i had a thought of "do people not know what AUs are anymore?" and then i remembered nobody explains fandom stuff to new people anymore so it is entirely plausible people genuinely don't know what AUs are and nobody has explained it to them, so for today's lucky 10,000:

"AU" stands for "Alternate Universe" or "Alternative Universe" (same difference) and is basically any thought scenario for a fandom that isn't canon and can't fit within the canon universe. If it takes place in the canon universe but something is notably different, that is typically what's known as a "Canon divergent AU," because it diverges from canon.

an AU can be absolutely anything. There's a couple of widespread pan-fandom au scenarios that often get thrown around, like coffee shop aus, genderbend aus, hanahaki aus (hanahaki is a whole thing in itself i'd recommend researching on your own), etc. One you might hear sometimes is "crossover AU" which is when you have characters from one fandom interacting with characters from another.

You can have as many aus as you want. They can be whatever you want and you can do whatever you want in them. It's a sandbox for you to play around in and explore how things would be different or how the characters would act in those circumstances or environments. Maybe they have different relationships with each other. Maybe they behave slightly differently. Or you can just say "Okay, [x] is true. How did they get here? How would things have to be different for this to occur?" which can also be fun.

If you are ever confused about why people ship something that seems completely out of the blue or doesn't make sense to you in the canon setting, there's a good chance they like it in an AU setting! Not everything everybody is interacting with is necessarily the canon! Not everybody wants things to exist in canon and just want to explore playing dolls in a different sandbox and that's okay. And their sandbox might look a lot different than yours, and that's also okay. You have the freedom to make your sandbox whatever you please. Do whatever you want forever. Get funky with it. AUs are fun.

Alright, so this update is WEIRD (link here)

I haven’t been updating for a billion reasons but one of them was my dissatisfaction with the chapters I had posted—SO!!!

If you have read this fic before, PLEASE start over! The first chapter is completely different and all the chapters have been edited!

For those who haven’t read my story:

A Mulder/Scully/Skinner fic where Skinner is turned into a vampire and has to rely heavily on the help of Mulder and Scully—who he is madly in love with!

Lots of blood/gore, Skinner Suffering™️, some questionable kinks, and judging by my notes for future chapters a loooooot of smut 😂

Okay okay okay art students Mulder and Scully, the two have been friends since they met at an art show a few years back and vibed with one another’s work. They sign up for a prestigious workshop that’s priceless for a portfolio but nearly impossible to get into—but they’re both lucky. Only 20 students make it in every year and less than half of them can make it through a single month. First day of class and their instructor walks in, tall, broad, and muscular, dripping with confidence and swagger that has the whole room gawking when sunlight spills through his thin, loose shirt to provide a provocative silhouette. His voice is boisterous, nearly barking, as he introduces himself.

Walter Skinner.

It’s apparent from his introduction that he’s passionate about art and takes it seriously. It’s more than a hobby or a livelihood, it’s his reason for breathing. Anyone unwilling to put the time in will fail his class—and they don’t give out refunds.

Fox and Dana can’t stop watching him as he walks around the room, graceful on his feet with a soft growl in his voice. He certainly knew how to get their attention. They almost didn’t hear when Skinner ordered the class to pull out their sketchbooks and scrambled to catch up with the rest of the group. They were going back to the basics and practicing figure drawing so he could see where everyone was at.

Dana and Fox nearly fell out of their seats when their instructor removed his shirt and perched on a stool.

The class had 20 minutes to impress him.

A useful thing to know about AO3 tags is that they're wrangled by humans. A human being will read your tag, understand what it means*, and then connect that tag in the backend system to other tags that mean the same thing (if there are any)

that's why, for example, the tags

and a million more versions are all searchable and filterable if you just tag one of them. A Tag Wrangler (the job title of a human volunteer who manages AO3 tags) has made sure that AO3 understands that those are all synonyms, so AO3 treats them that way.

When you're tagging your fic, or searching for a fic, or filtering a tag to find or remove works from the list you do not have to use every possible version of a tag. You just need to pick one - unless using more is a stylistic choice you're making, in which case have at it.

*or research what it means - which is why wranglers really appreciate it if you put (OC) behind the name of your original characters so that they don't have to scour every source they can find to see if it's a named background character in canon.
