His furrowed brow relaxed, just so. Fenris was struck quiet-- He was so unused to finding a Tevinter mage opposed to slavery, much less one that freed slaves. “You-- You did. Yes. Very well, then,” the elf says, startled and stumbling over his response.
Clearing his throat, Fenris tries to pull the mask back over his face and readdresses the mage in front of him. “I suppose, then, if the Inquisition trusts you, and Hawke trusts the Inquisition....” He shrugs. There is nothing Fenris can use to justify suspicion any longer, but still, something about the man unsettles him...not necessarily in a bad way. The entire exchange has muddled his mind.
“I did,” he acknowledges, “Quite a time ago.” He can’t help but notice the intentional deflection of his question, but he had done the same earlier, and as such he couldn’t complain. However, the more he thinks, the more his memory returns to him. He seems to recall his father mentioning an elf that looked somewhat like this one had, and the smell of lyrium was overtaking him.
Realization hits and he’s barely able to keep his face unreadable, “They did. But they did not accompany me as slaves, but as those with their own free will. Where ever they had wanted to go once out of Tevinter was their choice, and I gladly let them make it, as none should have that control over another. To answer your next question, I am against slavery as a whole.”

“I would advise you to choose your words more carefully,” he says slowly, finding a slight satisfaction in the way Anders is eager to shoo him. “Or it may sound like you don’t actually despise me. And we can’t have that.” Fenris was rather keen on rusting the mage up and enjoyed the reaction he received when implying there was something more to their antagonistic relationship.
Of course Fenris knew it to be true, but that didn’t mean he couldn’t contest. And, arguably, Anders had far more people dependent on him. Fenris owed his life to Hawke and his life was almost as good as forfeit. But his desire to irritate the mage had been satisfied and he had no other excuse to linger.
“I will go. I always need a drink after being in your presence.”
"Where were you?!?"
“Why Fenris, were you worried about me?” Anders teased, grinning at the elf, “But I sure you already had some idea as to where I was.” He wasn’t keen on telling Fenris about his activities with the mage underground. Talking to Fenris about them almost always led to arguments. “Besides does it matter? I am here now aren’t I?”

“Are they even paying attention to the lesson…”
“Goodness, no! And why would they, with stunning tutors such as ourselves?”

Fenris observes him a moment longer following the response. He no longer looks like he will lunge at the other at a moment’s notice, though, his posture is anything but friendly. “You must have taken your leave of Tevinter some time ago,” the elf grunts. He isn’t eager for more people to know him, but it is rather difficult not to stand out as a lyrium enriched elf, especially after Varric’s publication of the Tale of the Champion. Still, this man is not ‘safe’ yet.
“Tell me-- Did slaves accompany you here?” A slaver was always dangerous, especially should the recognition come later.
“Mere words they are indeed,” he begrudgingly admits, “And I would suppose that actions do speak louder than words.” Dorian knows quite well that one misstep could shatter everything he’s built up so far, and he isn’t about to take that wrong step at this moment. “You look familiar, but I find myself being unable to place where I recognize you from. Ought I know you?”

Fenris found himself irritated that the mage just brushed off his absence and the worry it entailed with an infuriating smile. He could hardly leave things as they were with his vexation.
And, of course, should Anders speak with the others, he would eventually figure out that it was only Varric that asked after him through Fenris. The dwarf had noticed the close eye Fenris kept on Anders-- Merely because it was foolish to turn your back on an abomination of course. “Capable usually implies that one remains in good health,” the elf bit out, leaning on the doorway. “And does not take ridiculously extravagant risks.” Fenris had no intention to leave until Anders was at least as irritated as he was. He deserved it.

“Mere words,” the elf says plainly, not at all affected by the man’s change in tone. “The last mage I was told was ‘not as bad’ obliterated a chantry.” He detected the magic in the other, and given his origin, his caution is at it’s peak. ‘Not as bad’ was still bad.
Still, that is not his place to intervene should the Inquisition trust a mage. “Your status as a mage is unpleasant, but possibly irrelevant. Tell me-- Do you know who I am?” he asks, eyes narrowed. Danarius is long dead but there is still a bounty on the head of an excellent runaway slave.
Realization suddenly sets in and his face hardens; he’s used to this, but it still grates his nerves that others would judge him based solely on where he was born. “Just because I so happen to be from Tevinter doesn’t mean I’m as bad as all of the rest. If I was, I wouldn’t be with the Inquisition. The Inquisitor would make sure of it.”

The elf huffed, refusing to meet Anders’ gaze. “You could have told someone. For some reason I am the one that gets pestered should you be absent.” He would never admit to worry, not about a mage, and certainly not about Anders. Coughing slightly, Fenris shifted his weight about and folded his arms. “Perhaps...you should let others know that you’ve returned.”
"Where were you?!?"
“Why Fenris, were you worried about me?” Anders teased, grinning at the elf, “But I sure you already had some idea as to where I was.” He wasn’t keen on telling Fenris about his activities with the mage underground.
