RIP IT UP & START AGAIN Jan 27th 2022 from russell craig richardson on Vimeo.
A 'proof-of-concept' trailer for a four-part series covering the post-punk scenes of the years 1978-82, using Simon Reynolds' book 'Rip It Up + Start Again' as a roadmap.
This version is a rough mix and color correction.
The eventual series will combine conversational interviews with musicians and artists who first achieved recognition in the epoch, along with archive performances and current music by the same artists, and a close look at the worldviews and contributions, influences and cultural currents of the people concerned, and how the lessons of post-punk can apply across disciplines today, 40 years later.
Oh, and municipal housing policy, too.
The end credits detail the musicians and music used in the video, and add a list of those who have agreed to participate as well as a shorter list of artists we have yet to confirm as participants.

O N E E V E R Y O N E • Ohio from Ann Hamilton on Vimeo.
The newsprint book in this video is part of an ongoing public art project O N E E V E R Y O N E. Thick like an old phone book, its 1200 pages are filled with images of people photographed standing behind a semi-transparent membrane that renders in focus only the points where the body is in contact with the material. The images, a consequence of the condition: hidden behind the membrane but revealed by touch, contain for me a sense of privacy but also an intimacy not possible in a time so aware of every point of contact, of every surface we touch, or are in exchange touched by. The figure suspended, ethereal, is perhaps the alone together we are now living. I asked Bill Frisell if he would make a house recording for the book. Bill has performed many times at the Wexner Center, and his music always stirs a place in me, deeply felt, a place I might now call HOPE. It was April; I was in Ohio, and Bill was in New York. The video is, like sound a form of touch across a distance, our collaboration. The people in this book are students, faculty, staff, and community members at The Ohio State University who offered themselves to the process when we set up the membrane and camera in the public corridor of Thompson Library—a main artery on campus—during fall and winter of 2019-20. Our human impulse is to extend our hands outward, to know the world through all the reciprocities of our touch. While it is impossible to now pass this book from hand to hand as part of the University Sesquicentennial celebration, this video of the book, turned page by page, becomes its sharing. Some will recognize in Bill’s recording the university Alma Mater Carmen Ohio and be reminded of the feeling of standing, listening, and singing together.
Special thanks to Phyllis Oyama, Michael Mercil, Katie Hall, Ken Aschliman, and Chuck Helm to my studio Kara Gut, Jessica Naples Grilli, and Nick Larsen along with graduate students Dareen Hussein and Nalani Stolz.
The work is made possible by The Wexner Center for the Arts, Thompson Library, and The Office of the President at The Ohio State University.
