Chapter 4 up! Tae and Pri learn more about this mysterious boarding school and rapline runs a heist. :)

So, I know “Butter” isn’t supposed to have deep meaning. RM himself said in 50 interviews that its message is “simple” and it’s “just a summer song.”

But, you know. If you’re the sort of person who likes making meaning, you totally can with “Butter”. Even from the lyrics alone. 

So, the first theme I see is confidence, the idea of knowing one’s own power, especially in lines like “I’ll melt your heart into two”, “I got that superstar glow”, “making you sweat like that”, “making you fall like that”. 

All of which build up an image of not just “I’m irresistible” but “I’m irresistible specifically to YOU and I KNOW it.“ 

And then there’s the theme of crime and thieving– “like a criminal undercover,” “breakin’ into your heart”, and “sweep you up like a robber.”

Like “your attraction to me may have snuck up on YOU but that was MY plan all along,” implying they’re aware and in control (“straight up, I got ya”), and none of this is coincidence. :)

The theme of control continues within many lines–"pull you in like no other” and “we gon make you rock and you say”, etc. Even “side step, left, right to my beat” means they’re the ones leading. 

There’s a nice contrast happening in the lines “Know that I got that heat” being followed by “let me show you ‘cause talk is cheap”.  

“Know” gets no pronoun before it, so it’s like a command–  just KNOW IT. But its then followed up with “Let me show you”, saying they will prove it to us, they will earn that power/devotion through their actions. 

On to the rapline bits. I was trying to figure out the “ice on my wrist” reference, and according to genius.com it’s related to fancy watches and status jewelry.

And it’s like Suga’s playing with the idea of, “yeah, we have the status symbols and the fame and whatnot, but we also are good people”–  ice/nice, right body/right mind, right vibe for the party. Whether you hate them or love them, they are smooth/good/powerful. 

I admit I’m not quite sure where RM’s going with the first two lines of his part (“Fresh boy” = ??) but “all the playas get movin’ when the bass low” on the surface seems to be “our song makes everyone dance”, another statement of power or influence. 

But then “Got ARMY right behind us when we say so” is absolutely a declaration of “we have support, we know our worth, we know our power, we don’t need validation from people who don’t get it”, echoing the hate us/love us idea. 

And j-hope’s part is all “We are awesome/cool/irresistible and we PERSEVERE” and they are 100% aware of their effect on us (“you know we don’t stop”, “you be like ‘oh my god’”)

And the last bit has interesting punctuation: “Hotter? Sweeter! Cooler? Butter!” The question & response format suggests they’re not whatever normal “hot” and “cool” are– they’re sweeter and they’re “butter” (which is different and better than being cool). 

So although it is a fun, summer song, it’s also, imo, a fairly strong declaration of knowing their own power while acknowledging they have earned/have to earn that power with their actions.

So yeah. That’s where I went with it. Your mileage may vary. :)
