While searching for #picturebooks, I stumbled upon a book called Little Bot and Sparrow. I found it interesting throughout my search that there were numerous amounts of picturebooks being promoted. This particular book Little Bot and Sparrow was years in the making and the author/ illustrator used Tumblr as a mode of finally sharing the release of his book as well as advertising giveaways as a promotional tool

PROMPT 6

Discover the diversity of Australia’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages.

This video could be used as a means of engaging the student in the history and language of different Indigenous nations. It provides not only the opportunity to engage but also to explore different Indigenous nations cultures, traditions and languages, as well as the opportunity to gain an understanding relating to the various/ copious Indigenous nations and communities across Australia.

Prompt 5

1. Nights and days passed by and still he ate no food. He had no strength now,    he was cold, transparent and hollow inside, the emptiness of his stomach was growling, until he died. Silence.

3.Three Level Guide – literal, interpreted and applied

Follow a Three level guide frontloading activity with the cover of the text, what do students see? what can they infer based on what they see? - means of activating prior knowledge and engaging the students in the text and concepts immediately.

Prompt 4

Whilst on placement I was able to observe and teach several Literacy Intervention sessions. These sessions involved students in years 7 through to 9 that were 1-2 years behind in literacy. This was a fantastic experience to witness and teach a group of students who were all at similar levels. These sessions involved reading F & P Levelled Literacy books and activities that accompanied these readings involved research activities, cause and effect activities (finding evidence directly from the text) etc. 

On placement I did not directly witness a bad literacy session, however in the past I have seen classes where students read as a class but have very limited discussions as to what was being read. I believe this is not very beneficial as it doesn’t give you the chance to truly understand how much each student actually comprehends what they are reading.

Prompt 3

My placement this year was at a secondary school. The sample above was finished after I completed my placement rounds and was highly researched. The purpose of the writing was to be informative as well as present an opinion. Unfortunately, there is no fluency across ideas and the individual facts are unorganised and presented in individual sentences rather than grouped (paragraphs). This student could benefit from additional help organising and planning their ideas so that their factual piece consists of a few fluent well organised paragraphs rather than multiple sentences that don’t effectively convey their intended message.

Prompt 2 

Creating a classroom display can make your classroom very engaging. The last chance I had to help construct a classroom display was when the class I working with was focussing on fairy tales. The display aimed to engage the students in fairy tales however more importantly if provided students with some of the key ideas and words that relate to fairy tales such as; prince, princes etc. this display later incorporated the work they had then completed in the class.

Prompt 1

Personally I find it difficult to remember some of the texts that were read to me throughout school. However, whilst on placements 2 years ago the class was being reading FIRE by Jackie French and Bruce Whatley. Admittedly this book was not around when I was younger as it is based off the Black Saturday bushfires, however whilst listening to this book being read and experiencing first-hand the wonderful illustrations and rhymes as well as the learning opportunities that are presented in this visually emotive book made me understand and appreciate the importance of illustrations in the reading process.
