“I only know how to exist when I’m wanted” Girls like us are hardly ever wanted you know. We’re used up and sad and drunk and perpetually waiting by the phone for someone to pick up and tell us that we did good.
Mary Lambert — I Know Girls (Body Love)

It's scary how close I was to not having some of the best nights of my life. If I didn't meet that one guy at that one happy hour. If I went to a different college. If I didn't take that job or that class or join that gym or go to that restaurant on that day at that time. And no matter how grateful I am that things worked out the way they did, I can't help but think of all the people I didn't meet at all the happy hours I didn't go to. And all the things that almost didn't happen to me and all the different memories that would have replaced them.

Most of the time the universe speaks to us very quietly in pockets of silence, in coincidences, in nature, in forgotten memories, in the shape of clouds, in moments of solitude, in small tugs at our hearts.

My solitude doesn't depend on the presence or absence of people; on the contrary, I hate who steals my solitude without, in exchange, offering me true company.

Solitude is a fount of healing which makes my life worth living. Talking is often a torment for me, and I need many days of silence to recover from the futility of words.

My solitude was cold, there was no denying that, but it was also serene, wonderfully serene and vast like the cold serene space in which the stars revolve.

I always feel good when I am alone. Solitude isn't frightening—it's strengthening.

I am perpetually stuck between the desire to connect deeply with those I love and the desire to live in utter solitude. I fear equally, being disconnected from myself as much as I fear being disconnected from others.
The more time I spend alone, I feel the tug from two directions: the need to step outside my isolation and encounter the world outside of myself…and the desire to protect the world within from the unsolicited disturbances from the world without.

Space around me where my soul can breathe
I’ve got body that my mind can leave
Nothing else matters, I don’t care what I miss
Company’s okay
Solitude is bliss
There’s a party in my head and no one is invited."

Find meaning. Distinguish melancholy from sadness. Go out for a walk. It doesn’t have to be a romantic walk in the park, spring at its most spectacular moment, flowers and smells and outstanding poetical imagery smoothly transferring you into another world. It doesn’t have to be a walk during which you’ll have multiple life epiphanies and discover meanings no other brain ever managed to encounter. Do not be afraid of spending quality time by yourself. Find meaning or don’t find meaning but 'steal' some time and give it freely and exclusively to your own self. Opt for privacy and solitude. That doesn’t make you antisocial or cause you to reject the rest of the world. But you need to breathe. And you need to be.
Albert Camus, from Notebooks 1951-1959
