“I once told Han that it was tiresome watching him do the right thing only after he’d exhausted every alternative. But sooner or later, he’d get there”
[Leia, TLJ Novelization, pg 15]
Like father, like son?
It was tiresome
watching him do the right thing
only after he’d exhausted every alternative.
But sooner or later, he’d get there

Martyr · noun [ mar·tyr \ ˈmär-tər ]: a person who suffers greatly or dies rather than give up his or her religion or principles
Fives was a silent martyr. There were no flags or words of protest screamed out in the streets of Coruscant following his death. No monument erected, no solemn words from the Chancellor, no worldly holiday to celebrate his brave sacrifice. His armored body collapsing down to the floor was louder than the impact it caused on most people around him, and he died in forgetfulness and unimportant like any other clone trooper.
Bred to fight and die, like another cog in a machine far more important than they could possibly aspire to be.
Fives’ death touched only a few indeed. Anakin didn’t sleep that night. Fives was one of the most loyal soldiers in the 501, his battalion. His death, following his friend Tup’s could mean that any clone that developed their same illness could die. But there were other concerns in the general’s mind - his secret marriage, the war, the soft whisper in his mind, urging him into a darker place of his heart.
Fox was never the same after he pulled his blaster trigger in that warehouse. His weapon - somehow set to kill rather than stun - had taken a brother’s life. Self-defense or not, witnesses or not, he was undeniably a dar’manda, a brother-killer, an outsider to his other vode. Fox could notice his brother’s stare, even his own men’s, following Fives’ death. He traded the usuall loud booth he’d share with his battalion at the 79’s every Saturday for the farthest end of the counter where he could get the shots of kashyykian vodka to coming every early Tuesday. The only moment Fox had peace of mind since Fives’ death was when order 66 kicked in, wiping his regrets along with any trace of his original personality.
Rex was the one to be truly hit by the ripples of Fives’ words and his sacrifice like a brutal tide washing over him. His words kept playing inside his head non-stop, his nail constantly clawing at his forehead or to the back of his head to the point of bleeding, trying to rip out the damn chip that had cost his friend’s life. Fives’ death made Rex demand Kix to remove his chip to the point of holding the medic at gunpoint for a moment before he complied, it made Rex try and convince Cody to leave the army, tarnishing their friendship for good. It made him convince Gregor to get them an unidentified ship and fill his backpack with his few personal items (Fives’ right hand guard retrieved from Kamino among them) and hyperdrive as far as he could from the Republic’s reach. The Republic he had served and loved all his life.
Fives died in a silent sacrifice, a quiet martyr in a galaxy that never allowed him or his brother’s to speak up. But his voice screamed in Rex’s, Wolffe and Geggor’s voices as they fought the Empire. It sang in Cut’s voice when he’d put his children to bed promising they would be safe even with the empire’s shadow looming over them. It whispered in Kix’s prayers for his few surviving friends to be safe. Every vode that escaped their sacrifices and decommissionings had Fives’ voice melded in their own. He’s no longer silent now.

Little Baby Leia: Dad, can you tell me about my birth mom?
*two hours later*
Bail: …and then she just pulled out a gun out of her arm sling and shot the bounty hunter. Okay time for bed. Maybe tomorrow I’ll tell you about the time she punched out a senator in front of the police, Palpatine, and Mon Mothma.
