This painting is available as a print in my Etsy shop. (Upper two panels) During the final days of the Fourth Sun, Nahui Atl, Titlacahuan gave a command to the one called Tata, and to his wife Nene. He said to them, “It is known, it is foretold, that on the day Nahui Atl the earth shall be destroyed.” When Tata and Nene began to weep, he told them further, “Put aside your cares, my smallest ones, my precious necklaces. Hollow out a great cypress log, and when it is Huey Tozoztli (April) and the skies come falling down, get inside.” And so, when the first drops of rain began to fall during the Veintena of Huey Tozoztli, Tata and Nene climbed inside the hollowed log. Then Titlacahuan sealed them in and said, “You must eat only one of these kernels of corn. Also your wife must eat one only.” (Bottom panel) And when they had eaten them up they went aground. From inside they could hear the water drying. The log had stopped moving. They opened it and stood once more upon the surface of the earth, and beheld in sorrow the destruction of all they had ever known. From the heavens fell, from the heavens descended fire-drilling sticks, into the hands of Tata. Near them a fish swam in a pond. In wonderment they caught the fish, little knowing it had once been a man like them, transformed into a fish during the great flood. They killed the fish, and drilled a fire to cook it, in the year One Rabbit. Citlalinicue and Citlaltonac, looking down from Tamoanchan, exclaimed, “Teteo! Who has set the fire! Who is smoking up the skies!” Then Titlacahuan Tezcatlipoca came down and scolded them. He said “What are you doing, Tata? What are you doing, Nene?” Then he cut off their heads and put them on their rumps, and they were turned into dogs, and in the year One Rabbit, the heavens were smoked. The text is a modified version of the story as told in the Codex Chimalpopoca.
