“ - yeah, i had no idea why i thought this would work. ” an exasperated sigh goads vy’s lips as they click out of several spreadsheets and power off their macbook. another productive day gone to waste but, of course, due to the same tried and true reason: laziness. looks like booking this study room had been but a futile endeavor.

chest heaving into another sigh, they continue to commiserate, “ honest to god, maybe i’m too optimistic. or a dumbass. ” vy suddenly takes to pause. one hand reaches downward to pluck their vape from off their lap. “ or both. ”

rising from their seat, they tread toward the study room’s sole window, flinging back its shutters. then, lifting the vape to their lips, they inhale for a few sweet, satisfying beats.

“ how’re you holding up, ryuko? ” the inquiry is posed as vy dispels their smoke out through the window, first in a large gust and then, in smaller ‘ o ’ shapes. “ manage to get anything done, or are we in the same boat? ”

once ryuko finished setting up all of her stuff to look like she was going to shorten her to-do list, she pulled up youtube to watch the latest motorcycle trick video that her favorite channel had uploaded during class. ah, twist and— she barely managed to take out her left airpod in time to hear the beginning of vy’s monologue. she’d only known them for a short bit, but if there’s one thing she knew for certainty, it was how DRAMATIC vy could be.

“nah,” ryuko answers, shifting to cross her legs in the hard (ow! my butt!) chair. “the fact that w— you tried, is all that matters. no reason to be so hard on yourself, vy.” unknowingly, she starts twirling her pen around her fingers before pausing abruptly, causing her pen to clatter onto the table as she catches sight of the other smoking out small circles out the window.

smoke was fine. it was fine. candles were fine. matchsticks were fine. it was all FINE. and yet, a part of her heart clenched as she dug her fingernails into her fist. it was a memory she’d prefer to keep to herself, a fact that no one needed to know. why would they? it would only bring PITY and unnecessary sympathy. turn the atmosphere awkward.

“vy, put that shit up.” ryuko warned through gritted teeth. “i.. don’t want to get secondhand smoking problems or whatever.” with a pounding heart, ryuko came up with a flimsy excuse, one that certainly didn’t match the reputation she built up to protect herself. “and haha, don’t worry. same boat.”

ryuko just stares at her classmate wondering if she heard them correctly. “i know you’re quirky and different and shit like that... but keep your brain farts to yourself maybe.” she thinks for a moment before snorting and slapping vy on the shoulder, “ha...PEEPEE POOPOO RIGHTS... the fuck...theater kids are somethin’ ELSE.”.
