We can begin with studying the first 600 words. Of course chucking is an effective way to memorize words readily. Here’s a list to translate into the language you desire to learn that Derek Roger suggested! :)

the concept of how sir arthur conan doyle was as a person always sends me into fits. imagine making the most famous literary character of all time but you hate the character so much you try to kill him off. but everyone is so horny for this asshole detective they make you bring him back. even your own mother gets mad when he’s dead because she likes him. raising your prices to ridiculous rates to avoid writing holmes stories backfired and now you’re rich. it’s absolutely a pain because it’s keeping you from your true passion which is spiritualism despite how one of your good friends harry houdini keeps telling you it’s bullshit. you consider your best novels to be historical ones but they’re well over shadowed by the nemesis of your own creation sherlock fucking holmes. some fake photographs from some kids convinced you faeries were real and you wrote a whole book about it. you started writing stories in medical school. and yes, also you are a doctor. after you’re dead, they erect a statue of sherlock holmes across the street from your birthplace, causing you to probably roll over one hundred eighty degrees in your grave and scream into your casket pillow.

small writing things i recommend

get a journal. write your random thoughts into it. it can provide inspiration later. 

go out. observe things. i play a game when i walk home from school sometimes, where i try describing the weather or a house or a person i pass by in my head. 

eavesdrop. what does a normal conversation sound like? are there common mannerisms related to talking that you can spot? stick them in your story. 

keep a dream log. it’s the only time your imagination is truly not limited whatsoever. much of it might be useless but you can find some hidden gems. 

read. anything and everything. fiction, non-fiction. historical, mythical. you might even learn something practical.

In highschool I wrote a story about a middle-generation of stellar travelers. Their parents were born on earth and left as children, and the middle generation will not live long enough to see their destination. They live their entire lives on the ship and I wrote about them trying to find their place in everything. They will never know blue skies and warm beaches and open fields with warm breezes. They’ll never know birdsong or crickets or frogs. They’ll never hear the rain on the roof of a dreary day. I never could find the right way to end the story. I wanted it to be a happy ending, but I didn’t know how to do it.

I realize now that it was a book about me dealing with depression before I even knew it. Looking back at how blatant the projecting was, it’s obvious now. It wasn’t then.

In the story, the middle-generation people are lost. They’re apathetic. They’re just a placeholder. The only job they have is to keep the ship running, have kids, and die. As the middle generation of people began becoming adults, suicide rates were skyrocketing. Crime and drug rates were jumping. This generation was completely apathetic because they felt that they had no use.

In the story, a small group of people in the middle-generation create the Weather Project. They turn the ship into a terrarium. They make magnificent gardens and take the DNA of animals they took with them and recreate them and they make this cold, metal spaceship that they have to live their entire lives on into a home. They take what little they have and they break it and rearrange it into something beautiful. They take this radical idea and turn the ship into a wonderful jungle of trees and birds and sunshine.

And I realize now how much it reflects my state of mind as I transitioned from a child into an adult while dealing with depression. You always hear “it gets better” and “when you’re older things will be easier” and I was so sick of waiting for it to get better. I was in the middle-generation stage. And I was sick of it. I was so sick of waiting.

When I was in highschool I didn’t know how to end the story. I didn’t know how to have a happy ending. I didn’t have the life experience then to finish the story in a meaningful way. I didn’t know how to make it better for these middle-generation characters.

But now that I’m older, I’m learning. That if you sit and wait for things to get better, it never will. You have to take your life and break it apart and rearrange it into something beautiful. You have to make the cold metal ship into the garden that you deserve. You have to make your own meaning. You have to plant your own garden.

You have to teach yourself that being happy is not a radical idea.

If you want to write as a career you’ll have to write on days you don’t want to. 

You’ll have to write when you aren’t motivated, when you aren’t in the mood, when writing isn’t any fun. Just because writing is something people can have fun doing, doesn’t mean it’s not a challenging and often tiresome career choice.

Just as an engineer or doctor or lawyer who chose to go into they practice because they enjoy it will have days where they wish they could be doing anything but their job, so do writers who write for a living.

But you don’t have to write for a living to be a writer or to finish and publish stories.

And if you’re not trying to write for a living, you don’t… have to write… like, at all. If you aren’t enjoying your hobbies, you don’t have to make yourself do them.

It’s okay to have fun creating characters and moodboards and role playing and making up stories in your head without ever writing them down.

It’s okay to start a bunch of stories and never finish them.

It’s okay to approach the hobby of writing and storytelling in whatever way makes you happy.

It’s also okay to recognize that you don’t enjoy certain parts of writing, and then push yourself through those parts because you want to finish your book! 

Most writers don’t love or find easy every aspect of the writing process. You’re no less a writer just because you really hate throwing together a rough draft but love doing revisions, or because you have fun slapping down the rough draft but every stage you move toward proofreading you’re annoyed with the story more, or because you like creating a wonderful, publishable novel but can’t bring yourself to so much as think about the actual publishing process.

If you write for long enough, writing will be hard at times, but you’re no less a writer just because it’s hard for you!
