It was Noir’s long-awaited break for Christmas. Well, it was a break for some of the members. SM recently informed Bomi and Eunbin that they would be doing a photoshoot for W Korea one day during their time off. That day was today.
“I can’t believe Chanmi gets to do nothing today,” Bomi groaned. “Why did it have to be just us doing the photoshoot?” She looked at Eunbin with a pained expression.
“Don’t ask me,” replied Eunbin. “…Aren’t you going to pick that up?”
Bomi lazily turned her head to look over at her phone, which was ringing. She grabbed it and pressed the green button.
“What?”
“Is everyone there?”
“Chunhei just went home for Christmas, but Eunbin is sitting next to me and Chanmi is in the kitchen.”
“Can you get Chanmi and put me on speaker?”
Bomi sighed, then yelled. “CHANMI, GET IN HERE! HAECHAN IS ON THE PHONE!”
“Did you have to yell right into my ear?” Eunbin asked, frowning.
“Yes.”
Chanmi suddenly appeared from around the corner holding a glass of orange juice. “I have arrived.”
Bomi put the call on speaker and placed her phone on the coffee table. “You’re on speaker.”
“Are you guys busy today? I was hoping you could come to our fan meeting.”
“Bomi and I are doing a photoshoot,” answered Eunbin. “On our day off.”
“What?!” Haechan yelled. “My plans are ruined!”
“What plans did you have?” Chanmi asked.
Haechan sighed. “I wanted us all to hang out because we never see each other anymore.”
Bomi smirked as she suddenly had an idea. “Chanmi isn’t doing anything today. She could go without us.”
Chanmi’s eyes widened while she took a sip of her orange juice. “What if I don’t want to sit by myself for multiple hours?”
Suddenly, another voice could be heard from the phone.
“Please come, Chanmi!” Jaemin begged.
“It’s been so long,” Chenle whined. “I might forget your face unless I see you soon.”
“Hi guys!” Eunbin interjected.
A chorus of hellos soon follwed. Eunbin smiled at Chanmi, who was leaning against the wall.
“Chanmi,” Bomi smirked. “It sounds like they all really want to see you. You don’t want to disappoint them, do you?”
Chanmi stared blankly at Bomi, saying nothing. She was a firm believer in staying quiet if you had nothing nice to say.
“Maybe we could all go to dinner together after,” suggested Eunbin. “Tteokbokki?”
“Eunbin,” Haechan chimed in, “You’re a genius.”
Chanmi wanted to protest, but she felt a little guilty for turning their offer down just because she was feeling lazy; she also could never say no to tteokbokki.
“Alright, I’ll come.”
The Dreamies celebrated on the other end of the call; Chanmi figured their reaction had nothing to do with seeing her and everything to do with the fact that they just won an argument against her.
Bomi quickly ended the conversation and hung up the phone.
“Well, would you look at the time!” Bomi commented, standing up from the sofa and looking at her empty wrist. “Eunbin, we better go!”
Eunbin watched Chanmi’s eyes follow Bomi across the room as she walked toward the front door. “I’m sure you’ll have lots of fun,” she said, trying to be positive.
“You’re probably right,” Chanmi admitted, straightening up and finishing her orange juice. “Well, you go kill it at the photoshoot - I’m gonna go get ready for the concert.”
Eunbin got up to follow Bomi. “See you later!”
Chanmi watched the two of them leave as she put her empty glass in the sink and noticed that Eunbin briefly rentered the doorway to grab a bag of goldfish she left by her shoes.
Really, Chanmi thought to herself, shaking her head while rinsing her glass. I can’t believe these people.
Chanmi went to her room and immediately groaned out loud upon seeing the mess on Chunhei’s side.
“Is that girl ever going to clean up her space?” She complained, kicking over a pair of pants that had crossed the imaginary line separating the two girls’ sides. “Seriously, when will I get some respect around this place…”
Chanmi fought her urge to put all of Chunhei’s things in the trash and decided to get ready to go see her friends.
Chanmi wore her usual high-waisted jeans, Vans, sweater, and puffer coat that she nearly left at the dorm. When she arrived at the venue, she was greeted by a staff member and was swiftly escorted backstage.
The Dreamies’ backstage area doubled as a dressing room and a lounge. On one side of the room, there was a TV, two sofas, and a table with snacks; on the other side of the room, there were multiple stations where stylists could work their magic and a couple clothing racks housing various outfits. Staff members were busy running around and doing various tasks, and the boys were no where to be seen.
They must be getting dressed or something, thought Chanmi. She decided to grab a snack and watch some TV while she waited. She collected some fruit and sat on the sofa. She noticed that the TV was playing “How to Hate You,” the drama that Jaemin starred in.
Is this on because the venue chose it or because Jaemin wanted to watch himself on TV? Chanmi laughed to herself as she ate a strawberry and watched her friend on the screen.
“Chanmi!” Exclaimed Haechan. “You made it!”
Chanmi looked across the room to see the members of NCT Dream filing in. She set her plate down and went to greet them. “Well, I couldn’t say no to the tteokbokki.”
“Ah, I missed you! Come give me a hug!” Jaemin demanded, heading toward her with his arms wide. Chanmi was soon trapped in the middle of a group hug, which she might have enjoyed if she wasn’t people-claustrophobic. And if she wasn’t being restrained for longer than 5 seconds.
“Okay,” she muttered, “I missed you guys too, but please let me go.”
“Ah, you’re no fun,” Jaemin pouted, letting go of Chanmi.
“Long time no see,” Jeno commented.
Chanmi smiled softly. “Yeah, a little too long.”
“Yah,” yelled Renjun, “You can’t eat with your outfits on!”
Chanmi followed Rejun’s gaze to the snack table. Jisung and Chenle looked over at Renjun like toddlers caught coloring on a wall. “Please?”
“Your stylists will get mad at you if you mess up your makeup or get crumbs on your clothes,” Renjun explained. One of the stylists overheard and made her agreement known. The two boys put their plates back, defeated.
Chanmi looked back at the group still surrounding her. “So what have you guys been up to lately? Besides preparing for the concert, I mean.”
Jaemin gave Chanmi a smug look. “Just thinking about when I’d finally get to see you again.”
Jeno and Renjun both punched Jaemin in the arm. “Seriously, this guy never stops,” Jeno sighed.
“Seriously,” Jaemin countered, folding his arms across his chest. “You didn’t both have to hit me!”
“I don’t know,” Chanmi grinned. “You kinda deserved it.”
Haechan grabbed Chanmi’s shoulder and gave her a serious look. “See, Chanmi? This is why we need to hang out more often. Violence is not only tolerated in NCT Dream, but it is also encouraged. You’d fit right in here!”
“For once, I agree with Haechan,” Renjun stated.
Chanmi raised her eyebrows. “That sounds terrifying.”
“You get used to it,” Chenle yelled from across the room.
A few moments later, a staff member approached Chanmi and the Dreamies. “Fifteen minutes to showtime! Ms. Chanmi, may these men show you to your seat?” The staff member gestured toward a small group of bodyguards.
“That sounds great!” She nodded to the bodyguards and waved to the boys. “I’ll see you all after the show.”
“Have fun!” Said Haechan. “Say hi to the rest of 127 for me!”
“I will! …Wait, what?” Chanmi stood there, brow furrowed, watching the boys wave to her as they left for the stage.
“Right this way, ma’am,” the bodyguards pointed toward a door and ushered Chanmi out of the room before she had a chance to figure out what Haechan had just said.
Chanmi was guided to a small area next to the stage. It was lower than the stage and slightly behind the stadium seating; Chanmi doubted any potential fans would be able to identify her as Noir’s Chanmi even if they saw her.
Chanmi thanked the bodyguards as she removed her jacket and sat in one of the chairs facing the stage. She could see thousands of green dots moving around like fireflies at night. There were scattered screams from excited NCTzens eager to see the Dreamies, and some were practicing their fan chants for different songs. Chanmi always liked NCT’s music, and being at this event made her feel like she, too, was an NCTzen in the sea of green.
I wonder when Noir will be able to have an event as big as this, thought Chanmi.
Soon, the lights dimmed and music began to play. NCTzens went wild as NCT Dream emerged from below the stage. Chanmi smiled and clapped softly; she was proud of her friends and how talented they were, but she felt a bit strange seeing them perform at an event like this. It was easy to forget that they were idols until they were all on stage being idols.
Chanmi was busy watching the concert when she noticed movement in the corner of her eye. She looked over and saw a bodyguard escorting a very familiar face to where she was seated. Chanmi suddenly remembered what Haechan had said to her before he left when the man took off his coat and sat in the seat next to her.
“Hey,” he said, reaching out his hand. “I’m Johnny.”
“Hi,” Chanmi shook his hand hesitantly. “I didn’t know anyone else was gonna be here.”
“Well actually, the rest of NCT 127 was supposed to come, but I was the only one who ended up getting ready in time.”
“You were still late,” Chanmi noted.
Johnny frowned. “And you didn’t even introduce yourself.”
Chanmi blushed. “Oh yeah, sorry. Lee Chanmi.”
Johnny smiled. “I know who you are, I was just messing with you. Also the whole dorm might’ve forgotten about the concert and I might’ve only remembered to come because Haechan texted me an hour ago.”
“Yikes,” Chanmi laughed.
There was a moment of silence between them, and Johnny spoke just before the pause would’ve become awkwardly long. “So what’s your zodiac sign?”
Chanmi tilted her head to the side. “My zodiac sign…? Uh, it’s Virgo.”
“Ah,” Johnny leaned back in his chair. “Interesting.”
“Well, what’s your sign?” Chanmi inquired, resting her arm on the back of her chair.
“I’m an Aquarius.”
Chanmi stared at Johnny, confused. “Why are you asking me about my sign? I don’t even know what they mean.”
“I just like to start my interviews that way,” he shrugged.
“You’re interviewing me?”
Johnny grinned. “They say Virgos are naturally curious people. I think they might be right.”
Chanmi pursed her lips, realizing just how many questions she had asked Johnny in succession and how many more questions she still had floating in her head. “What do they say about Aquariuses?”
“Aquariuses are innovative and eccentric. They’re also admired by a lot of people.”
“I’m pretty sure you made that last part up,” Chanmi suggested.
Johnny looked shocked. “I did not! Look it up, I dare you.”
“Uh-huh,” Chanmi grinned.
“Next question! What hobbies do you have?”
Johnny’s interview continued until it eventually morphed into a normal conversation. They would pause from time to time to watch the concert and sing along, but would soon go back to chatting.
“You’re kidding!” Johnny exclaimed.
“No really, I don’t drink coffee! My body doesn’t process caffeine well,” Chanmi explained.
“That is tragic,” he replied. “You should at least try decaf. You’re really missing out.”
“Okay, I will,” Chanmi laughed. “I promise.”
Chanmi glanced up at the stage and had to do a double take - the Dreamies were waving goodbye to the audience.
“No way,” she gasped. “Is the concert already over?”
“Oh wow, I guess it is,” Johnny agreed.
Chanmi looked back at Johnny. “Well that was the fastest two hours of my life.”
“Mine too. I gotta remember to call you the next time I’m waiting on my food to get delivered.”
Chanmi grinned. “They’d probably show up instantly.”
“Exactly my point!” Johnny laughed.
The group of bodyguards approached the two of them and told them it was time to go back to the Dreamies’ dressing room. Johnny and Chanmi followed them amidst the darkness; Chanmi noted that they were conveniently absent from the arena before the lights came back on.
When they arrived at their destination, the Dreamies were already in the room getting ready to leave. Chanmi accidentally examined the area more than she should’ve and had to avert her eyes from a few half-dressed boys changing into normal clothes. Johnny went over to talk to everyone while Chanmi parked herself on the sofa. She decided to check her phone now that she had cell service again. About 30 minutes ago, she had received a text from Eunbin saying that their photoshoot was over for the day and that she and Bomi would be ready for dinner soon. Chanmi was about to reply when Haechan walked over with Johnny and the rest of the group.
“Chanmi, can you believe this?” He shouted. “Everyone forgot our concert was today. When will people start to respect me around here?”
The rest of the boys laughed, but Chanmi just sighed, suddenly reminded of her roommate. “I know the feeling.”
“I don’t know about you guys,” Johnny proclaimed, “but I’m starving.”
“We’re actually all going to dinner together if you want to come,” suggested Chenle.
“Sounds perfect,” Johnny replied. “I can give you a ride if you want, Chanmi.”
“That would be great, but we’d have to go pick up Eunbin and Bomi, too. They don’t have a ride.”
“Not a problem,” he responded. “The more the merrier!”
Chanmi and Johnny left before the Dreamies so Johnny could pick up Eunbin and Bomi and still hopefully arrive at the same time as the others. When they first sat in Johnny’s car, neither of them said much. Johnny focused on driving, and Chanmi admired the snowy city streets while listening to the radio and giving Johnny directions. She had been with Johnny for hours now, but this was the first time they were truly alone together. Before, there were bodyguards and thousands of fans; now, it was just Johnny Suh and Lee Chanmi, and the latter was beginning to feel a bit awkward.
Chanmi’s puffy coat was inhibiting the range of motion of her arms, but with effort, she moved her marshmallow arm up to change the radio station. When an all too familiar song came on, she quickly changed the station again.
“Hey, change it back!” Johnny exclaimed. “I like that song.”
“I was hoping you didn’t hear it,” Chanmi said as she forced herself to press the button.
Johnny began to sing along with Noir’s title track “Femme Fatale,” and Chanmi’s face lit up. “You know our song?”
“Of course I do! I wasn’t kidding when I said I was a fan.”
Chanmi smiled brightly. It usually stressed her out to listen to her music in front of other people, but she didn’t feel that way at all with Johnny. She looked back down at her phone to see where they were going next. “Turn right at the light up ahead.”
Johnny obeyed his co-pilot’s directions, and they arrived at their destination in no time. Chanmi texted her members that they were here, and Bomi and Eunbin hopped into the backseats.
“Thanks for driving us,” Bomi immediately said to Johnny.
“It’s no problem. I’m Johnny, by the way.”
Bomi laughed. “Dude, we know.”
Johnny chuckled to himself and started on the route to the restaurant. Chanmi and Bomi chatted while Eunbin sat quietly on her phone.
“So, how was your photoshoot?” Chanmi asked. “I see they let you keep some of the clothes.”
“Yes ma’am,” Bomi confirmed, admiring her new shirt. “It was actually a lot of fun. Wasn’t it, Eunbin?” Bomi nudged Eunbin with her elbow.
“Hm?” Eunbin looked up. “Oh, yeah, it was fun.”
Bomi rolled her eyes. “So how was the fan meeting?” Bomi looked back and forth between Chanmi and Johnny like she was trying to get Chanmi to explain something.
“It was fun! I even made a friend while I was there.”
“Aww,” Bomi teased, “I’m so proud of you!”
Chanmi glanced over at Johnny, who she noticed was trying not to laugh. She sighed, “I don’t deserve this slander.”
Bomi laughed. “No really, we’re proud of you, aren’t we, Eunbin?”
Eunbin looked up from her phone. “Sorry, what?”
Bomi groaned, finally reaching her breaking point. “Eunbin, you’ve been on your phone ever since we left the shoot. Can you please put it down and live in the moment?”
“Sorry, one of my friends has been texting me.” Eunbin put her phone in her purse and folded her hand in her lap.
“Who?” Bomi squinted.
Eunbin looked toward Chanmi as if seeking assistance. “Don’t look at me,” Chanmi said, looking down at her phone’s GPS. “Johnny, take the next left.”
“Got it.”
Eunbin sighed. “Baekhyun.”
Johnny looked at Chanmi confusedly. She continued to stare at her phone, unsure of what to do with herself.
“Did you just say Baekhyun?” Bomi questioned. “Are you guys friends now or something?”
“I meant to tell you guys, but it just never came up.”
“Uh huh, sure,” Bomi said, lifting a single eyebrow.
“Keep going straight for a bit and the restaurant should be on the right eventually,” Chanmi stated, hoping to distract Johnny from the drama that was Noir.
Johnny nodded as the girls continued to debate each other in the back seat. Chanmi looked out the window for a while and spotted the restaurant a few minutes later.
“Oh look, we finally made it,” Chanmi blurted, turning to face the backseat while Johnny pulled into the lot. “Why don’t you two get out and I’ll stay here while Johnny parks the car?”
“Okay, mom,” Bomi teased.
Johnny drove up to the the entrance of the restaurant and let the girls out to join the Dreamies at their table. Johnny spoke as soon as the car door shut. “Okay, now I’m really curious. How in the world do Eunbin and Baekhyun know each other?”
Chanmi sighed. “All of that is a long story, and now I’m not sure I know all the details to it.”
Johnny parked the car, putting his chin in his hand and leaning on the armrest. “I’m all ears.”
Chanmi’s phone dinged before she could respond. She received a text from Renjun that read: “How long does it take to park a car??”
Chanmi snickered. “I’ll have to tell it another time. I think everyone’s starving.”
“Boo!”
Chanmi laughed as Johnny expressed his disappointment and the two of them exited his car. The pair raced to the door in an attempt to beat the cold. Chanmi’s shoes squished in slush and water puddles, and she had to be careful not to get her feet wet.
Johnny, having much longer legs, made it to the door first and opened it for Chanmi. “After you,” he motioned for her to enter with his arm.
“Thanks,” she huffed, rubbing her shoes on the mat to dry them. Chanmi was hit with a wave of appreciation for all food upon entering the modern-looking restaurant and smelling the wonderful aromas; she was much hungrier than she had realized.
The place was packed with people despite how late in the day it was. Chanmi looked around, but she couldn’t find her friends - probably because a lot of the people waiting to be seated were taller than her and blocked her line of sight.
“I see them!” Johnny claimed.
“Where?” Chanmi craned her neck but still struggled to spot Eunbin’s bright pink hair.
“Come on,” Johnny grabbed Chanmi’s hand and led her through the small crowd. Usually, Chanmi didn’t like people touching her, but she didn’t seem to mind in that moment. Before she had time to question why she felt that way, they made it to the table and Johnny immediately let go.
“Thank God,” Renjun announced upon seeing his friends.
“We saved you seats,” Jaemin said, pointing at two empty chairs between him and Haechan. Chanmi sat next to Jaemin, and Johnny sat next to his roommate. Chanmi noticed that Bomi was quite literally in the middle of an enthusiastic conversation with Haechan and Jisung, and Eunbin was looking at whatever Chenle was showing her on his phone. Jeno and Renjun were focused on the menu.
“The waiter is coming!” Haechan announced.
Just then, a teddy bear-looking grandpa approached the table of ten to take their orders. Johnny and Chanmi ordered last so that they could at least have a few seconds to glance over the menu.
“Alright, I’l get those orders put in for you guys right away,” said the waiter.
Johnny piped up just as the waiter turned to leave. “Excuse me, would you mind taking a picture of us?”
“Of course!” The waiter agreed, and Johnny handed over his phone.
“What if I’m not ready for a photo?” Jisung pouted.
Chenle rolled his eyes. “Get over yourself.”
The table of friends listened to the waiter’s slightly confusing instructions so that they could all be seen in the photo. They posed like the idols that they all somehow were, and the waiter took the photo and handed Johnny back his phone.
“What do you think?” Johnny asked, showing Chanmi the photo.
Chanmi couldn’t help but smile at seeing her friends all together again. “It looks great!”
Johnny turned to the waiter. “Thank you!”
“You are very welcome!” the man replied, finally leaving the area.
After constant begging from everyone to see the photo, Johnny AirDropped it to everyone present.
“Ew, I look horrible in that,” Bomi claimed.
“You do not!” Eunbin insisted. “You look amazing!”
Chanmi laughed as she listened to her friends debate whether or not Bomi needed glasses.
Their food was brought out much quicker than Chanmi had anticipated considering how many of them there were. She smiled when the waiter set down a plate of perfectly seasoned tteokbokki in front of her.
“My life is complete,” she muttered.
“They say the way to a Virgo’s heart is through food,” Johnny joked.
Chanmi tried not to laugh as she picked up a piece of tteokbokki in her chopsticks. “I bet it’ll say that if I look it up, right?”
“Oh, yeah,” Johnny persuaded. “Definitely.”

The afternoon sun broke through the clouds in Seoul city just enough to begin melting the layer of snow coating the streetlights and sidewalks, warming the cheeks of passersby. Slush splashed under tires as cars drove by every few seconds; pedestrians crowded the sidewalks and gathered near crosswalks. The city was in constant motion; a stark contrast to Eunbin, who was standing outside of her apartment building, frozen in place. Her head darted from car to car, then to her phone, then back to the street once again. She was waiting for an “I’m here!” text from Baekhyun, who was her wedding date. Well, it wasn’t a date - Baekhyun was just bringing her to the wedding. As his friend.
I technically am his date to this, aren’t I… Eunbin thought to herself. But we aren’t going on a date. Friends do this kind of thing all the time.
She looked down at her phone again - no new messages.
“Ugh, where is he?” Eunbin groaned out loud. The tips of her ears and nose were starting to sting from the cold. She shoved her hands into her coat pockets, wishing she’d worn a sweater and jeans instead of a dress and heels (even though that wouldn’t have been socially acceptable at a black tie event).
Just then, Eunbin felt a tap on her shoulder, and she turned around to find the man she’d been searching for suddenly standing in front of her as if she’d summoned him by complaining. Baekhyun had a bright smile on his face, giving him a cute look that starkly contrasted his outfit of the day - a black suit with a white collared shirt and a black wool overcoat.
“You rang?”
“Finally,” Eunbin said, letting out a sigh. “Where’s your car? I’m freezing.”
“You know,” Baekhyun started, taking Eunbin’s arm in his. “When I said to wait for me to come get you, I didn’t mean outside.”
Eunbin looked away as they began to walk together. “Yeah, well… I didn’t want to be inside anymore.”
“Wanna talk about it?” Baekhyun asked, his head tilting to the side like a puppy.
“Not really, no.”
Baekhyun frowned. “Well, whatever it is, I think you should forget about it. And you should smile; it would compliment your dress.”
Eunbin looked up at Baekhyun with a furrowed brow. “I’m wearing a coat. You haven’t even seen my dress.”
Baekhyun’s eyes widened. “Are you questioning my fashion sense?”
Eunbin smiled involuntarily and removed her arm from Baekhyun’s so she could whack him with it. He laughed and grabbed his arm where Eunbin hit him.
“It’s been less than 5 minutes and you’re already getting violent? Tonight should be interesting.”
Eunbin shook her platinum blonde bob as the duo finally reached Baekhyun’s car. Baekhyun opened the door for Eunbin and gestured for her to get in the passenger seat. She climbed in, making sure to straighten her coat under her before she fully sat down. Baekhyun sat in the driver’s seat and turned on the car.
“You pick what we listen to,” he stated, pulling out his phone to give Eunbin the aux. Eunbin took the phone and started looking through Baekhyun’s playlists, shuffling one that looked like mostly R&B.
“Ooh, this is the perfect weather for that kind of music,” Baekhyun grinned. “Cold, but not freezing.”
Eunbin gave Baekhyun a confused look. “I didn’t know music was better or worse depending on the weather.”
“It’s true! Pop music is better in the summer, too,” Baekhyun explained, flipping his turn signal at the stoplight.
Eunbin rolled her eyes and looked out the window at the skyscrapers and streetlights, unintentionally catching a glimpse of her own reflection. She noticed the makeup on her face and the fancy earrings decorating her ears and all of a sudden it hit her that she was doing the exact opposite of what Chanmi said she should do earlier that day - “be careful”. She was upset when Chanmi tried to talk to her about being public with her friendship with Baekhyun, but Eunbin realized at that moment that Chanmi might’ve had a good point. All of a sudden, Eunbin felt regret for the way she acted earlier that day and was nervous about going to the wedding.
“You’re being quiet,” Baekhyun commented.
Eunbin looked over at Baekhyun then down at her hands. “I was just thinking.”
“What about?”
“Well,” she hesitated. “I was thinking about being out in public, where anyone could take pictures of us, anyone could post something online…”
“Oh, don’t worry about that,” Baekhyun declared. “Donghyun knows we’re coming and is asking everyone not to take pictures to respect our privacy. The only person that can take pictures during the whole wedding is the photographer.”
“Do you think people will listen, though?”
“If I didn’t, I probably wouldn’t be going.”
Eunbin nodded and breathed a sigh of relief. “Thank goodness.”
The rest of the car ride was business as usual: Baekhyun cracking jokes, Eunbin telling Baekhyun to stop making her laugh or else she’d mess up her makeup, and the both of them singing along with every other song that played.
After a while, they arrived at the venue. From the outside, it was an unassuming boxy little brick building in the most random part of town; but upon closer look, Eunbin could see chandeliers through the windows and guests inside dressed to the nines. The interior of the building made Eunbin even more confused when she compared it to the exterior. The ceilings were decorated with complicated wooden structures that created an illusion of a vaulted ceiling, arched windows lined the walls, and flowers capped each seat nearest to the aisle, which lead to a beautiful arch at the altar made of a variety of flowers. As she and Baekhyun located seats reserved for them in the back row, Eunbin found herself wondering what her own wedding would be like - if she would ever get to have one, that is.
Eunbin took off her long, black coat and hung it on the back of her chair, revealing a floor-length dark green wrap dress that plunged a bit in the front and revealed part of her leg through a ruffled slit. She noticed that Baekhyun was watching her as she sat down next to him.
“What?” She asked.
Baekhyun smirked. “I was right. A smile would look good with your dress.”
Eunbin grinned and shook her head. “You’re impossible.”
A few minutes later, the wedding ceremony began. The bride was glowing, as all brides do, and Baekhyun’s friend looked ecstatic. Eunbin watched everything unfold, half paying attention and half planning her future wedding in her head. She decided to actually pay attention for the vows; she wanted to get some ideas for her own in the future. The groom went first, and then it was the bride’s turn.
“Donghyun,” she started. “When we first met, I couldn’t stand you. Obviously, I changed my mind.”
The crowd laughed, and Baekhyun nudged Eunbin’s arm. “That kinda sounds like you and me.”
“Yeah, it does,” Eunbin responded instinctively. She continued to listen to the bride speak for a few moments before realizing what she just said.
Wait a minute, she thought, why does a soon-to-be-married couple sound like me and Baekhyun?
Eunbin looked at the man in question, squinting as if she could find answers in his face.
Do I have feelings for Baekhyun? There’s no way…
Baekhyun stayed facing forward but moved his eyes to the side to meet Eunbin’s.
“You’re staring at me,” he pouted.
Eunbin hardened her gaze and scrunched her nose. “I know…”
Baekhyun’s eyes widened as he dramatically moved his focus back to the altar. “Weirdo.”
“You too,” Eunbin scoffed, turning to look at the bride. She tried to listen to the rest of the ceremony, but the thoughts in her head and the butterflies in her stomach overruled her. As the groom kissed the bride, Eunbin found her eyes drawn back to Baekhyun. She watched as he smiled radiantly for the newly married couple, clapping softly with the rest of the crowd. A smile crept its way onto Eunbin’s face before she even knew what was going on.
Oh, thought Eunbin. I am so screwed.
No time was wasted getting the reception started in the neighboring room. Eunbin noted that the chandeliers she could see from outside the building were actually from this side room and not from the main hall. Though she didn’t know what the space was supposed to be called, Eunbin liked to think of it as a ballroom - it was the closest thing to a real one she’d ever seen. Wood floors coated the area and were dotted with circular tables for guests to sit at. Right in the center of the room was a large open area accompanied by an inconspicuous DJ booth - possibly a dangerous place to be if one had consumed two or more drinks. Eunbin and Baekhyun had a private table reserved for them near enough to the bride and groom that they could almost speak to each other from their seats. Eunbin placed her coat on the back of yet another chair as Baekhyun struck up conversation with the groom. She wasn’t paying too much attention as she was still distracted by everything going on in her head.
“Eunbin! It sure is good to see you after all this time! Aren’t you gonna come say hi?”
She turned toward the groom, Donghyun, the surprise of his voice slightly startling her. “Of course! It’s been a long time.”
“It sure has. It’s too bad your brother is in the army, I would’ve loved to have him here today.”
Eunbin smiled softly. “I’m sure he would’ve enjoyed being here, too.”
Donghyun turned his attention to Baekhyun. “You know, it’s great to see you guys together after you used to fight as kids. It’s almost like fate, considering Baek-”
“It was great to catch up, Donghyun!” Baekhyun interjected, quickly cutting off his old friend’s sentence. “I don’t want to keep you two from talking to everyone else. It was really great to see you!” He put his hand on Eunbin’s back to guide her away from the conversation and toward their table. “I’m gonna go get drinks, you want anything?”
Eunbin sat cautiously in the chair Baekhyun pulled out for her. “Uh, sure, I’ll have a soju or something.”
Baekhyun gave her a thumbs up and darted in the direction of the bar.
What on earth was that about? Eunbin pondered, looking over at Baekhyun and her brother’s old friend. Soon, Baekhyun was back with drinks for the two of them.
“They only had champagne,” he said, placing two skinny glasses on the table.
“That’s okay,” Eunbin said, taking a flute in her hand and considering downing the thing in one go. She swirled the alcohol around in the glass and watched it go in circles, wondering whether or not she should ask Baekhyun about what just happened. She opted for a simple sip of champagne and decided that she had enough problems of her own to worry about - she didn’t need to add whatever that was to the mix.
A moment later, it was announced that the bride and groom would do their first dance together, and afterward, the dance floor would be open to everyone. Eunbin and Baekhyun sat at their table, each drinking their glasses of champagne while watching the newlyweds dance. Baekhyun broke the silence between them near the end of the dance.
“Hey,” he tapped Eunbin’s forearm. “When this is over, do you wanna go dance?”
Eunbin thought for a second, then replied. “Okay.”
Baekhyun leaned back in his chair. “Wait, really?”
“Yeah,” Eunbin shrugged, looking at her near-empty glass of champagne. “Blame it on the alcohol I guess.” She smiled up at Baekhyun, knowing full well that that little glass of champagne wasn’t affecting her decision making abilities at all.
As soon as the first dance was over, there was a brief pause for a change of music.
“Let’s go up right now to get a good spot,” Baekhyun suggested, standing up from his chair and reaching out his hand to Eunbin.
“Okay,” Eunbin giggled as she took Baekhyun’s hand and the two of them ran onto the dance floor.
Eunbin looked around and noticed something was off. “Baekhyun, I don’t think we thought this through. There’s no one else here.”
“Someone has to get the party started,” he said. “Might as well be us.”
Just then, the emcee came back to make an announcement: it was time for the couple’s slow dance, and all couples, dating or married, were encouraged to make their way to the dance floor.
Eunbin and Baekhyun both looked at each other with wide eyes as the DJ started to play “Beautiful” by Crush.
“What do we do now? We’re not dating or married!” Eunbin asked in a panic.
Baekhyun looked around as couples of all ages began to surround them. “We can’t leave now; we were the first ones here!” He looked at Eunbin and took a step forward, gently placing one hand behind her back and placing his other hand in hers.
“What are you doing??” Eunbin exclaimed, her face uncomfortably close to Baekhyun’s.
“We’re blending in,” Baekhyun smirked. He tightened his grip around her waist, pulling her close enough for their bodies to ever so slightly touch. “Don’t worry about it.”
Don’t worry about it?? Eunbin thought to herself. How am I supposed to stay calm like this?!
Eunbin turned her head away from Baekhyun’s in an effort to lower her heart rate. She looked around at all the other couples as she and Baekhyun danced.
Everyone else is either looking at their partner or practically hugging them, Eunbin noticed. If we’re really just trying to blend in…
Against her better judgement, Eunbin decided to meet Baekhyun’s gaze directly. The song reached its first chorus as Eunbin looked right into Baekhyun’s eyes, surprising the both of them. They swayed to the tempo and stared at each other, each taking in the details of the other’s face, not speaking a word. Eunbin found herself getting more comfortable in Baekhyun’s arms as time went on. She also discovered that her eyes kept making their way to his lips. She suddenly decided to ask a question that had been bothering her all day.
“Baekhyun, are we friends?”
His eyes moved up to meet hers. “What do you mean?”
“I mean…” Eunbin paused. “Are we friends?”
Baekhyun laughed confusedly. “I wouldn’t have wanted to bring you here with me if we weren’t friends.”
Something inside of Eunbin broke upon hearing that, and she hated that she felt that way. “Oh… I guess that’s true, yeah…”
Baekhyun studied Eunbin’s face as she turned her head away. Either at the perfect or worst time imaginable, the song came to an end, and the DJ awkwardly shifted the energy to “Fantastic Baby” by BIGBANG. Eunbin abruptly stepped away from Baekhyun as wedding guests started to fill in the gaps on the dance floor.
“I’m gonna go to the bathroom,” she said, still stepping backward. “I’ll be right back.”
Eunbin navigated her way through the newly forming crowd, grabbing her purse and coat from the table before making her way toward the door. She scrambled to get her coat on as she went outside. After pushing her back against the door, she was greeted by a gust of wind and some scattered flurries to the face. It was dark out by this time in the winter, but the snow seemed to make the scene a bit brighter than normal. Eunbin looked up at the streetlights lining the parking lot and noticed that the snow appeared to be getting heavier. She took a few steps away from the door so as to get out of anyone’s way and reached in her purse for her phone, dialing a number soon after.
“Hello?”
“Hey, are you busy right now?”
The voice on the other end hesitated. “Aren’t you busy right now?”
“Bomi, please,” Eunbin sighed. “Can you come get me?”
“Me and Chunhei just left for the studio to work on one of our new choreographies, but I think Chanmi went to pick up dinner. She can probably come get you.”
Eunbin folded one of her arms around her waist. “Okay, I’ll call her.”
“Alright, bye.”
“Bye.” Eunbin hung up the phone. “Well, shit.”
She stared down at the contact in her phone that read “Lee Chanmi” and debated whether or not to call and whether or not there would be an answer. She still hadn’t apologized for earlier that day, and she thought it might be extremely awkward to suddenly call.
Well, I can’t stay here, Eunbin thought, deciding to suck it up and call her unnie. It rung for a moment, then there was an answer.
“Hey…?”
“What are you doing right now?” Eunbin skipped straight to the point.
“I was on my way to pick up some tteokbokki. Why, is everything okay?”
“Could you come pick me up?”
“Where are you?”
Eunbin’s stress levels started to decline as she told Chanmi the address.
“Oh, I’m already in the area! I can be there in like 5 minutes probably.”
“That sounds great,” Eunbin stated, hearing the door open and close behind her. “Thanks.”
“Anytime.”
Eunbin’s heart skipped a beat as she hung up and put her phone back in her purse, knowing who was waiting patiently behind her.
“I didn’t know girls went outside to pee,” Baekhyun joked, walking up to Eunbin’s side and stuffing his hands in his coat pockets. “What are you doing out here?”
“Sorry,” Eunbin explained, fiddling with her purse to avoid eye contact. “I just was getting claustrophobic and wanted to leave.”
“Who was on the phone?”
“That was Chanmi. She’s… coming to get me.”
Baekhyun frowned. “You know I have a car,” he pointed toward the parking lot. “It’s right over there. You were in it earlier.”
“Baekhyun, please stop asking me questions,” Eunbin pleaded, looking in the direction of the road she was hoping Chanmi would appear from any second.
“I will if you look at me,” he countered.
Eunbin continued to look away, so Baekhyun stepped right in front of where she was looking. She could see Baekhyun making funny faces at her in the corner of her eye, and somehow that made her feel even worse.
“Please stop,” Eunbin requested, finally making eye contact with Baekhyun. She was trying to stop tears from forming in her eyes, but seeing her own sadness reflect in Baekhyun’s face didn’t help at all.
Baekhyun just looked at her, not knowing what to say or do.
“Is this about what you said when we were dancing?”
Eunbin swiftly looked away from Baekhyun once more. “I don’t know… maybe… does it matter?”
“It matters to me,” Baekhyun said, reaching his hand underneath Eunbin’s chin. Eunbin stepped back before he could touch her face.
“Okay, yes, it’s about that,” she declared, folding her arms in front of her chest. “I just don’t know what to think anymore.” Eunbin began to pace as she continued on. “We say that we’re just friends, but then we go do things together that most people would call dates and we slow dance and you look at me and… I’m just confused.”
Baekhyun opened his mouth to say something, but Eunbin kept talking, her voice increasing in volume. “And this morning I got in a fight with Chanmi about this, and I told her ‘Oh, we’re just friends, you’re overreacting, I won’t cause a scandal,’ but you’re turning me into a liar!”
Just then, Eunbin’s phone rang and she answered immediately.
“Chanmi!”
“Hey, I’m here.”
Eunbin hastily searched the parking lot for Chanmi. “I see you.” She hung up and told Baekhyun she had to go, keeping her back turned away all the while.
Chanmi watched in confusion as Eunbin practically ran to her car; she noted the troubled expression on Baekhyun’s face.
Eunbin hopped in and slammed the door. “Thanks for coming to get me.”
Chanmi pretended not to see Eunbin silently wipe a tear from her cheek out of the corner of her eye.
“Anytime. By the way, I wanna apologize for earlier today.”
“I’m the one who should be apologizing,” Eunbin interjected, looking out the window and spotting Baekhyun’s shadowy figure in the side mirror. “You were right anyway.”

noir.
ch.3 : “bambi” prologue
abstract: this little prologue is pretty much a transition between my stuff from forever ago and “current day”. since i’ve been gone so long i wanted to recap the time since i wrote last. i’m honestly just excited about the next part though hehe
main characters: lee chanmi, zhong chunhei, kim bomi, hong eunbin
genre: is no genre an option? this is a prologue. tbh angst if anything.
word count: 728
warnings: NONE this is a sfw zone. at least for the time being😈
a/n: skz has nothing to do with this i just wanted to use the gif :)
Noir has seen much success in the year or so since they debuted. They released their first full-length album over the summer and are preparing to release an EP after the start of the new year. Though they haven’t been around long, they’ve already made a tradition of doing a Christmas-themed VLive at the start of December where they do various Christmassy things. Last year, for example, they had a gingerbread house contest that the managers judged (which Chunhei won by making the zombie apocalypse using green gummy bears). This year, the girls decided to decorate their tree together and do a Q&A with fans.
“Wow, it’s harder to read messages than I thought it would be. They move so fast!” Chanmi noted, watching messages from fans fly by on the screen.
The girls all sat on the sofa by their newly decorated Christmas tree as Chanmi began to search for questions they could easily answer.
“Ooh, here’s one: When are we gonna see Bomi on another variety show?”
“Oh my god,” Bomi pointed at the camera. “You guys just want to see Heechul embarrass me again!” Bomi made a face and folded her arms. “Not gonna happen.”
Chanmi and Eunbin giggled at Bomi’s dramatics. Chunhei prodded, “I thought you loved being on Knowing Bros with everyone...?”
Bomi frowned. “I mean… I did have a lot of fun with the other main dancers they had on there…”
“Heechul!” Chanmi chimed in, “If you’re watching, Noir would love to be on Knowing Bros!” Chanmi ignored Bomi’s half-hearted protests and moved on to the next question.
“Okay, this one is less of a question and more of a statement: WE WANT MORE EUNBIN SONG COVERS!!!”
“Ahh,” Eunbin smiled and held her cheeks in her hands. “I’ll do another one soon, I promise!”
“A Christmas present for our étoiles?” Suggested Chanmi.
“Isn’t that what you’re doing?” Eunbin replied.
Chanmi raised her eyebrows and looked into the camera suspiciously. “You never know!”
Chanmi continued to read off questions about the members, the group, and anything else the fans wondered about. Chunhei showed off some of her digital art, Bomi teased one of Noir’s upcoming choreographies, and Eunbin and Chanmi sang part of a song they’d been working on together.
“It looks like we’re out of time,” Chanmi noted, feeling a grumble in her stomach telling her that it was time for lunch. “I hope you guys enjoyed this VLive!” She pointed finger guns at the camera, “Same time next year?”
The members waved and said their goodbyes, and soon the live had ended.
“I think that went pretty well!” Said Bomi.
“Yeah,” Eunbin agreed. “It was fun.” She got up from her spot on the ground and started to walk away.
Bomi tilted her head to the side. “Where are you going so fast?”
“I have to go get ready for a wedding,” Eunbin said, still headed toward her room and hoping to escape further questioning.
“Who’s getting married?” Chunhei inquired.
Eunbin sighed, stopping in her tracks. She turned around and replied hesitantly, sensing that the conversation was about to go downhill quickly. “One of Baekhyun’s friends. I think I met him once.”
“You’re going to a wedding as Baekhyun’s date?” Chanmi asked with a tinge of disapproval. She stood up, taking a step toward Eunbin.
“It’s not a date,” Eunbin clarified, “We’re just going together.”
Chunhei and Bomi exchanged glances and stayed seated - it was safer to remain on the sofa. “Don’t you like each other though?” Chunhei suggested.
Eunbin rolled her eyes. “Baekhyun and I are just friends. Nothing more.”
“Look,” Chanmi added, “I just want you to be careful. This would be fine either way if we were normal people, but we’re not,” Chanmi stated, “We’re idols - and we only debuted last year. We can’t have a scandal on our hands this early in the game.”
“What are you saying?” Eunbin raised her voice. “Can I not be friends or do things with Baekhyun just because he’s a boy? You play video games with Haechan all the time! How is that not the same?”
“You know she didn’t mean it that way,” added Bomi.
“Really? That’s kinda what it sounded like.” Eunbin got up from the sofa and stormed toward her shared room with Bomi.
“Eunbin-” Chanmi exclaimed.
“I’m going to get ready for the wedding.” Eunbin closed the door behind her, leaving the other three members in the dust. Chanmi sighed, plopping herself down between Bomi and Chunhei. “This leader stuff is harder than it looks.”

“Would it be weird if I got Soo-man a Christmas present?” Chunhei asked, taking a strawberry from her fruit bowl.
Eunbin looked confusedly at the member who was sitting across the table from her. “Yes?”
Chunhei spoke as she chewed. “That’s too bad.”
Eunbin looked around the dorm for her other members who she hoped would save her from this conversation, but she saw no one.
“Where are Bomi and Chanmi?”
Chunhei tilted her head to the side. “Bomi is practicing her choreography for a cover and I believe Chanmi is in our room playing video games.”
Eunbin excused herself and walked right into Chanmi & Chunhei’s shared bedroom.
“Dang it Haechan, you were supposed to cover me!” Chanmi stared angrily at her monitor.
Eunbin laughed quietly. “Am I interrupting?”
Chanmi’s head darted in her direction. “Ah, no. Haechan just got me KILLED!” She yelled directly into her mic, and Eunbin could faintly hear Haechan’s protests through Chanmi’s headset as she took it off.
“What’s up?”
“Chunhei inspired me to get out of here… I might go shopping, do you want to come?”
“Hmm… I already did my Christmas shopping.” Chanmi pouted. “Can you go by yourself?”
Eunbin sighed dramatically. “I’ll go by myself.”
Chanmi smiled widely as Eunbin closed the door and made her way to the front door.
“Chunhei, I’m going out,” she said, grabbing her purse. Chunhei waved as Eunbin headed out the door.
Eunbin walked down the sidewalk, pushing her hands tightly into her coat pockets. Although it was the afternoon and the sun was at its brightest, it was cold outside, and Eunbin’s exposed cheeks and nose reddened after seconds of exposure to the elements. She wasn’t too fond of the freezing temperature, but she had to admit that Seoul was beautiful with the neon city lights glistening on the scattered piles of snow. After about five minutes of wishing she had taken the bus, Eunbin decided to go inside a random store to warm up. The store she chose happened to be a high-end men’s clothing store.
“Oops,” Eunbin whispered, trying to hide herself so she could warm up before she left the place. The store itself looked expensive. There were some shirts and sweaters hung on evenly spaced racks, and a variety of belts and other accessories were displayed in a glass case at the front of the store. The back wall was lined with mannequins in particularly well put together outfits. Eunbin deduced that the farther back you went in the store, the more expensive the items were.
Eunbin was looking out the window admiring the snowy Seoul streets when a familiar voice called her name.
“Baekhyun! Hi…” Eunbin’s already red cheeks somehow got redder when she confronted the brown eyes that were peeking at her under a hood.
“I didn’t know you shopped here!” Baekhyun joked.
“I just came in to warm up,” Eunbin explained. “I didn’t realize it was a men’s store…”
“You should probably watch where you’re going more,” Baekhyun suggested.
Eunbin made a face. “It was cold outside! What was I supposed to do, get frostbite?”
Baekhyun smirked. “You’re kinda cute when you’re angry.”
Eunbin’s eyes widened. “What did you just say?”
“Ah, nothing,” Baekhyun smiled and turned to walk away. “I’ll see you around.”
Eunbin stood with a blank expression on her face as she watched Baekhyun walk toward the back of the store. “Did Baekhyun just call me cute?” Eunbin placed her hands on her cheeks to cool them down. Figuring that Baekhyun was teasing her just like he did in the past, Eunbin decided to ignore it. “This is my chance to be the bigger person and apologize for being rude,” she thought.
Eunbin took a deep breath and walked over to Baekhyun, who was browsing through a rack of hoodies. She was standing directly behind him when she got cold feet. “What am I doing? He should be apologizing to ME,” Eunbin thought while staring at Baekhyun’s back. Before she could decide what she wanted to do, Baekhyun turned around, not realizing that Eunbin was there, let alone standing so close to him.
“Ah, kkaebsong…” Baekhyun muttered, bringing his hand to his heart. “Someone might think you’re stalking me if you keep following me around like that.”
Eunbin frowned. “I didn’t mean to - whatever. I just wanted to apologize for what I said at the MAMAs.”
“In the middle of a store?” Baekhyun raised an eyebrow.
“Please don’t, I’m trying to be the bigger person here,” Eunbin said exasperatedly. “I shouldn’t have said what I said, and I hope you can forgive me.”
Baekhyun’s expression shifted from playful to sincere. “Only if you forgive me first.”
Eunbin’s jaw just about dropped to the floor. “What do you mean?”
Baekhyun brought his hand up to his neck. “I was an ass to you when I was in high school. I’m the one who should be apologizing to you.”
Eunbin was speechless. Never in a million years did she think that Baekhyun would be mature enough to genuinely apologize. “I, uh…”
“Can you forgive me? Please?” Baekhyun asked nervously due to Eunbin’s hesitation.
“Yes, I forgive you.”
Baekhyun smiled softly. “Good. I forgive you too.”
Eunbin smiled back. “Now that that’s settled, I think I’m gonna go…”
Baekhyun pouted. “We just got to be friends and you’re leaving already? Can’t you at least help me pick out which sweatshirt is better?” Baekhyun grabbed two sweatshirts that he had been eyeing from the rack and looked at Eunbin with puppy dog eyes.
Eunbin playfully rolled her eyes. “I guess I have some time to spare.”
Baekhyun smiled. “Yay! So, which one do you like?” He held each one out individually and gave them a twirl.
“Hmm…” Eunbin squinted and pretended to think hard. “I like the one on the right better.”
Baekhyun looked unimpressed. “That one’s more expensive! Are you trying to make me go broke?”
“What can I say,” stated Eunbin. “I have expensive taste.”
Baekhyun looked at the two hoodies and put the one in his left hand back on the rack. “Me too.”

ch.1: kkaebsong! pt. 2
prompt: SM Entertainment just debuted a new girl group, Noir, but with EXO’s busy schedule, Baekhyun didn’t even know they existed. One day, he runs into them at SM and immediately recognizes one of the members - Hong Eunbin, his high school crush! But Baekhyun was a bit of a pest back then, and she didn’t like him because of it. Now, Baekhyun wants to make a good impression.
pov(s): hong eunbin, lee chanmi
word count: 1.4k
warnings: none! rated e for everyone
a/n: we are pretending exo doesn’t get completely ignored by mnet
It was madness. The stylists were frantically running from place to place, making sure each member of Noir looked like a femme fatale, which was fitting for the situation. The members were about to perform their title song, “Femme Fatale,” at the MAMAs. They were beyond nervous. They had debuted only three weeks ago, and they already had the honor of performing on such a distinguished stage. They were even nominated for Best New Female Group. The pressure was on!
Chanmi shuffled a playlist on her phone to help ease their nerves. “Okay guys, this is it. We’ve worked so hard, and I think it’s all about to pay off. We got this.”
Eunbin nodded in agreement from across the room. She had finished getting ready first and was waiting on the others.
Chanmi joined Eunbin in watching the other two get their makeup done. They stood in silence, listening to “Seesaw” by BTS. Suddenly, Eunbin had a thought.
“By the time this song is over, we’ll be headed to the stage.”
“Yeah,” Chanmi replied. “It’s surreal.”
After what felt like 2 seconds, the song ended and the group was told to follow a man dressed in black. They followed him closely and walked down dark, narrow corridors under the stage until they made it to their platform. They could hear the sounds of fans cheering and the rumble of the bass that was playing in their intro. Bomi yelled so that the members could hear her. “HWAITING!!” Chanmi lead their pre-stage handshake, and before they knew it, the platform they stood on began to rise. The crowd surrounding the idols who were seated near the stage went wild when Noir emerged from beneath the stage. They had killer vocals and dance skills; they really were femme fatales.
While singing her solo, Eunbin glanced toward the section with the idols. Of all people, why did she have to make eye contact with Baekhyun? Luckily, she was more focused than ever, or else she might’ve faltered on her high note. Baekhyun was singing every word of the song; it seemed like he did his homework since they last met.
Eunbin and the rest of Noir finished their set flawlessly. As they bowed and exited the stage, the MCs announced that a few more awards were given out, the next performance would be EXO. Noir made their way back to the dressing room.
“I forgot EXO was performing,” Chunhei observed.
“Speaking of EXO,” Chanmi started, “some of them seem to be big fans of us.” She looked directly at Eunbin. “And by us, I mean-”
“Please don’t finish that sentence,” pleaded Eunbin.
Chanmi laughed. “I’m just saying, you might want to give him a chance-”
“No.” Eunbin could feel her face heating up. “I never want to talk to Baekhyun for the rest of my life.” Chanmi looked over Eunbin’s shoulder, and the smile fell from her face. “Ah, I’m sure you don’t mean that.”
Eunbin furrowed her brow. It wasn’t like Chanmi to insinuate that she was lying. She opened her mouth to retort, but was cut off by a surprise pat on the back.
“Ouch. And here I was trying to find you so I could tell you how well you did on stage.” Baekhyun appeared from behind Eunbin, the chain on his face twinkling in the dim light. “I’m hurt,” he pouted.
Eunbin panicked. “Oh, no, I didn’t mean it like that, I… I just…”
“Just accept the compliment,” Baekhyun smiled. He turned to speak to Chanmi. “All of you did well. It was nice to see a rookie group with so much talent.”
Chanmi bowed to the grey haired idol. “Thank you. We’re doing our best!”
With that, Baekhyun made his way to wherever the rest of EXO was. Eunbin waited until she could no longer see Baekhyun to turn back to Chanmi. They both looked at each other for a moment, unable to find the words to say.
Chanmi spoke first. “You didn’t know he was there…”
“That doesn’t make me feel any better! I just insulted Baekhyun right in front of his face!” Eunbin buried her face in Chanmi’s shoulder. “I’m so embarrassed...”
Chanmi patted her on the back. “It’s not the end of the world, you’ll recover from this eventually.”
Bomi and Chunhei peeked their heads from around the corner.
“What’s taking you so long? We have to get back to our seats!” Said Chunhei.
Eunbin looked up at Chanmi, making a face so pitiful that Chanmi had to try hard not to laugh. “We’re coming!”
The fans of Noir, called Étoiles (which means “stars” in French), cheered for the members as they made their way back to their designated seats. Bomi waved as she sat down next to Eunbin.
“I saw Baekhyun in the hallway,” she whispered. “Did you talk to him?”
Eunbin sighed. “I can’t talk about it, it’s too embarrassing.”
Bomi laughed and squished Eunbin’s cheeks. “Aww, poor baby!”
A few fans screamed in the background. “Please don’t embarrass me any more than I already am,” Eunbin pleaded.
Bomi raised her eyebrows. “I didn’t realize it was that bad…” She was about to ask what happened when the MCs returned to the stage.
“Now for the next award: Best New Female Group!”
The girls all grabbed each others hands - this was it. They prayed that their fans voted for them half as fervently as their families had.
“The Best New Female Group goes to… NOIR!”
Bomi stood up abruptly, and the other members all looked at each other in disbelief. The fans were cheering so loud that Eunbin almost couldn’t hear Chanmi say “I have to give an acceptance speech??”
As if in autopilot, the girls made their way to the stage. They bowed, and the MC gave the award to Bomi. Meanwhile, Chanmi approached the mic hesitantly to give a speech.
“No one tells you how hard it is to give a speech before you become the leader,” she said, glancing toward her members and the award they’d just won. “This is all thanks to you guys - the fans, the staff, everyone who has supported us. We have worked very hard for this, but we couldn’t have earned this award without you guys believing in us.” Tears formed in Chanmi’s eyes, and she had to look away. The crowd clapped and “awwed,” and the members patted her on the back and told her not to cry. It was a bit hypocritical considering they were all already crying. Eunbin tried the hardest to hide it, but failed miserably. Chunhei’s mascara began to run down her face, and Bomi hid behind Eunbin’s back.
“Ah, sorry,” Chanmi continued. “I want to also thank God and our families for always being there for us. Thank you all again for this award. We promise to always be a Noir that you can be proud to support. I love you all!” The members bowed, and Bomi blew kisses to the fans. While they walked back to their seats, the area went dark - the next performance was about to begin. They sat down, and red lights appeared on the stage, showing the silhouettes of EXO. The crowd screamed their heads off as the intro to “Obsession” started.
Chanmi tapped Bomi’s arm. “I’m obsessed with this song!”
Bomi rolled her eyes. “Please stop.”
The group watched the performance intently, Bomi trying to mentally improve her dancing and Chanmi bopping her head to the beat. Eunbin, on the other hand, felt awkward. She had to watch the performance since she was being watched by people with cameras, but she didn’t want to see the performance. EXO was performing flawlessly, as always, but Baekhyun... he was powerful on stage. He was almost handsome... Eunbin’s palms were starting to get clammy, and she held them together in her lap. She waited for more awkward eye contact, but the dreaded moment never came. Baekhyun didn’t even look remotely in Eunbin’s direction. She was a little disappointed; she realized that she might’ve actually hurt Baekhyun’s feelings. She may dislike the guy, but she would never purposely try to hurt him.
While she sat there, feeling defeated, the other members clapped and cheered for EXO’s amazing performance.
Bomi nudged Eunbin with her elbow. “People will notice if you don’t clap,” she said through her teeth. Eunbin immediately started clapping.
“Thanks.”
“Don’t mention it, seriously. Some people can read lips.”
Eunbin watched the EXO members leave the stage. She couldn’t tell if they were looking her way while they waved to the crowd, but she smiled just in case a certain someone might see her.

“Hyung!” Kai yelled. Baekhyun grabbed the doorframe and turned his head. “Will you get me a water too?”
“Eh, maybe.” Baekhyun smirked and walked into the hallway.
EXO was in the middle of practicing one of their choreographies for an upcoming performance at the MAMA awards. The pressure was on, and the soreness was setting in. As Baekhyun made his way toward the SM Vending Machine with special SM Water and SM Snacks, he practiced the footwork for the choreo. He was so focused that he failed to notice the group of girls trying to navigate their way safely around him.
“Ba ba ba 2, 3, and- oh!” Baekhyun surprised himself as he accidentally bumped into one of the girls. He quickly bowed and apologized, but when he saw the girl’s face, he felt the tips of his ears turn red.
“Eunbin?”
“Hi…” Eunbin hesitated. The other members stopped in their tracks, shocked that the two knew each other.
“How are you here?” Baekhyun’s voice reached a higher and louder pitch than before.
“I just debuted?” Eunbin tucked a lock of pink hair behind her ear. “Uh… I have to… go… do something.” She turned to walk the other way and the members quickly bowed to their superior and followed Eunbin around the corner. Baekhyun was left standing there stupidly, eyes wide, looking and feeling like a fool.
“Soo-man debuted a new girl group and I didn’t notice? AND Eunbin is in it? Seriously, way to make a good impression all these years later.”
He shook his head and returned to his mission: getting a water for himself… and Kai, too.
———
Eunbin walked with the rest of the members of Noir in a tense silence. She didn’t necessarily lie when she said she had to go do something, she just… she lied. The girls had already finished their practice for the day, so they were headed back to the dorm. To do nothing.
The awkward atmosphere was too much to bear for Kim Bomi, and she broke as soon as the car door closed. “Okay, spill. How do you know Baekhyun?”
Eunbin sighed. “I don’t really want to talk about it.”
“Come on, that makes us want to know even more!” The others agreed with enthusiasm.
“He was friends with my brother when they were in high school. He used to hang out at our house sometimes.”
“Did you date?!” Chunhei exclaimed.
Chanmi gave Chunhei a light whack on the arm. “She was in middle school at the time! There’s no way they dated.” She hesitated a moment. “You didn’t date, right?”
Eunbin’s face contorted. “Absolutely not. I hated him!”
“Huh? Why?” Bomi tilted her head in a questioning manner.
“He annoyed the crap out of me. I would almost say he bullied me, but I don’t think he meant to hurt my feelings. He just got on my nerves so much!” Eunbin covered her face with her hands and felt her blood starting to boil. “And here I was, dreading the day I'd have to face him and he didn’t even know I was at SM! Aish...”
“Baekhyun boutta catch these hands,” Bomi claimed with no intention of actually fighting the guy.
The girls laughed and and changed the subject, but Eunbin couldn’t help but wonder how Baekhyun even remembered her. He didn’t even keep in contact with her brother after EXO debuted! It didn’t really matter to her at all, though. She hated the guy! Well, hate was a bit of a strong word - she strongly disliked him. But why did he remember her? It didn’t make any sense…
———
“Here’s your water,” Baekhyun handed the bottle to Kai.
“Wow, so generous!” He took the bottle and nearly drank half of it in one go.
Baekhyun made a disapproving face. “You’re gonna drown yourself doing that.”
Kai finished hydrating and gave Baekhyun a thumbs up.
“Back to work, boys!” Suho ordered as he remained seated on the ground.
Everyone but Baekhyun groaned. He couldn’t stop thinking about Eunbin. He hadn’t seen her since he was in high school. He was a few years ahead of her, but he saw her a lot because he hung out with her brother pretty often. He never told anyone, but he always thought she was kinda cute - even more so now that she’d grown up. Was that weird? Probably. Baekhyun suddenly began to regret teasing her so much back then. He was a little harsh to her, especially since he was immature and thought that if you annoyed a girl to death she might like you back. “Yikes, I should apologize…”
“BAEKHYUN. I SAID WE ARE GETTING BACK TO WORK NOW.” Suho yelled. All the members were now waiting for Baekhyun to join them at the back of the room.
Baekhyun snapped back into reality. “Yes! Back to work!” He walked toward them and the mirrored wall. “By the way, did Sooman-nim debut a new girl group recently?”
Chanyeol scoffed. “Are you serious? Noir debuted last week and their M/V already has millions of views. How did you not know about that? The EXO Twitter even tweeted about them to promote, and-”
“Yah, I get it!” Baekhyun whacked Chanyeol in the arm. He was embarrassed enough because of his ignorance for one day.
Baekhyun resolved that he must find a way to make it up to Eunbin. All he had to do was apologize and… smile? That would work, right?
Either way, he had to get back to practice or else he’d face the wrath of his leader.
