of the character who opposes them the most?
*Another interesting point; Alphys said the Shelter is a place to survive emergencies. Emergencies. . .like the Roaring, perhaps?
What if the Knight never actually went into the Shelter, and it opened when the Knight was running loose? What if the reason Kris and Carol don't want Susie to find the code is because they'd find something very powerful that could take their boss down?
What if the reason Dess disappeared is because she found that weapon?
Dess is the original second hero
Yeah, Toby did say when Mother 3 came to the West, Deltarune would seem unoriginal in comparison, which suggests that Dess is the Knight similarly to how Claus is the Masked Man or how Asriel is Flowey.
But remember, this is Tricky Tony we're talking about, and while I'm smarter than the average human being, compared to Tony's tricky tricks I'm but a humble peasant among humble peasants as me. And remember Gerson did tell Susie that adaptations always adapt stuff differently---one of which could be who the second hero was. Remember in Lord of the Hammer, later adapted into Dragon Blazers, Susie was referenced as 'the Dragon'.
What if the second hero was Dess Holiday? Think about it; every member of the Fun Gang seemed to be specifically created by Gaster--Ralsei was designed with the knowledge and skills, but no genuine background, as well as appearing conveniently when the Fun Gang needs him and being suitable for any Dark World without petrifying, so he might have been personally designed by Gaster for the third hero. Kris, too, was 'created' in the sense their SOUL was brought in to fulfill the first hero.
Dess seems like the outlier when it comes to the Shelter passcode, because there's no way the mayor would entrust the code to her extremely rebellious daughter. But then how did she find it? She only had one code, the latter two were given probably years after she disappeared, so it's unlikely she could've even entered.
Unless. . .it was given directly to her by someone else. Someone who is in direct control of the Shelter. That's right, Wing Gaster himself could've told Dess to come up in his crib to beat up some Knights.
Want more evidence? Well, remember that secret 1225 room? And 1225 literally means Dess Holiday? Well, it held a 'small, dark triangle' that was hard like lacquer. What other small dark triangle that's described as hard---than a Black Shard? That would mean Dess had brawled with the Knight and broke off a Black Shard before getting inevitably captured.
But what if the second hero was actually Noelle? Does make sense, considering she has a bunch of pencils which could turn into swords. But then it would be a bit dissonant considering Noelle barely appears in the Dark World and would indirectly mean Berdly broke the Prophecy by choosing her as his partner. It doesn't make a lot of sense.
So what about the Knight's appearance? Well. . .talking about the Roaring Knight would need a post of its' own, but my speculation postulates that whoever the Knight was, they weren't nearly strong enough to cause the Roaring on their own. They rely a lot on intermediaries like King, Queen and Tenna, and when they finally pull up, they look like. . .this;
they even do a sort of power-up before their fight?
It feels like the Knight just woke up from a really long nap---or because the Fun Gang's increase in strength from the previous two chapters had allowed them to return to their full strength thanks to some connection between themselves and Kris, which they likely caused. This kinda implies the Knight hasn't adopted this form until now---what if the Knight took on the antlers and the bat from their last memories of the person who did battle with them? And likely took a Black Shard from their blade?
So where is Dess now? Captured, in the Knight's clutches in possibly their super-secret crib, tangled in the strings of her own guitar.
She's most likely being used as ransom for Carol to meet the Knight's demands. If this was Carol on the phone [which I see as likely as she dropped at the house when the voice said they would], then she's becoming desperate. She needs something from Kris, possibly for the Knight in exchange for her lost girl.
Or she could've just been mowed down by Asgore. Equally possible.
So that's how he got the Black Shard.
