THEORY:

Shelby is a mole in S3 (This is confirmed by the writers) but she wasn’t the whole time. That was the point of the sour patch scene. The sour patches were a matrix red pill blue pill reference. Her and Josh are both moles bc they were both offered the sour patches kids but Gretchen.

I think Shelby agrees bc she knows it will keep her on the island with Toni and the girls. She thinks she fucked up her relationship completely with Toni when they are in the bunker. She thinks there is no hope. I fully believe she agreed to be the mole to A) keep toni safe and B) Gretchen probably threatened to out her to her family. i fully believe she will double cross Gretchen but I also think that she will sacrifice herself in someway for Toni in that process. Probably not through dying but I think she will let herself get captured/punished/hurt by Gretchen in order to keep Toni or Martha safe.

Shelby and Toni won’t be together until they are out of the experiment bc of guilt Shelby has for being the new mole AND for the boat Shelby saw. Shelby will be moody and distantly taking care of Toni and Martha but not letting herself be with Toni. Shelby now feels she ruins her relationships (Becca and now Toni) and she’s gonna be very protective of Toni but still feel unworthy and therefore when Toni tries to forgive her she’s gonna reject it.
