Naughtia Stanko Recreation Fail

At SxSW Naughtia Stanko was announced the winner of the “Laugh Star Contest”. For this contest someones laugh was chosen to be printed in 3D and shot into space. Curious, me and my friends looked Naughtia Stanko up and found that she is an artist. Her pictures were pretty weird and trippy. This series were our favorite.

Being the weird girls that we are, we wanted to try and recreate these images. We went on a whim and messaged Naughtia asking what kind of paint she used for this project and she actually replied back letting us now that she used “house and car paint, toxic as fuck”. Not being quite as adventures we opeted for nontoxic temper paint. I’m gonna be completely honest and be the first to admit that this was a total fail. We thought it would be fun to experiment with pink lights. They were cool but hard to get settings right for.

Another major challenge was the whole concept of paint. First of all spitting paint out of your mouth does not look as cool as it seemed. Second of all paint taste bad and makes your tongue feel weird and tingly. All of this is just a recipe for some squeamish unpleasant faces.We’re still trying to figure out the kinks of how to get our project to look aesthetically pleasing as hers but in the mean time here are some funny fails.

Cannupa Hanska

Cannupa Hanska’s presentation was a very entertaining one. He was an animate speaker that knew how to charm his audience. What I liked about Cannupa Hanska is that at the beginning of his lecture he told us that he didn’t one this to be a one sided conversation. This was something new for me because usually guest speakers go on and on and don’t ask for opinions from the audience until the end. One of the most interesting things I found about Hanska is that he said he would never make a piece of art more than once because he knows that this makes his work more valuable because of supply and demand. He said that art is also about economics and if you want to be a profitable artist you need to understand that.

Antelope Valley

This year we got a lot of rain in California. Because there was so much rain many reserves saw super blooms this spring. Over Spring break I made my way down to Antelope Valley, just outside of Landcaster, to see the blooms of California Poppies. It was truly breathtaking how abundant and how bright the poppies were.

Libra

Over spring break a friend and I went on a whim and got tattoos. I got the gemini constellation because my mother, sister and I are all geminis. Kayle got the Libra constellation because her sister is a libra. In astrology Libras are known to bring balance and she wanted to thank her sister for keeping her life grounded and balanced.

Project 2: Office spaces

So I work at a tax office. My boss is a private CPA and I am his only employee. I’ve had several different jobs in the past. I’ve worked at restaurants, as a tutor and in 2 separate offices. I know people always say that they don’t want to live their lives in a cubicle stuck at an office desk all day. But, to be completely honest, I love my job. I love sitting at a desk. I love having busy work. I love orginizing things. I enjoy that I don’t really have any coworkers. I love the quaintness of the office I work in. So since I spend a lot of time here I decided that I would use the space in favor of my project. Offices aren’t as boring as they seem to be. So much goes in in them and they are a holding space for so many different things, including myself for 15 hours of the week.

“Homecoming”

Explaining what it’s like coming from a military family is hard. It’s one of those things where you feel like if you share being from a military family as a common ground you feel a bond or connection with that person. Just like Cassie White’s dad, my dad joined the military at the ripe young age of 17. He was in the navy until 2012, putting him at 24 years. My dad did multiple deployments to combat zones, all a minimum of six months, sometimes more. Cassie White’s photobook is entitled “Homecoming”. Military homecomings are a very special time for those in military families. 

I really liked the second picture where you can see husband and wife reuniting. This is something I’ve seen a lot and it’s a very emotional heart warming time. I think she captured this very well because you can see the longing and how much they missed each other. I also liked the pictures of her dad playing video games because I know that’s something my dad liked to do when he got back from such long deployments, he just liked to relax and be with our family.

This photobook made me really reminisce on growing up in a military family and I think it captured readjustment of our military personal into everyday life.

Bedrooms are an intimate place. They are a direct reflection of who we are. You are who you really are behind closed doors, and usually that door is your bedroom door. Obviously the way you decorate your room showcases what you like and your personal style. But the state and setup of your room says a lot too. You can find out a lot about a person just from spending sometime in their room.
