Once again I hate to promo my kofi/commissions , but I had to spend 200 USD on medication today, and with how work/my health has been I don't think I'll have enough money my next paycheck to be able to make rent -

hey.
I wanted to give an update about things now that some time has passed and my head's a little clearer.
We had to let Casper go on the 13th and the best I can say is that she went without pain. I'm still not 100% and not really in the headspace for a whole lot of writing. But I may drop in occasionally. I do miss you all, and appreciate your patience.
I'm not sure when I'll be back or if that's something I can really guarantee. But if the energy is there and you guys don't mind, I'll reach out here and there.

PSA: I will be going on hiatus for a while.
Casper, our youngest, is very ill and most signs are pointing towards it being diabetes, but she has too much glucose in her system and we don't know yet if it can be reversed. We're getting more tests done today and, for better or worse, have a clearer understanding of where things stand.
I may be on discord, I may not. I'm really sorry that I haven't been active and I may be less so in the future but... she's our baby. And I want to focus on her, Frosty, and my spouse Circe.

Looking at this, I'm reminded that technically no one is safe from an impromptu visit from the octatrio. Sure, it might be a long and dangerous journey by sea, but they can get just about anywhere if they have reason to. ✨️

Now that the Octa dreams have hit NA, I thought about revisiting my headcanons for Azul's dream since it does differ from the in-game canon.
My Azul's dream starts out a little similar to the canon, but instead of a sports anime protag his imaginings of getting revenge on certain people mix with Ursula's memories of wielding the trident, so Silver and co have to get through a maelstrom that's dragging things up from the seabed once they start introducing the cognitive dissonance of reality vs the dream. But the merfolk seen are going about their business mostly as usual, but there's a sense of unease/fear that occasionally has them looking over their shoulder if approached.
The city, funnily enough, is mostly unharmed at that particular moment, but when the boss battle is initiated the surrounding environment looks like it was picked up and tossed around by a hurricane.
Overall the dream itself is less a wish fulfillment of wanting to be universally admired/celebrated and more finally getting that pound of flesh from that list he keeps in the back of his noggin.

Had a realization while at work today. It wasn't a bad one necessarily, just a "oh, that makes sense" kinda thing.
There's a couple of things that don't particularly interest me when it comes to writing/rp and one of them is really heavy drug use, whether it's consensual or not. I've never done it myself, but I grew up watching people close to me do it and saw the consequences play out over the years. Seeing it in writing/fiction doesn't really offend me or anything, people can write whatever they want and explore willy-nilly, but there's no fascination in it for me personally.
Part of me is a little glad when I see writers/artists get things wrong about it, because hopefully they haven't had to experience it for themselves. I sincerely hope they never do. And the times when I see it "done right" or a little too accurately - that's also nice in a way. I see you. You did good there. Whatever it was that brought you close to it, I hope you're okay.
Things like that, y'know?

Barely had she heard Azul call her name, and even then it wasn’t quite enough. The fairy had been entranced by the jellyfish, looking at the colors, the slow movements. . .it was absolutely mesmerizing. Never before had she seen creatures like this so close, and it made her think of something, but not quite.
Almost like living flower petals in the wind.
Slow, elegant, and absolutely beautiful. That was the closest description she could get to them. Nothing else on land could match them, in her opinion. And everything else in the air usually went fast or in bouncy pattern. Who knew the sea could be so pretty? It wasn’t that scary when she could enjoy things like this.
Only when she felt a hand on her shoulder did she finally turn around and look to Azul. A blink, then realization as she smiles. “Hey! Yer all finished up?” A gentle flutter to her feet from her sitting position and she nods encouragingly. “I’m ready ta go too.”
It’s best she not look back at the jellyfish as hey leave, lest she get distracted again. What power did those magical creatures have to simply entrance someone?
"Naira?" He called again, taking care where he stepped lest the damp sand drag him down into an embarrassing sprawl. It had happened before, and he wasn’t keen on repeating the experience. But the tinker fairy seemed to not have heard him yet, so he gingerly picked his way closer just in case the breeze had carried his voice away. "Naira."
What was it that had stolen her focus? Lifting his head Azul cast about for a clue, only to freeze when his gaze landed on the water ahead. The dark blue waves were peppered with spots of color moving under the surface, occasionally lighting up with a gentle glow that he knew from experience would be equally captivating when viewed within the sea itself.
A jellyfish shoal was moving through, it seemed. A perfectly normal thing except -
Understanding dawned and Azul's expression softened a little, the corners of his mouth tugging up into a faint smile. Of course. She may have never seen it before, let alone known that jellyfish existed. From her perspective it was something entirely new, so naturally it would snare her attention.
It was cute, honestly. Endearing even.
"Naira~" Raising his voice enough to be heard over the waves, he set a gentle hand on her shoulder and gave it a light squeeze, amused when she jumped and turned around.
"Pretty, aren't they?" He nodded towards the shoal, which had thickened to a dense forest of slowly bobbing colors. "I can tell you about them as we walk, if you'd like." While he couldn't identify the breed at this distance, their idle flash of colors did lend a clue.
"Shall we? It wouldn't do to be late." Offering her his arm, Azul smiled, content for the moment. All in all, one might easily count this as a good day - and potentially a good night as well.

Perhaps he should have warned Jade's guests before they left the school.
...no, it's best for them to find out on their own. It'll be a valuable learning experience. He can hear all about it when they finally come back. If they come back at all.

@cainscholar said: Take him back ( he means Jade )

He pauses, feigning pleasant surprise as he brings his teacup up to his mouth for a gentle sip. It serves another purpose in hiding the beginnings of a ravenous mischievous smile about to curve his mouth, at least for a moment. Setting the cup back down Azul tilts his head to the side, studying Leona thoughtfully.
"I had hoped to do business with you again, but I must admit that I never quite pictured it like this." Leona may be a prince and a lovely study in holding his cards close to his chest, but it seemed that something was fraying at the seams here. He wanted to pick at it, unravel the threads until a weak spot was exposed and then dig his claws in until there was no chance of his prey fighting back.
All in good time. It wouldn't do to be hasty. Not with Leona's already tenacious nature.
"Jade is quite the marvel, isn't he? I suppose you're not used to someone of his talent offering it so freely. I understand." Leaning forward to rest his elbows on his desk, Azul perches his chin on folded hands as he regards his fellow housewarden with mirth twinkling faintly in deep blue eyes.
Jade was, of course, his own person and would go along with wanted whims he desired satisfying at any given moment -- but if Leona were offering, then he'd be a fool not to examine the prospect.
"Is that what you desire, Kingscholar? Suppose it would be an achievable wish, if you wanted to make a deal. Shall we discuss the subject of payment then, for your precious silence~?"

Night Raven Asylum AU
Night Raven Sanatorium (later renamed to Asylum in an attempt to make it sound more palatable and to divorce itself from an unfortunate history) was founded three centuries ago and is now run under strict lock and key by Chief Director Dire Crowley. The previous Director left their position somewhat abruptly, and few if any of the current staff know the actual details of what happened. On the surface Night Raven is a care facility for the mentally unwell, recently renovated and improved to care for its patients while providing security for its employees.
The reality is less tasteful. True, the women and men's ward have been renovated to tale care of health concerns, but the deeper blocks still boast evidence of the sanatorium's heyday. Because the area is subject to flooding in the winter, its not uncommon for the facilities to lose power and rely on backup generators - hence the continued reliance on latch and key locks and other physical restraints to keep unruly patients in line.
Orderlies and guards must pass a stringent background check before on boarding, but it's not uncommon for them to be former officers or ex-military, or even former prisoners themselves. Nurses and doctors must pass no less than three rounds of checks in order to be hired, and all staff is held to a "one strike" rule. Past that, their employment is immediately terminated and all equipment is confiscated. (And, if one believes some stories, those people find their way into a cell and are unable to get out)
Patients vary in age, race, and gender but most on the upper levels are individuals suffering from mild to severe forms of mental illness that prevents them from "fitting in" with an "acceptable" society. Some have been dropped off by relatives, others were deliberately left there to be forgotten about, and others were taken off the street and had no place to go otherwise.
The underground blocks D and E boast the tightest security, and for good reason. These blocks are where the most dangerous patients go - a mix of genuinely ill individuals and criminals who have records deemed too heinous for parole or a chance at anywhere but death row.
It's said, very low and very quiet, that if a provence does not permit the death penalty by law then they can make a "generous donation" to Night Raven Asylum and have the problem silently taken off their hands in return. Or so the rumor goes.
The asylum schedule for above ground blocks goes as follows:
6:00 am: lights on and morning medication is administered. first head count of the day is done.
7:00 am: breakfast and second head count is done.
8:00 am: light exercise or therapy as ordered
9:00 am: day room hour. patients who behave and cooperate well may visit the day room and read or play simple games. the single television may be used, but is strictly monitored.
10:00 am to 11:00 am: classes for applicable patients
12:00 pm: lunch and afternoon medication, third head count of the day.
1:00 pm to 3:00 pm: light exercise or therapy as ordered.
4:00 pm to 5:00 pm: movie hour, if applicable and patients behave. if not, patients with full or partial mobility may walk in the garden and quad under orderly supervision.
6:00 pm to 7:00 pm: shower time. female patients go first, then male. all patients are to be in their assigned cells and a head count done before the next group goes in to the communal showers. no less than fifteen orderlies are to be in attendance and on watch during each phase, unless otherwise attending a patient.
8:00 pm: dinner time, fourth headcount is done.
9:00 pm: evening medication if needed, otherwise patients are to return to/be escorted to their cells for bedtime without exception. a head count is to be done afterwards.
10:00 pm: lights out. last headcount of the day is done before day shift ends and night shift takes over.
Blocks D and E are under constant supervision by at least two armed guards at all times. A third will be assigned if needed, with orders to "take down" a patient if they cannot be contained and returned to their cell by usual means. Patients in these blocks are not taken from their cells unless for treatment or for shower time, and they are to be sedated for the duration of the latter. Meal times are on a similar schedule to the cells above ground, but patients of D and E are not permitted contact with patients in upper blocks.
Guards are not to respond to anything said to them by a patient unless it falls within the range of simple "yes or no" inquiries such as "is treatment scheduled today". No member of staff is to share any personal information about themselves with any patient, for any reason.
Every guard will receive a baton, a taser, set of handcuffs, a keycard, set of physical keys to be pinned on the inside of their uniform to prevent theft in case of power failure, short range radios for communication across levels, and a kit of tranquilizers for emergencies.
Meals for patients in blocks D and E are administered by nurses and orderlies, along with any prescribed medications.
Patients within these blocks are often straight jacketed for their safety and staff's, but more physically violent individuals can still be chained or shackled to the wall and floor despite the Chief Director's many assurances that "outdated methods such as those have been done away with".
I will add that there are no cameras beyond a certain point in blocks D and E. The ones seen past the last security door are fakes. But it's so dark down there that it was judged a waste of funds to install more at the time, so only the first 2-3 cells past the door are actually being recorded.
Up above however, there's three cameras to every cell in the women's ward and two to every cell in the men's ward. The cafeteria, therapy rooms, day room, and other facilities all have at least two cameras. Exceptions are the bathrooms, but since orderlies are supposed to accompany patients to do their business it's generally believed no one will try anything (but sometimes they do).
Additional notes:
Originally the asylum au was originally gonna be a lot spookier/unsettling. There being rumors of ghosts/spirits that can be heard wandering the halls at certain hours in the above ground blocks. heavy footsteps with no visible source, key rings and lanyards being tugged on out of the blue. Echoes of voices and conversations between 11pm and 2am, particularly around the open halls.
Not only that but also some of the staff experiencing something "flickering" in the corner of their vision, only to turn around and there be nothing there. The feeling of being watched and followed, which makes the new orderlies jumpy. Some have even reported hallucinations where they've seen hallways and rooms grow patches of fibrous flesh and pulsating tissue that looked like open sores and infected wounds, or glimpsed a space completely overtaken by this phenomenon. doors being replaced by twisted barriers of hardened gristle and splintered bone.
And then everything goes back to normal. it's just sleep deprivation, they tell themselves. Long hours on shift, constant exposure to the unwell. not enough recharge time.
But the patients know. Even the ones in the upper blocks, they know. They've all seen it, at one point or another. Some of them, especially down in blocks D and E, may occasionally ask "Do you remember going home?" or "When was the last time you recall seeing the outside?" Loaded questions like that. Sometimes it gets into people's heads, which can lead to something unfortunate.
Sometimes Idia's hair looks like it's on fire but he's not in pain. One of Jade's eyes glows in the dark and it follows you no matter where you go. Jamil's whispers can be heard even up above, gently coaxing, always so very gentle.
The asylum never being quite what people expect/want it to be and you're more or less trapped the moment you cross the threshold for the third time as an official member~
