American Woodcock demonstrates "distal rhynchokinesis," the ability to flex the end of its bill. This allows it to grab earthworms it encounters when probing in soil. Other shorebirds, including Dunlins & Sanderlings, can bend their bills in this way. ๐
Getting glazed pottery out of the kiln is always a bit nerve wracking to me. Because a lot of the time Iโve spent a long time on a piece, with sculptural elements and little details, and thereโs always a chance the glaze justโฆwonโt work. But sometimes something comes out of the kiln looking exactly like I wanted. This tea set is one of those times.

โThis is a historic win, it doesnโt belong to just meโฆ This is for every little rez kid, every little urban kid, every little Native kid out there who has a dream, who is seeing themselves represented and our stories told, by ourselves, in our own words.โ
Sending a warm congratulations to Lily Gladstone for becoming the first Indigenous person to win a Golden Globe for best actress!ย
โBigger than the Oscarsโ: Blackfeet Nation honors Lily Gladstone with stand-up headdress
BROWNINGย โ Wearing a white sequin shawl and matching ribbon skirt, esteemed actress Lily Gladstone kneeled on the floor of the new arbor on the Blackfeet Reservation as tribal elders placed a stand-up headdress atop her head.ย
Thousands of people who traveled across the countryย โ and from Canadaย โ to honor Gladstone watched in silence.ย
Gladstone stood and embraced tribal leaders. Then, with one hand over her heart and the other holding onto Charlene Plume, the elder who made her headdress, Gladstone danced in a circle around the arbor. Members of the Womenโs Stand-Up Headdress Society, tribal leaders, dignitaries, students, teachers and children followed behind.
The sound of drums boomed, and the crowd erupted.ย
Gladstone, who grew up in Browning and East Glacier, recently rose to worldwide fame after starring in Martin Scorseseโs โKillers of the Flower Moonโ alongside Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio.ย
She made history, becoming the first Indigenous person to win a Golden Globe award for best actress and the first to be nominated for best actress at the Oscars.ย
At Tuesdayโs eventย โ which included a grand entry, flag song, prayer, speeches from dignitaries, honor song and round danceย โ leaders thanked Gladstone for representing the Blackfeet Nation on the world stage and for being a role model for young people.
โBecause of you, rez kids on every reservation here and in Canada can chase their dreams,โ Councilman Everett Armstrong said at the event. โStudents, take a look at this accomplishmentย โ itโs possible.โ
Councilman Robert DesRosier delighted in the fact that Gladstone โis just like us.โ
โSheโs us,โ he told the crowd before turning to Gladstone. โLily, welcome home.โ
More than 50 members of the Womenโs Stand-Up Headdress Society โ a group of contemporary Blackfoot women in the U.S. and Canada who own such headdresses โ traveled to Browning to celebrate Gladstone.ย Theda New Breast, a member of the society, said Tuesday marked the largest gathering of stand-up headdress members to date.
