Few closing remarks on Tumlr
Few closing remarks on Tumlr
Tumblr just pushed another Android app update. The landscape orientation still doesn't work.
That is a proven sign that they probably not going to fix it any time soon. Or ever. They do not bother fixing crashes - what is major inconvenience in comparison?
In the one year I have used the app, they have “fixed” exactly one bug: when composing new post, crash after adding a link. After the fix, if you do not touch any other button when adding link, the app doesn't crash anymore. Touching any formatting button is still a risk factor. Or pasting the link in the middle of something else – that crashes the app half the time as before.
There is still no auto-save, which could have at least alleviated the pains caused by the stability problems. Alas.
The bug reports and suggestions over the months were answered with the blanket “thank you, we work very hard to improve everything”. Yet nothing has ever improved.
And the app still crashes on formatting the text bold/italic – just as it did one year ago.
Tumblr, in all the years of my Android experience, is by far the most trashy crashy app: no other app or game ever crashed on me as much; or if repeatedly crashed, allowed for that to go on for more than few days until update with a fix.
Worst part: Tumblr app crashes while editing/composing the messages, you might have painstakingly spent 5-15 minutes typing on the crummy tablet keyboard. (Crummy – because when composing a message, the Tumblr app always switches to the portrait orientation. Portrait orientation = narrow keyboard = very inconvenient.)
But, hey, they added text colors!! Oh. Priorities. I see. Incompetence.
Tumblr as a network?
It is a very rudimentary social network slash blog system.
It is somewhat like WordPress, but slower and with much less blog features.
It is somewhat like Twitter, but discussions are virtually impossible to have, since there is no threading.
It is somewhat like Facebook, but friend management (groups or circles) doesn't exist. You can't even search friend list.
And it is also not real-time or even properly sequential: new post being buried behind 10-20 old posts in the “dashboard” is a normal occurrence.
And it also lacks the time-stamps. You thought you found a sensational story or breaking news? Better check the dates by googling it: 2-5 year old news and sensations are often pushed to the top by the Tumblr's search.
And it is impossible to “like” a post or comment or reply – only the whole discussion. A message of peace is smeared by a pile of neo-nazi replies – who knows precisely what you have “liked” in this discussion?
Oh yeah, the search is dysfunctional too. You often can't find the post by searching its exact word-for-word title. Amateurs.
It's tough to point what Tumblr is good at
It is – at best – mediocre at everything.
It is definitely bad at hosting or publishing news (not real-time, no time-stamps, publishing delays).
It is definitely bad at discussing news (bad threading, no usable “like” mechanism).
It is definitely bad at social chatting or discussions (nonsensical threading, no friend management, publishing delays leading to missed replies).
But there is of course a bright spot. Having few restrictions on hosted materials, is what probably made Tumblr a heaven for pornographic materials. If you miss one naked photo – there are hundreds more where that came from. If you find a steamy video – it doesn't matter that it is from 10 years ago. Porn is forever.
But for political rants and activism – or even simply staying in touch with friends and family – it is certainly a sub-par choice.
And it is somewhat amazing how little has changed, least improved, in the one year I have been using the Tumblr. That, when there was at least one update every month. Useless.
P.S. LOL tumblr bans pr0n. The only valid reason to use the tumblr in the first place... Now is gone too. How appropriate.
P.S. Few final words on Brexit. My reaction to UK’s discourse about leaving EU:
https://9gag.com/gag/aNYWRRw
It has been almost 3 years now - days, weeks, if not months of their lives were wasted on the arguments - and yet the vast majority still hasn’t bothered to spend 15 minutes to learn what the heck EU is.

Just got an answer from Tumblr: the same automatic response I got when I reported crashes. So I guess nothing ever gets fixed...
No Brexit news at all; Tumblr employees are all idiots.
Instead of fixing the crashes, the apes from Tumblr Inc. broke landscape orientation in the android app. Right now the app to me is basically unusable on the tablet.
And since nothing happening in the Brexit land, there would be probably a short hiatus.
Until they fix the app. Or, if I forget that I have the Tumble it at all, it would be a long hiatus.

Ah, the United Kingdom! What a majestic place!

Meanwhile, in Nuneaton, Michael isn’t taking the news of IndyRef2 well at all…

EU is failing. Definitely failing.

So much better than the failing sinking EU!
P.S. No Brexit news today - negs are on hold, and whatever little happening is happening in tunnel. Probably would be more noise later this week, after the waves of the UK budget announcement would subside.
P.P.S. Why Scots want independence. #indyref2

But we’re seriously better together🤪

Insightful historic perspective by Joschka Fischer. Interesting take on sovereignty.
And most interesting is the forward-looking outlook, quote:
A new world order is emerging, and it will be centered around the Pacific, not the Atlantic.
I think Joschka implies USA-China tensions, with Japan stuck in the middle.
I for once welcome this prediction: that Europe wouldn't be a center of the next struggle for the world supremacy.
P.S. IMO as peace goes, we are fairly well aligned with China and its Pax Sinica. But if something would start, it is hard to imagine Europe not supporting the USA.

The German Parliament building has a glass dome above it that people can walk over. This is to remind the politicians that government should be transparent, and the people are always above them.

"Brief" report on state of negotiations, with the usual juicy details. Slow read for a slow weekend.

LOL, BoE recommended to stockpile cash before Brexit:
In einer Aufsehen erregenden Warnung, empfahl die Bank of England den britischen Geldhäusern zuletzt, ihre Reserven an Bargeld mit Blick auf den bevorstehenden Brexit aufzustocken.
Cash laying around - is very burdensome and very ominous for any financial institutions.
Yet I think people underestimate the chaos of the first days/weeks/months of no-deal Brexit. Knowledge and experience how to do the business "new" (aka old) way wouldn't suddenly appear out of nowhere - there would be a learning curve, and it would take time, on both sides of the Channel. Not even talking about the just-in-time, few weeks of delays of deliveries could easily bankrupt any business.

Current state of Brexit negotiations.
Looking ahead, quote:
If negotiations resume after budget votes at Westminster next week, a special summit could be convened in late November to sign off on a deal.
If.
