Can we normalize disabled people experiencing human emotions?
So often ableds expect me to act like a perfect little inspirational angel, when in reality I’m a human with emotions like the rest of y’all.
I don’t want to have to smile after you tell me you’d kill yourself if you were in my situation.
I don’t want to grin and nod while you treat me like a child and pet my hair.
I don’t want to laugh it off when you tell me about your friend who had my condition and died.
I don’t want to generously share my deeply personal medical history with a stranger I just met on the street.
I want to cuss and call you out on your BS, not sit compliantly in my wheelchair like a sweet little angel.

i can’t stand “it’s not that deep” attitudes like even if it really really isn’t that deep just PLAY WITH ME. just fucking PLAY. have a meaningless but deep analytical conversation with me. just like think about shit for fun. does anyone else like to think about stuff for fun. it’s so lonely

I’m getting so fed up of the same few popular part-time wheelchair users on TikTok claiming that any attitude other than “I love my chair! Wheelchairs = Freedom!”is purely a symptom of internalised ableism.
Wheelchairs are tools, and for a lot of people they are far from perfect. I’m happy that these people can associate using their chairs with a reduction in symptoms and being able to stay out longer and do more, but it’s not always that simple for everyone.
My wheelchair is painful and exhausting to be in a way that wouldn’t be solved with a better, more expensive chair even if I had that option available. It causes me additional health problems (pressure sores and digestion problems spring to mind) and the places my large powerchair can go is also much more limited compared to an active manual chair (I know because I’ve used both).
And when I’m in my chair, I’m restricted to it in a way that these people simply aren’t. I’m literally strapped in to remain upright in a way that feels claustrophobic and definitely isn’t comfortable. I can’t transfer without a hoist, and given how few of those are available in public that means once I’m in my chair I’m essentially locked in – even just redistributing my weight is a whole bunch of effort.
And for a lot of people, even if they can use a lightweight active manual chair, it’s not all sunshine’s and rainbows. There’s trauma and pressure sores and pain and digestive problems and loads more that can all be associated with wheelchair use.
It’s not ableist for me to feel limited by my wheelchair when I literally am. I am happy when I go to the pool and can move without being restricted by my wheelchair or gravity and I often fantasise about levitating up out of my chair and leaving it behind. That’s exactly as ableist as someone with chronic pain in their legs fantasising about not having to walk places, but some parts of our community don’t seem to be able to see that.
I’m not saying wheelchairs are inherently bad (they’re just tools), or even that everyone in my exact situation would hate theirs. I’m just saying there’s no right way to feel about something that is so complex, and just because your experiences don’t fit the simple wheelchair-positive narrative that my TikTok algorithm is forcing on me, it doesn’t make you a bad wheelchair user.

Kind of crazy that half of Canada burning and over 30,000 people having to evacuate every year is like a normal routine now. It’s kind of like accepted here. “Well its fire season some of you will die, thousands will be homeless, let’s do this again next year.” The ancient old growth forests are important for all of earth! Pretty crazy how important Canada’s ancient boreal is for the entire world’s oxygen production. Yikes. Colonialism and its consequences. And who is the most affected? Indigenous people!

i think what's holding back the sabrina discourse is that choice feminists do not fundamentally believe in socialization or the choices you make not being in a vacuum.
choice feminists think they're the ones who are free because they believe criticism of pandering to the patriarchy is centering men itself. therefore the natural solution is making "any" choice you want and saying you don't do it for men.
essentially, if you ignore the patriarchy and pretend it's not real, it will go away, and if you point it out YOU are the misogynist because you are "creating" it.
they do not have a concept that they themselves are influenced by society to act in favor of the patriarchy. this logic is only used as an argument against feminism, they understand why it is ridiculous to try to solve other forms of bigotry by accusing people who point it out as people perpetuating it.
additionally, many see modesty as the sole patriarchal standard for women, despite this being historically inaccurate. in reality, it is a double-sided coin. they use porn, buy magazines, the main difference is that they own women privately. what makes it a "sin" is that she is sexually available publicly.
