“Jirai-Kei” is Actually Another Style Entirely. Let’s Talk!
If you are seeing this post, there’s no doubt that you’ve seen a style that has accessories that look something like this:
Or full outfits that look like this:
Both of these images, from the brand Ank Rouge, are part of a broader style that is known as Girly. (ガーリー) or Neo Romantic (ネオロマンティック), if it has darker tones. But as of 2020, some would incorrectly attribute it to a “style” called “Jirai-Kei” (地雷系)
However, Jirai-Kei is not a serious style that exists, at least, not in the traditional sense. Its popularity as a “style” can be attributed to SuReRo, a YouTuber who made a video where she did a makeup style based around a “Jirai” girl. It then blew up into a makeup challenge where people would essentially play dressup as a “Jirai” girl, mostly as a joke.
This is because, “Jirai-Kei” is a misogynistic stereotype meaning “landmine type”. It refers to “crazy girls” who are hyper-controlling or who trap men into relationships because they’re desperate. Design elements of the stereotype include: women drinking Strong Zero or pink Monster Energy drinks, liking Sanrio characters (particularly Kuromi and My Melody), and of course, wearing brands like Ank Rouge, Rojita, and MA*RS.
Jirai girls are generally seen as bothersome and as something that should not be seriously emulated, hence the joking attitude of the subsequent makeup challenge. It’s first and foremost a caricature meant to belittle women. The negative connotation is the thing that separates “Jirai-Kei” from the actual styles and fashions that got lumped in with the stereotype, because it isn’t anything else.
This is also why it is important to not incorrectly label others partaking in the Girly or Neo-Romantic styles as “Jirai-Kei”. That is not the style, and they probably wouldn’t take too kindly to being labeled with a slur, either.
