ATA Football
vimeo
Titles design and animation work for Gravity Media. First launched in September 2020, ATA football is an American over-the-top sports streaming service. The service carries live and on-demand streaming of women's soccer events from various countries. (This was not the final audio. It's just a track I used to help build the edit.)

On My Screen - Chelsea TV
vimeo
I've been terrible at updating my website and showreel but I have been busy freelancing at The Mill, Red Bee and Input Media (now known as Gravity Media) over the last couple of years. It was through the graphics department at Gravity that I got in with Chelsea TV and this is something I worked on one afternoon at the end of last season, in the build-up to the Europa League Final. I've started taking quick end-of play iphone videos to show my kids what I've been up to when I get home, if they're interested! I've realised that shooting them off my screen like this makes it easier for people to understand my part in the production - that it's been built on a computer. It also suits this kind of quick or piecemeal work that wouldn't necessarily make it on to a showreel. So, I'll post these up for now while I think about updating my website!

I have worked with Nick on numerous projects and have always found him a highly reliable and creatively dependable artist. Whether it is working with fellow designers, directors or other creative departments; Nick brings ideas and solutions to make projects run smoother and ultimately guarantee delivery of the highest quality. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend, and hope to work with him again in the future.

We've been fortunate to work with Nick on a good number of projects over the years. He's always taken a different direction on the brief, which our clients both internal and external fully appreciate. He has the ability to run projects from scratch or jump in when we're getting hectic and we have complete faith that both creatively and technically he'll always deliver.

Caught up with an old work colleague freelancing at Chelsea TV before Christmas. Lots of quick turnaround projects so nothing to show off too much about but I enjoyed this one. Follow the link above to the Chelsea TV Facebook page. I spent an afternoon giving the piece a New York, Hip-Hop style vibe including some tags and grimey grade.

BBC WSL Titles
vimeo
One fact stuck in my head the other night watching a Basquiat documentary: Back in the 70’s, New York was full of artists who wanted to try everything; they painted, sculpted, wrote poetry, played in bands. They wanted to be polymaths. I’m sensing this is becoming the modern way too, with graduates relying on their wits to jump from one career path to another, applying and learning different skills along the way. One place I’m lucky enough to experience something vaguely resembling this variety is at Input Media in West London and the ‘BBC Women’s Football’ job I did for them recently is a perfect example. Input’s Creative Director, Paul Hanson, had already developed a treatment for the titles, loosely inspired by the 'American Gods' sequence, but to help ease his busy schedule he asked me to direct the shoot. It was just a one day shoot in the Great Hall at Wembley stadium, to coincide with a big media event marking the start of the season, but luckily, we were able to get in the previous evening to do most of our setting up. The shoot was pretty straightforward and mainly involved challenging the girls to run around the lights without knocking them over.
The following week, while Paul edited the title sequence, I was tasked with designing the studio background graphic. I built an abstract design using broken panels of a 3D ball and the pinky/purple brand colours. The hi-res graphic is printed on 6mm perspex and then backlit in the studio at Input Media.
Finally, Premiership Rugby wanted to bring some unity to all their clubs' stadium screen graphics and asked Input to pitch some ideas. I think Paul was looking for something a bit different from their in-house style, so he asked me to work on it.

OK, so it's not exactly painting, poetry and rock bands but I don't suppose you become a polymath overnight.

DFS Winter Sale
vimeo
I was at Krow Communications before Christmas, working with producer Veronica Saez on the DFS 'Winter Sale' website animation. We had to co-ordinate with The Mill who were creating the 30 second TV ad so I referenced certain elements that they'd started to develop. Most of what you see though, such as the glass globe, was built from scratch because our delivery date fell before theirs. Clicking on the masthead expands the screen which then loops until you click again to shake the snow globe and set off the full sequence. On the real website, this ended in a carousel of sofa choices to view.

Animate a hue/saturation effect in AE over a set of individual gradients and they all react slightly differently. I was asked to design a quick treatment for a World Health Organsiation (WHO) film recently so I developed this background which could be used in different ways uniting a mix of vt, text and graphics. Super simple but I thought it had a certain hypnotising charm.
