Let me show you something really cool I’ve recently found in the Japanese edition of the Purple Haze Feedback.

*JOJO PURPLE HAZE FEEDBACK SPOILERS AHEAD*

So, in the climax of the last chapter when Giorno and Fugo have that conversation in the restaurant and, well, make half of a step towards each other (which is another cool concept I wanna write about later), Giorno says smth like this:

"We carry the legacy of those who are gone - it is a responsibility we must uphold. Rather than behaving like a god and destroying everything we dislike, we must overcome hardships, guided by even the faintest glimmer, like the one from the stars."

Now let’s take a look at the Japanese text. I framed these Giorno's words in blue. There are two specific places, marked with red, where you can see some additional symbols near the respective kanji (hieroglyphs) for 'a god' and 'a star':

Those tiny symbols are the kana (alphabet) letters. And the function of this letters is to tell us how to read those kanji. This alphabetic reading hint is called ‘furigana’ and is commonly used as a helping tool in situations, when reading kanji correctly can be difficult. For example, in textbooks, in children books, in some manga, near names, near uncommon rare kanji etc. There is a nice example right in the next sentence, marked by yellow - it is a complicated kanji for 'tenohira' - 'a palm of a hand'; usually it is written with simpler kanjis, so in this case furigana is here to help.

So, in Giorno’s phrase "Rather than behaving like a god and destroying everything we dislike, we must overcome hardships, guided by even the faintest light, like the one from the stars" there are:

But SOMETIMES in fiction texts and manga lines furigana can be used to add an uncommon, unusual, non-dictionary reading for the kanji-word, becoming a kind of ... metaphoric figure? idk. It results in giving an addditional meaning to the word, something like an implication. Imagine reading some romance where smb is talking about their friend, but you see the tiny letters ‘lover’ above the word ‘friend’ or above that friend’s name, that’s it))) This particular way of applying furigana is called 'gikun', and here is a better explanation for this trope))

SO.

1) the furigana applied to the word 'kami' ('god'), which hints to read it as 'dio';

2) the furigana applied to the word 'hoshi', which hints to read it not as 'hoshi' but (!) in English(!) as 'star' ('suta-').

This untranslatable thing works fine for the Japanese readers, but is lost in English, I guess. I wonder how Italian readers react to this phrase in Italian edition of PHF, as, I suppose, 'Dio' is present there in his full glory? XD
