FOUND FOOTAGE/MOCKUMENTARY MODERN DAY HORROR: this is a list featuring some of my favorite horror movies from 2010-2019 that fall under the category of found footage/mockumentary films. Some are left behind by hapless crews, others are pieced together by documentarians, and all seek to frighten you with footage presented as raw.
Digging Up the Marrow (2014): a horror filmmaker travels to meet a man who claims that monsters are real and that he knows where to find them, but as filming progresses the director realizes his subject is withholding secrets even more strange than the existence of fabled creatures.
The Taking of Deborah Logan (2014): a film crew set out to document the life and tribulations of an elderly woman recently diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, but after an escalation of unnerving incidents they discover that a figure from the past may be the cause of her suffering.
The Borderlands (2013): three men are sent by the Vatican to investigate reports of supernatural occurrences at a rural church, only to find themselves capturing a series of disturbing events before unearthing a horrifying, unfathomable truth.
The Sacrament (2013): when a documentary team visits an isolated but utopic religious community helmed by a charismatic man known as “Father” they soon realize that not all is what it seems and that the worshipped leader’s vision of paradise comes at a terrible price.
La Boca del León (2013): an exorcism conducted via FaceTime goes awry when the possessed man is unable to continue and his young daughter must assist the priest in the ritual. This one is actually a short film and can be watched for free.
Creep (2014): a freelance videographer is hired by a dying eccentric to chronicle his final months as a tribute to his unborn son, but the man’s alarmingly-bizarre behavior leads the filmer to question his client’s motives.
As Above, So Below (2014): explorers and their guides journey deep into the Paris Catacombs and are forced to face a sect of female cultists, claustrophobic tunnels comprised of water and human bone, and hellish, gruesome visions that reflect their most private fears.
V/H/S (2012): a ne'er-do-well group discovers a strange series of tapes depicting a variety of terrors, including a couple followed by a seemingly-unshakable young woman, a slaughterous glitching entity, and four friends who undergo an unsettling Halloween night.
Mention goes to V/H/S/2 (2013), The Bay (2012), Grave Encounters (2011), The Tunnel (2011), The Houses October Built (2014), and Hell House LLC (2015).

“An ounce of bargaining, a pinch of trickery, a soupcon of intimidation, et voila! A perfect recipe for a towering reputation without ever having to spill one drop of blood. Ever try and get bloodstains out of a silk shirt? Nightmare!” Robert De Niro in Stardust (2007) dir. Matthew Vaugh
