Now that artfight is over, I've finally been working on this again! Progress will still be slow as always, but here's where the foyer's at now! Already so much better than the last lazy mockup I posted. :)
I still need to make the wallpaper background seamless, which probably will take some figuring out now that I don't have access to Illustrator anymore (can clip studio do the same thing?). I also need to find a different floor or make a seamless floor pattern so I can better fit it to the perspective and extend it into the other rooms. And figure out if I want to remove or extend the wainscoting on the stairs. Then it's on to the furniture!

It's nowhere close to being finished, but I've been working on this sort of "sketch" for what I want the foyer to look like. It still needs a lot of editing to make everything look not terrible, and some of these images are only placeholders for now while I continue to try to find better ones.
From the foyer, you'll be able to go left to the sitting room, right to the dining room, forward to the hallway, or upstairs. There will also be the guestbook and maybe a couple other interactive objects if I can think of some more.
Not sure yet if I'll keep the little cat mascot (though she is cute) because I hadn't planned on including any NPC-like/dialogue aspect initially. But I do need a way to introduce/explain the activities that will come later on, so I'm thinking it's either this, leaving little paper notes around for the player to find, or having text at the bottom of the screen similar to this but without the cat and speech bubble. I'll have to do some thinking on what I want the gameplay and general vibes to be like.
Which option do you think is best?

Not much progress to report yet unfortunately - I've been taking some time to work on some other projects lately and I've felt a little bit stuck when it comes to Mossy Manor. I've been having a really hard time finding a good staircase picture from the foyer that is in 1 point perspective and isn't cut off at all, but I did find a 3d model of a staircase that is almost perfectly what I was imagining. However, it doesn't have any texture so it looks like I'll have to learn how to use some 3d modeling software. If I can get a decent looking wood texture with decent lighting, I can use that one, otherwise I'll have to just use another photo I found that is in a slightly weird perspective.
One thing I have made progress on for Mossy Manor is figuring out a little bit of a floor plan, just to get a rough idea of what rooms there will be and how they'll connect each other. The second floor is still pretty up in the air, but here's what I have so far for the first floor:

(Let's just hope all those angles and towers and bay windows don't turn out to be super hard to collage, but maybe that's another area that 3d modeling can come in handy if I get good enough at it, just to do the walls/general dimensions of the rooms?)

Ok, I think(?) I may have fixed this. It seems like the problem was maybe being caused by the <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1" /> tag, which is weird because it was my understanding that this was supposed to help mobile compatibility. Hopefully everything should work now, but we'll see once I update everything!

So. Apparently it looks like this on mobile. 🤔 Sorry about this, I'll try to figure out what's happening! But it is a good example - if anyone ever encounters anything like this, or any other bugs or device compatibility issues, please let me know so I can try to fix it!

Update: The about page is now up! Click through the tabs in the notebook to learn about the site, check the update log, or browse through some resources and links that have helped me so far while learning to make my own website.
Next, I'll be working on the first actual room in Mossy Manor. Stay tuned!

Quick update since it's been a while!
The about page is close to being posted - all I need to do yet is: put together a list of resources for the credits page, figure out how to use javascript to make the tabs work, and find or make a back button icon to take you back to the home page.
Since my last post, I've finished: the background collage for the about page (I put off adding shadows for a long time but it wasn't as bad as I thought), the actual page collages for the three pages (about, update log, and credits/resources), and putting together the code for the whole page (almost everything has to be absolutely positioned with precise percentages so they stay where they're supposed to be even if the window is resized - so it can take a while getting everything just right) minus the javascript and the html for the rest of the credits page yet to be compiled.
I also went back and optimized all the images from the home page, since I noticed it's a little slow to load, and also exported and optimized the images for the about page. (Hopefully putting them in webp will make them a lot smaller than pngs would be with not too much quality lost? We'll see.)
After I get the about page up, then I can start working on the foyer/entrance, so stay tuned!

Had a few setbacks but I'm still working on this bit by bit! The about page is almost done being designed - it maybe just needs some minor tweaking yet. But then it's on to figuring out how to code it with functioning tabs and everything (while knowing absolutely 0 javascript at this point) so that will take some time as well.

The home page is now up! Nothing to link to from it yet, but it's still a good start. Currently working on the about page, so hopefully that'll be done soon as well!

Slowly trying to work out the logo. Not 100% there yet but in other news I did figure out the kind of base HTML & CSS and that all seems to be working ok so far, so as soon as I finish this and the rest of the welcome page I can finally put something up on the site!

Haven't been able to work on this as much this month, but still making some slow progress - I tried out a couple different options for siding and floors/stairs, but I think I'm leaning toward the brick one on the right. I also made a perspective grid as a guide and tried to warp everything to fit the perspective to make it look a bit more realistic.

Current progress on the welcome page - currently working on the siding and steps, then I still need to find a porch floor and finalize the logo on the sign, but otherwise I think it's coming along ok!

Current status of the welcome page - still need to collage together a little porch/front of house and finish the sign & finalize the logo. The sign will have a little intro/welcome message, and maybe a couple links, and then you'll click on the door to enter the main house. :)

Low res preview of the dress up game I'm working on! It will be fairy themed, only one skin tone for now until I can figure out the code and get it working, but then I plan to add more as well as additional dresses and wings. I also still need to design the menu/controls.

intro
Hello!
This is a sideblog for my neocities site, mossymanor. It will likely be a little while before I can get the site itself up and running as I'm going to be learning to code almost completely from scratch. So, in the meantime I thought I'd use this as a space to post some updates on my progress from time to time!
My plan for Mossy Manor is to be a little homage to the kind of point and click games I loved as a kid, as well as a place for me to just be creative and share my ideas. Mossy Manor will eventually consist of multiple different pages/"rooms," each with graphics I'll collage together, and hopefully with lots of interactive elements in each room. For example, a dressing room that hosts a dress up game, or a music room where you can click on various instruments to hear their sounds.
Just finished: Making the about page!
Currently working on: Putting together the background collage for the foyer. Also, making custom icons & cursors (eventually).
Up next: Figuring out how to make a guestbook?
Eventually: Testing and putting together the code for the first dress up game!
