5 Things to Look Forward to in May
Each month, we feature five events going on at the #MooreSchool and at #UofSC. Here is what is happening in May.
1. GRADUATION!!!: Our Moore School Seniors are about to graduate this Friday, May 11! We’re so proud of all the hard work you’ve put in over the past few years - we know it wasn’t easy but we hope it was worth it! As you move forward into the world we hope you’ll think back on your time here as a Gamecock with fondness and good memories. If you need more information about commencement, follow this link to find specific dates and times as well as the link to a live stream for those who can’t make it to commencement.
Tumblr media
2. Hooding Ceremony: The Hooding Ceremony is a special recognition for graduates receiving a final master’s degree or a Ph.D. The ceremony is a time when individual schools and programs can recognize the individual accomplishments of their graduates in a more personal way than is permitted at our general commencement. The Darla Moore School of Business Hooding Ceremony will take place on May 10 from 9:30-10:45 on the Horseshoe.
Tumblr media
3. Start of Summer Classes: Summer classes begin on May 14. The summer semester is divided into multiple parts of term which vary in length to assist you in creating a schedule custom to your needs. Click this link for more information regarding scheduling, dates, and deadlines.
4. World Day for Cultural Diversity: May 21 is World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development. The United Nations says “cultural diversity is a driving force of development, not only with respect to economic growth, but also as a means of leading a more fulfilling intellectual, emotional, moral and spiritual life ... this day provides us with an opportunity to deepen our  understanding of the values of cultural diversity.” Let’s use this day as a way to give thanks for the great diversity we’ve fostered here at the #MooreSchool! Find out more about our values and objectives regarding diversity and inclusion here.
5. Memorial Day: For many Americans, Memorial Day evokes the smell of burgers on the grill and the image of summertime, but make sure to take time on May 28 to remember those we’ve lost in the armed forces. For more information about our students in the military, click here.

6 tips from the Center for Business Communication during midterms
Midterms are upon us and many students are cramming for exams, presentations and reports. If you have a big writing assignment or exam coming up, these 6 tips can help.
1. Don’t be afraid to write something awful when starting out. Write now; revise later! ✍️
2. Make sure to build in time to edit and proofread your writing before turning it in. Start early and avoid procrastination. ⏰
3. You can’t produce smart work if you’re exhausted. Take a nap 💤, eat a snack 🍎, and revisit your work with a clear head 💡.
4. A proven way to retain info is to write about it—summarize or reflect on what you’re studying instead of just dragging a highlighter across your notes 🖊.
5. Go solo! 📖 Research from The Social Science Research Council found that students studying in groups don’t perform as well as students studying alone.
6. Build studying in as a part of your daily routine so you don’t resort to ineffective cramming later. 📅
The Center for Business Communication provides free consultation services to business school students on various types of communication projects, including essays, group presentations and research projects. They can help students with brainstorming ideas, developing PowerPoints and working on team projects. Stop by and see them today!

What’s new at the Moore School
The new school year is here! Gear up for another great year by learning what’s new at the #MooreSchool.
1. New Statistics Course. Over the past year, the Moore School has rolled out several changes as part of its Undergraduate Excellence Initiative. One key piece of the initiative is increasing rigor in the classroom — especially in statistics and data training. Statistics for Business and Economics (MGSC 291) will now focuses on more abstract, real-world problems, using a data modeling platform called Kaggle.
Tumblr media
2. New Food at the Global Cafe. The Global Cafe will have a new menu this year, since the university has switched food service providers. But don’t worry, it will still have a variety of delicious choices! Be on the look out for the new dishes soon!
Tumblr media
3. Sales Courses. The Moore School has launched sales courses for marketing majors. These classes give students the ability to pursue a concentration in sales within the marketing major, helping to prepare them for their future careers.
Tumblr media
4. New Student Health Center. This summer, the University of South Carolina unveiled its new 68,000 square feet state-of-the-art student health center located behind Russell House. The bigger facility allows for more physical therapy rooms, an expanded pharmacy and x-ray services available for students. More information on the new facility can be found here: https://www.sa.sc.edu/shs/newhealthcenter/.

9 Books Business Leaders Should Read
In honor of National Book Lover’s Day, we asked #MooreSchool faculty and staff for their recommendations on what books business leaders should read. Here are their suggestions:
1.  Mark Newsome (Department of Marketing, Lecturer)
Recommendation: “Hillbilly Elegy” by J.D. Vance.  Why: “A first-hand account of a growing up demographic usually overlooked by sociologist and politicians. A usually unheard American story.”
Tumblr media
2.  Alise Svihla (Office of Career Management)
Recommendation: “The Power of Positive Leadership” by Jon Gordon.  Why: “The Power of Positive Leadership is a must-read for anyone who wants to become a better leader; it is packed with powerful tools and teaches you strategies for becoming a positive leader.”
Tumblr media
3. Alice Leri (Associate Dean for Diversity and Inclusion)
Recommendation: "Whistling Vivaldi" by Claude M. Steele.     Why: “It is a book that explores how stereotypes affect our lives and influence our behaviors. It is important that students learn to reflect on their identities and mental models during such an important stage of their life. Being twenty is all about discovering who you really are and questioning what you might have learned. We all have a history, a background that shapes the way we make sense of reality. And it is important we start to reflect on how we involuntary perpetrate inequalities through our words and our actions.”
Tumblr media
4.  Kacie Ingram (Office of Career Management)
Recommendation: “Presence: Bring your Boldest Self to your Biggest Challenges” by Amy Cuddy.     Why: “This book provides real examples of how to have presence in all aspects of your life to build confidence, communicate effectively, to command respect, and inspire others.”
Tumblr media
5.  Barbara Bolt (Center of Business Communication)
Recommendation: “Beowulf”  Why: “I recommend that students read a good translation of Beowulf, an anonymous, 1200-year-old poem of about 3000 lines that highlights the important skill of discernment and provides instruction regarding professional communication situations - both of these things are very important in the arena of business.”
Tumblr media
6. Katherine White (Office of Career Management)
Recommendation: “Blink: The Power of Thinking without Thinking” by Malcolm Gladwell. Why: “Blink” is about how we think without thinking, about choices that seem to be made in an instant-in the blink of an eye-that actually aren’t as simple as they seem.
Tumblr media
7. David Crockett (Department of Marketing, Associate Professor)
Recommendation: “Latinos, Inc: The Marketing & Making of a People” by Arlene D'Avila. Why: “Segmentation -- dividing up a diverse marketplace into distinct groups, each of which has some unifying theme -- is the defining feature of marketing. But we often teach it as if it just happens; as if some executive just snaps his or her fingers and voila! people just naturally cluster into tidy little segments. In real life, it's much messier. Latinos, Inc. walks the reader through how what we call the "Hispanic market segment" came to be constructed from a wide variety of very different nationalities from Central and South America, Mexico, the US, and the Caribbean. This book is history. It's sociology. It's cultural studies. It's anthropology. But it is also very much marketing. It's a great read!”
Tumblr media
8. Doreen Lund (Office of Career Management)
Recommendation:  “I Will Teach You To Be Rich” by Ramit Sethi.     Why: “It happens to be the first personal finance books for young people recommended by Business Insider.”
Tumblr media
9. Laura Lambdin (Center for Business Communication)
Recommendation: “How to Win Friends & Influence People in the Digital Age” by Dale Carnegie Why: Offers advice for contemporary readers on how to effectively communicate in the digital world.
