Assessment 3 - Storyboards
Below is the sequence of the storyboards, and it may or may not change for Assessment 4.

The video starts with the title screen; "Welcome to... Crash Course To Dinosaurs!", followed by a pop-up of a simple dinosaur doodle and the number 101 on the screen.

A line appears expanding from the left corner of the screen to the right, indicating the long timeline evolution of how dinosaurs came to be and after their extinction. The composition will then zoom in to the Mesozoic Period, outlining three main periods. It then zooms in further, with texts showing how long each period spans, where afterwards the video pans quickly to the right to showcase each period briefly.

The layout of each explanation will be fairly simple, and dinosaur illustrations will pop up on the screen, followed by text (this composition will most likely be changed in Assessment 4).
This section will repeat for three times; for the Triassic Period, Jurassic Period, and the Cretaceous Period.

The outro features a text saying "Extinct?" while briefly explaining the end of the dinosaur period. The jaw of the dinosaur's skeleton will then fall out of the composition.

The end of the video will be a repeat of the title screen, with the exception of the dinosaur doodle replaced with its jawless skull instead.

Above is a rough estimate of how long the video will span. This timing may or may not change for the final production of the video.

Assessment 3 - Design Elements (Part 2)

Assets and Color Scheme:
The illustrations are hand drawn using Procreate, focusing on more rounded edges for each dinosaur illustration. Hand drawing art style would suit the audience profile more, as it has more flexibility in creating thick and thin lines when needed for the outline of the illustrations.
The color palette uses a square color scheme from the color wheel as these color combinations would suit the audience profile as well.

Title Screen/Branding Identity:
The title screen is done using Adobe Illustrator using "Chalkboy" font written on chalkboard. There is a very simplified doodle of a T-rex head on the right. The color scheme and overall design of the title screen may or may not be revised for Assessment 4.

Assessment 3 - Design Elements (Part 1)
Infographics and Art Style Moodboard:

Considering the audience profile, the general look of the design will use these guidelines:
Mostly handwriting-style or rounded typeface for the typography
Vibrant colors to grab the attention of the viewers, mainly children and teens
Cartoon-style illustration, using block colors and simplified forms
Rounded edges for the infographics and data visualization
Possible Font Choices:

There are four fonts I have narrowed down that I will possibly use for the branding identity; "Chalkboy", "Dinosaur", "Gampolins Demo", and "Jackpot". One of these fonts will be used as a main font, with three varieties combined with body text to see which font would be most suitable for the video.
These fonts are chosen due to its chalky or handwritten style, as well as "Gampolins Demo" being a rounded typeface. The body text is kept simple using a Sans Serif font called "The Students Teacher Regular" as this text is still legible enough for general audience. The text presented on the screen will most likely be bullet points as to not overwhelm the audience.
Music:
The background music used will most likely be an upbeat piano tune on loop, as this can be considered easily listening for children and general audience. An example would be this music: Cheerful children's play music LIST/Playtime music List for kids BGM

Assessment 3 - Analysis of Three Motion Graphic Examples
“This Incredible Animation Shows How Deep The Ocean Really Is”:
youtube
Technical Analysis:
The animation most likely uses Adobe After Effects as infographics and data visualizations mostly uses this software. Adobe Illustrator is most likely used to create the illustrations (with several elements using gradient for shading, though not all (for example, the bathtub and volcano illustration). Flat-colored illustrations are typically vector art. The background most likely uses other drawing software such as Photoshop as the clouds seem to be more blended as well as the ocean’s surface.
Mood and Aesthetic Analysis:
The art style uses 2D flat-color illustrations, featuring mostly block-colors. The art style may be inspired by Corporate Memphis; a subgenre inspired by the 1980s Memphis Group. This subgenre mainly has a clean look with vibrant colors.
Motion Graphic Principles:
REPETITION: there is a bar to indicate the ocean's depth, while different colors are used to represent the measurement of each ocean's zone.
CONTRAST: This can be seen with the blue whale's size in comparison to the size of a human being.
CONTRAST, ALIGNMENT, and PROXIMITY: There is contrast in regard to the colors of the shrimps and the volcano’s lava, and in contrast to the black background. Alignment can be seen in how the thermometer is placed adjacent to the main illustration, while proximity is seen in the distance between the thermometer and the shrimps on the volcano.
SLOW IN SLOW OUT: At 0:24 when the blue whale dives deeper into the ocean, there is a slow out at the end of the animation. The same goes with the Mount Everest animation (at 2:20) as this scene has more visible slow in and slow out.
Use of Infographics for Data Visualization:
This video mostly relies on lines to indicate ocean depth, where a bar filled with different colors represent how deep each part is. Most data visualization in this video only uses text and lines to indicate measurements (for example, at 0:19 (bathtub) to indicate the bathtub's measurements, and at 2:54 to show the ocean's depth). A thermometer may also count as data visualization, but this can also fall under semiotics.
“What Actual Aliens Might Look Like”:
youtube
Technical Analysis:
Kurzgesagt uses After Effects to animate, with their workflow having been explained in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uFk0mgljtns.
Kurzgesagt mainly separate assets into parts and rig the illustrations for easier animating, while utilizing Adobe Illustrator for illustrations. This can be seen from the flat colors and gradient shadings on the illustrations.
Mood and Aesthetics Analysis:
Kurzgesagt’s art style mainly follows a consistent usage of vibrant colors, rounded shapes, and Western cartoon art style. They have a very specific art style which has become popular on the internet due to the color palette used in their animations, which can be seen in this video. The video also features very detailed illustrations using more flat colors for shading.
Motion Graphic Principles:
APPEAL: There is a very well-defined appeal to the illustration style which is unique to Kurzgesagt.
FOLLOW THROUGH: There is follow through seen in the bee's wing movement at 9:28, and at 2:27 where the fish's movement follows through its whole body, as well as at 3:14 with the aliens swimming.
REPETITION: Many illustrations, such as the ones at 2:15 with the seaweedus strangulans and at 1:46 featuring the occulus plant has repetition in the small circles moving around the illustration. There is also repetitive theme with the layout, seen at 1:46 with the column on the left and the illustration on the right.
GESTALT - CONTINUATION: There is visible continuation in the flow of animated lines throughout the video, such as lines orbiting planets, and lines that transitions to other animations.
Use of Infographics for Data Visualization:
Data visualization in this video mainly uses name or labels to emphasize what the illustrations are (at 0:39). Arrows are also used at 1:14 to indicate circulation of hot air meeting winds from icy outskirts, and it is also used at 9:23 to describe magnetic fields.
There is also emphasis on data using close-ups, with lines to indicate what is being emphasized by the narrator. This can be seen at 9:17 with the Ammonia illustration.
"What Humans Will Look Like In 1,000 Years | Insider Tech":
youtube
Technical Analysis:
The animation is most likely done with After Effects as the style of the animation is similar to the first video. The assets are most likely made in Adobe Illustrator as the flat shading is a major indicator of vector illustration.
Mood and Aesthetics Analysis:
The art style mostly uses 2D block-shading, and seems to be inspired by Corporate Memphis subgenre as well. The color scheme is very straight-forward in a sense that there is not much stylization to the illustrations in terms of art style and color scheme.
Motion Graphic Principles:
TIMING: The timing of animation is according to script, as most are visualized using semiotics.
STAGING: Many of the scene compositions features staging, such as the close up to the human’s faces to the microscopic zoom-ins on the blood vessels, then to the DNA. This then zooms back out to the humans and zooms out to a rocket.
REPETITION: The zoom-ins and zoom-outs are repetition used in the animation to further explain what the narrator saying.
CONTRAST: There is size contrast (at 0:31) with the woman’s head in comparison to the assets on the screen. There is also contrasting colors with the dog x-ray (at 0:50) as the skeletons are green in comparison to the black silhouette of the dog.
GESTALT - SIMILARITY: There is similarity at 1:35 visualizing the space suits of the woman and the man, indicating they are one type of group (in this case, the same species).
Use of Infographics for Data Visualization:
They mostly use assets for the video's explanation, meaning that there is not many infographics used for data visualization. Most data visualization is represented with illustrations instead of statistics or other infographic design (this is mainly seen in the dog x-ray and at 0:32). There is also repeated lines to indicate height comparison and text to indicate human heights (at 0:10).

Assessment 3 - Background Message
The topic of the video will focus on the Mesozoic period, which is the period when dinosaurs primarily evolved. The three Mesozoic period include:
Triassic Period (252 to 201 million years ago):
All continents in this period were just a single land mass (called Pangea). The environment during this period was hot and dry, and reptiles that we now know as dinosaurs first evolved in this era, as reptiles tend to flourish in hot climates. Dinosaurs found in this period include eoraptor and herrerasaurus.
2. Jurassic Period (201 to 145 million years ago):
In the Jurassic period, Pangea split into two: Laurasia in the North side of the globe, and Gondwana in the South. Temperatures slightly fell, and rainfalls increased. Dinosaurs in this period include brachiosaurus and stegosaurus.
3. Cretaceous Period (145 to 66 million years ago):
The land separated further apart into some of the continents we know today, meaning dinosaurs evolved differently in different parts of the world, becoming more diverse. Dinosaurs in this period include T-rex and Triceratops.
Focus of Message:
The message given from this educational will be sharing general information about each period and what dinosaurs exists in each period. The video will also deliver brief explanations on how dinosaurs evolved in each period, as described in the explanation above.
Another main message focuses on educating and sparking people's interests on dinosaurs.

Assessment 3 - Audience Profile
The audience profile of this video is primarily kids to teens, where secondary target is general audience. This is due to the topic chosen as educational content on dinosaurs generally do not have any mature content. Therefore, having kids, teens, and/or general audience is more reasonable.
The narration will be done in a simplified manner for the target audience to understand the content much easier.
The art style of the animation, typography design, as well as illustration will be done in a way to make it engaging and upbeat to provoke curiosity from the target audience. This will be explained further in the design elements blog post.

Assessment 3 - Statement of Intent
The intent of creating this video is to make educational content about dinosaurs, focusing on the Mesozoic period when dinosaurs first appeared. Only one period is chosen to narrow down the timeline of dinosaur existence, as its evolutionary timeline is very vast.

Hootbucks Coffee Assets

There are three varieties of the owl's expressions; the default is where he holds a coffee mug, another where the owl holds a cup of Hootbucks Coffee (immediately awake), and the last expression where he is barely sane and his lower eyelid twitching.
The assets are divided into layers which include the main body, head/face expressions, wings, glasses, and his eyebrows. The pupils are also separated on another layer to animate.
All assets are done in Procreate, and exported to Windows for easier editing in Adobe Photoshop during the blogging process.

Branding Identity

The logo of Hootbucks Coffee is done in Adobe Illustrator and follows a similar layout to Starbucks Coffee, with a different font. The icon of the logo is an owl with constricted pupils. The font used is Sans Serif called “Super Corn”, where the style of the font gives off a rather comical look to complement the design of the owl.
Several limitations of the branding identity are:
The logo can be used with black on white or bright colored backgrounds, but it should NOT be reversed, with the image below as an example on what would not work for the branding identity:

The logo is limited to two colors, and white or bright backgrounds are acceptable for the logo's placement (the yellow background is an example of a suitable color):

The logo should not be stretched or squashed horizontally or vertically.
The music and sound for the overall advertisement has not been finalized, but will use similar music such as the one used in Julian Smith’s video:
JULIAN SMITH - Pre-Blessed Food

Mood Boards
There are two mood boards made for this assessment; one is references for the art style of the assets (the owl and the environment) as well as real-life owls (and a Potoo bird) as references for the character’s facial expressions.
The second mood board are references for the logo design of Hootbucks Coffee, where stylized fonts may be used in the logo design while keeping the branding identity simple.

Storyboard Panels

The first panel has two slides of text, the first says "Awake..." sliding from the left, then "but at what cost?" sliding from the right.

The second and third panel showcases an insomniac owl working in an office, as he is seen nodding off to sleep and finally falling asleep on his desk despite the coffee pot almost emptied.
The third panel might be revised, as I might not need this panel for the second assessment.

The fourth panel shows a sped-up zoom in using a circular motion, showcasing Hootbucks Coffee's packaging.

The fifth panel introduces Hootbucks Coffee, with text saying "We introduce you Hootbucks Coffee!". The sixth panel shows a close-up of the owl's face, immediately awake, with exaggeration on the owl's pupils.

The seventh panel shows the owl giving a thumbs up, with his bottom eyelid twitching, with text saying "Now you will be awake FOREVER!" The eight panel showcases the packaging of the coffee again, and with a sped-up scrolling text indicating major health warnings if you consume this coffee. ____________________________

Above is an estimate of the time of the entire ad, totaling around 21 seconds. The sequence, timing, and text may or may not change in Assessment 2.

Analysis of Motion Graphic Design Examples
As the advertisement of this assessment will be comedic, I chose videos which I will reference the art style and animation from.
TWO || animation meme - YouTube
Technical Observation:
The animation most likely uses software such as Adobe Photoshop, Clip Studio Paint, or Procreate to draw the illustrations (an example is 0:03 as it shows a very sketch-like drawing). The animation most likely uses Adobe After Effect as there are many assets where puppet points are used to move the secondary character’s hair at the end of the animation.
Mood & Aesthetic Observation:
The colors used in the animation are very vibrant, with contrasting colors used especially for the background and the character’s eyes.
The aesthetic of the animation seems to be a blend between Western and Japanese comic style, where these kinds of art styles are now commonly seen in today’s generation of artists (ranging from 15 to early 20s), specifically seen in shorts or skits published on Tiktok, Instagram, and/or Youtube.
Motion Graphic Principles:
CONTRAST: There is contrast in the first two seconds where the character is dark blue animated on top of a yellow background.
STAGING: This is seen in the movement where the character moves side to side (positioning & composition of the character is placed on the left and right).
REPETITION: There is also repetition seen in the credits where the list of Patreon names roll. Timing: The character is animated according to the rhythm of the music. Follow through: The tail moves as the character swings his tail (0:09), and the ears follows the overlapping movement of the character at 0:16. _______________________
Red Flags (ft. Montaigne) OFFICIAL VIDEO
Technical Observation:
This second animation most likely also uses drawing softwares such as Adobe Photoshop, Clip Studio Paint, or Procreate to draw the assets present in the animation. The animation could possibly be done using Adobe After Effects as the assets do not move as much, and is quite similar to the techniques used in “TWO” (the first video example). However, this animation has more stylization and exaggeration compared to the first example.
Mood & Aesthetic Observation:
This video uses Western comic-book style with stylized coloring, mostly using color-blocking for the assets. The mood of the animation follows comedic genre, with colors ranging from a combination of red and warm colors to give contrast to the woman’s intimidating and eerie personality. On the other hand, the man’s color scheme follows mute colors, which gives perfect contrast to the woman’s color palette.
Motion Graphic Principles:
EXAGGERATION: Most if not all of the facial animations are very exaggerated, which fits the type of humor in the animation.
APPEAL: There is appeal in how the stylization of the drawings and animation is done, where the exaggerations done are the main appeal of the animation.
SECONDARY ACTION: There are many secondary actions in the video, where one can be seen in 0:40 where the woman flips open her human centipede cut-out, as this secondary action is present after the cut-out paper stretches and contracts very slightly at the end of the animation. At 0:22, the man flips open his wallet to reveal Scooby-Doo pictures, and during the last picture, there is a very slight swing seen on his wallet. At 0:45, the woman’s face shows some secondary actions, specifically seen on her eyebrows. CONTRAST: Contrast is mostly seen in the color palette used in the video, as some scenes uses darkened backgrounds (or characters) to contrast each other.
_______________________
CEREAL! - Animated Student Film
Technical Observation: The animation is done by a student from Vancouver Film School. The technicalities of this animation is listed at the end of the animation, where the student listed Toon Boom Harmony Premium, Toon Boom Storyboard Pro, Clip Studio Paint and Garage Band. Toon Boom programs are used for animation (seemingly, the animation is hand-drawn frame by frame), and Clip Studio Paint is most likely the program the student used to draw the assets in the video (CSP can be used for animation, but given that Toon Boom is listed in the video, it’s most likely the student relied on Toon Boom for animation purposes).
Mood & Aesthetic Observation: The color scheme follows a very mute theme, where contrasting colors are only necessary during specific scenes (such as when the character transformed into a dragon). The art style of the animation seems to be heavily inspired by Western cartoon style.
Motion Graphic Principles:
SQUASH & STRETCH: There is an apparent squash and stretch with the cereal box as the character attempts to rip it open with their mouth at 0:14.
ANTICIPATION: An example is at 0:13, the character zooms into her kitchen and lifts their leg, showing anticipation before it moves into the frame of the animation.
SLOW IN & SLOW OUT: This principle can be seen in 0:22 where the character takes the ring from the pile of cereal. The movement can be seen in their arms and fingers, specifically when they are about to put the ring on their finger.
FOLLOW THROUGH: This principle can be mostly seen in the character’s hair, as it follows the movement of the character throughout the animation. At 0:48, the tail of the dragon follows through the movement of the entire tail.
EXAGGERATION: There are many scenes where it involves exaggeration, one example is at 0:17 where the character pours the whole cereal box into a bowl and it towers more than 3x the size of the box. Another example is the general movement of the dragon as it breathes fire to the buildings.

Distribution Plan
Considering the audience profile being people around the age of early 20s to their 40s, they are more likely to work on their laptops more often during work hours.
Therefore, the video will be a 16:9 ratio, with platforms being mainly Youtube and other websites that features ads.

Background Story
The name of the animation is “Hootbucks Coffee”, where it entails an insomniac owl who is not able to stay awake for 9 to 5 jobs, no matter how much coffee he consumes per day.
It features the owl in an office setting where he tries his best to stay awake despite the amount of caffeine he has drank that day. In the background there is a coffee pot almost emptied (with text that reads "generic triple shot coffee" on the pot). He is then given a cup of "Hootbucks Coffee" where after taking a sip he is immediately energized.
At the end of the ad, the logo appears while there is a sped-up narration/description of a long list of health warnings.
Given the advertisement’s genre, the narration of the ad will be done by me in an exaggerated way. Below is an example of the exaggerated narration I will be doing:
JULIAN SMITH - Pre-Blessed Food
Below is a rough draft of the narrative script:
”Are you having trouble staying awake during your 9 to 5 job, like this insomniac owl? Do not worry! With just one sip of Hootbucks Coffee you will instantly be energized and you will stay awake FOREVER!!!”
