This scene is SOOO efficient and accomplishes so much. It’s a very efficient scene! I’ve tried to write it longer but it never packs the same kind of punch.
This scene was written VERY CAREFULLY and covers A LOT of ground in a short period of time.
Low-key biggest moment to me is when Stede stood up for himself and pulled the “you were gonna kill me and I forgave you instantly” card because a) it’s a card he has the right to play and Ed knows it, b) it shows Ed immediately that it wasn’t just Ed’s heart that was in danger but Stede’s too, and c) if Ed is playing quid pro quo, Stede really did swallow that original murder attempt with ease and grace and it shows Ed that maybe he can forgive Stede’s one (admittedly big) mistake of freaking out and leaving that one time.
Any time I try to write a longer version where Stede explains more about Mary, the kids, Doug, learning he’s in love with Ed, explaining the Chauncey of it all, etc etc etc it all kind of washes away. Just doesn’t pack the same punch as “you were gonna burn my face off, remember?! And I GOT OVER that pretty quick, didn’t I?!”
Ed is reminded that Stede showed him a kindness the last time he was hiding under a tapestry & that Stede has earned his right to ask for a mulligan. It’s some kind of dude code that Ed recognizes instantly and basically forgives him in that moment. They’re equals. And if Stede wouldnt have stood up for himself, Ed would’ve seen him as pathetic and used that as justification to push him away. But Stede’s not afraid of Ed. And he has his own self respect that is admirable. They’re starting off on more level ground now.
Alright 🥺 (S01E04 - Fun and Games)

I know the joke is like, haha, how did we all collectively decide that THIS GUY is the soft Dom of Blackbeard’s dreams?
Consider: All he does is give. He pays his crew wages, regardless of their plunder. He makes sure they have creative and recreational outlets. He sees Ed, whom he has just met, secretly brush the corner of some of his fabric against his face, and his reaction is, “Like that? You’ll love this!” and takes this complete stranger into his secret closet, lets him touch whatever he wants. Lets him wear his clothes. Brings him breakfast in “bed” the next morning. Agrees to take him to a party he himself doesn’t really want to go to. Lets him wear more of his clothes. Has a private breakfast spread for him what we can assume is every morning.
Consider: “On your feet! We’re having a day!” Ep7 is probably my favorite because imo it does more to further the romance than anything else outside of the moonlight scene. Our well-coiffed sunshine could have let Ed nap, but instead convinced him to do something new—which is what Ed wants; it’s what he’s wanted from the beginning. (Classic infuriating soft Dom behavior: knowing you better than you.) And Ed is rewarded with unearthing Stede’s petrified heart, realizing it isn’t a stone—more importantly, showing Stede it wasn’t a stone—and establishing and toasting their partnership. Alone. In Stede’s designed-for-flow candlelit quarters. Their faces…this far apart.
Sure, you say, that’s some real service top energy, but soft Dom?
Consider: “Good, because I kind of enjoyed it.” “Stand down, Ed!” “Get off my ship. Now.” “Unhand me or bleed.” He doesn’t do it a lot, but when Stede issues an order, it is followed. Maybe with grumbling or pouting (@ Ed, u precious babygirl) or insults, but no one really challenges him once he puts his back into it.
Stede knows finery, and he knows Ed is the finest thing he’s ever had. He knows you treat fine things gently, with love, but also that you put up hard boundaries to protect them.

There is something so incredibly fucking sweet about Ed mirroring Stede when it comes to showing him affection.
Not just the "You wear fine things well" moment, but in going to check on Stede after killing Ned the same way Stede checked on Ed in the tub, making breakfast with marmalade the same way Stede brought him breakfast after the lighthouse thing in Season 1, like.
Stede has been the only one to show Ed such kind love, such soft and sweet and considerate love. Season 1 Ed only knew how to get affection from Stede by taking a sword to the gut, but Season 2 Ed has been replaying all those moments in his head just the way lovesick Stede was, and now that Stede's back the only thing Ed knows how to do is to mirror what has been the most earth shattering love he's ever experienced right back, because he doesn't know how else to show someone he loves them. It's so fucking endearing, and so real, and just.
Makes me excited for Season 3, ya know?

I dunno, man, if you can't find joy in an indigenous man snapping a homophobe's neck and a Black woman murdering an entire room of colonizers, I don't know what to tell you.

Totally. I think it’s more about how he’s basically in rehab mode at that time and violence / passion / heartbreak have been so intertwined for Ed. He needs time to sort it out.
One thing that I absolutely love is that Ed is not, for one single second, jealous of Stede's newfound fame. It would have been so easy for the writers to use that as the point of tension between them, to have Ed struggle with Stede suddenly being famous and people being more interested in him than Blackbeard, but there's not a single iota of it to be found. That sort of jealousy is just not a thing that exists in the equation of their relationship.
Look at him here. Although he initially assumes that the group of admirers is looking for him, when they say that they're actually interested in Stede, Ed isn't put out by it at all. His first reaction is to look on with interest, then to genuinely smile/laugh as he watches these people fawn over Stede, and then finally to sincerely congratulate him in this adoring proud voice. This is a man who is so fucking chuffed for his boyfriend.
Even in the bar later on, he's gleefully and enthusiastically giving Stede all these tips that he's learned over the years, helping and supporting him in ways that he no doubt wishes someone would have done for him when he was in the first throes of pirate infamy. He's not upset that Stede is over there with admirers rather than hanging out with him - he's giving his advice, essentially going 'HAVE AT 'EM TIGER', and then watching him go with big proud doe-eyes. If anything, he's thrilled that everyone else has joined him in seeing how spectacular his boyfriend is.
And when the conflict does come, it's not jealousy that fuels it. Instead, it's all about Ed panicking that they're at different places in life, with Stede succeeding at piracy just at the point where Ed himself is truly done with it. In fact, I think it's even arguable that a part of it is that Ed doesn't want to have to ask Stede to give all this up for him (even though we all know Stede happily would). There's not a single whisper of Ed actually begrudging Stede any of this.
It would have been such low-hanging narrative fruit to have jealousy play a part here, and I sort of expected it because so many shows would do it, just because it's easy drama. But not the OFMD writers. They took one look at it and went 'nope, not in this relationship', and I want to kiss them all lovingly on the forehead for it. Yes, in many ways they are both very immature, and they don't know how to be in an adult relationship, but in this? This is something mature and grown up that they just inherently do without thinking. This is a relationship where they love each other, and support each other, and genuinely delight in each other's achievements. They love each other completely and utterly, with no space for petty interpersonal jealousy in that love. And that's why, in spite of all the messiness and issues that they are going to have to overcome, they are strong enough to make it through.

Yes and they don’t even need to like totally French kiss! They just need to like PRETEND French kiss (totally doable on camera) for like 5 seconds… no joke that is my one ask. I need it!
(Ok I sound like a junkie now send help)
It's like not like we're asking for too much.
Just please bring ofmd back and show us a scene where Ed tilts Stede’s chin up to kiss him, even though he's only like 7 cm taller.
Height differences is something that I am willing to die for.
Thank you for coming to my Ted talk.

Anyway, I wrote another little thing about some of the shit going on here. Some is a repetition of stuff I've posted here, but I try to break things down about why this is important. Just my little contribution, from our little site.

Fuck me there's some very deep depressing societal analysis to made of a situation where 'the gays' are encouraged to support a show that's mostly about straight white people and has just breezed through getting renewed for another season whilst the much more successful and fiercely diverse queer-centric show gets canned.
