Anonymous asked: Is it weird for an otherkin to identify as partially human, and feel okay about functioning in the world as human even though they identify spiritually, as, say, a wolf? Does the wanting to function in the world as human make them not really otherkin? I mean, I'm not going to invalidate anyone's identity based on your answer, what I want to know is if I can identify as otherkin whilst feeling partially human and functioning as a human would. Well, for the most part, anyway.
Tumblr media
Anonymous,
People who identify as wolves or other animals call themselves “therianthropes.” That word comes from the Greek word “thērion“ beast, wild animal, plus the word ”anthrōpos” man, human of any gender. When the word was coined in 1885, it meant a creature that was a combination of animal and human. People who identify as animals adopted it for themselves. (Source: the Otherkin Lexicon.)
Many therianthropes identify as animal and human. After all, they have human bodies, live human lives. Even if they consider themselves to have a wolf-like mind, they still think a lot of distinctively human thoughts, about mathematics and machinery and so on.
Some therianthropes talk about having both a human self, and an animal self. They balance the needs of both. As their human side gets to know their animal side, they develop better self-understanding and self-control, and less conflict with the animal side, as Razza Wolf wrote in “Losing faith, gaining acceptance.” In “Being Were and Awere: Balance,” Justin offered some advice on how to do this. In “Fluidity and fragmentation,” Sonne Spiritwind agrees that mental shifting is a part of this maturation process. Ketrino wrote in “Balance” about getting a yin yang tattoo, saying that this is like the balance between wolf and human. I highly recommend that you read that one, anonymous.
You’re not alone, anonymous. Many therianthropes feel like they are both human and animal.
Otherkin want to function in the world as human. That doesn’t invalidate their identity at all. We all want to live happy lives, and living in the human world is our only option for doing that. Some otherkin and therianthropes wish that they could live as a different creature, in a different environment, but nobody gets to do that.
Anonymous, your feeling that you are both human and animal, and wishing to function in the world as human, is typical of therianthropes.
The anonymously run “Otherkin Questions” blog is meant to be an information desk for the otherkin community. Ask us questions about otherkin, and we’ll look up answers.

in general I think this website has a serious problem about wanting to feel smugly superior about Literally Everything without spending even five seconds thinking about it first

about the phytanthrope survey. Is it open to people who are questioning whether the label applies to them?
Anyone who identifies as plantkin or a phytanthrope, and anyone feels that they identify as a plant, are welcome to fill out the survey. If you feel that the survey's focus applies to you, you're welcome to fill it out.

The Phytanthrope Community Survey is collecting data on phytanthropes’ experiences and understandings of themselves and their community. The survey asks questions about participants’ plant-related kintypes, how they personally think of the definition of the word phytanthrope, and about emotions such as dysphoria. This survey takes about 10 minutes, depending on how much you put in write-in questions. This survey is open to anyone identifies with the label “phytanthrope” or other synonyms with that word. Your body MUST be age 18 or older to participate in this survey. One response per physical body, please.
>>> SURVEY LINK <<<
This survey will close August 1st, 2025. We will collect data from the survey, which we will publish online afterwards, use for research purposes may be presented as part of a panel for an online convention (Othercon 2025). Any identifying information that participants submit will be made anonymous or removed entirely. This survey is part of a series of surveys by House of Chimeras (@liongoatsnake), Orion Scribner (@frameacloud), and Page Shepard (@who-is-page). If you’re interested in this project, please join our mailing list to get notifications of updates, additional surveys, and other events!

RRRAAAAAGHH !! THE BOARDERRRR !!!!! ONE OF US !!!
I've taken up Skateboarding again. Its been like 15 years?
In that time I've gotten fatter (beloved), Smashed my vertebrae (not beloved), and gotten top surgery (hurray!). So understandably I need to re-learn some shit. Mainly balance.
Anyway, I've been working on creature coding my skating.
Ears on the helmet. Paws on the board. Wearing my tail while skating. Creature stickers EVERYWHERE.
Im having a lot of fun with it.
And surprisingly (not) my therapist was right. Exercise DOES make you feel more in tune with your body. Especially when that exercise brings joy!
Like, no shit Quads are trending with Therians. Its an exercise that brings joy and is HEAVILY creature coded.

Spring, 2025: Achievements, Goals, Community Happenings
[Cross-posted from my Patreon]
It's been a while since we updated our Patreon, but we're not dead (yet)! Life's been a whirlwind of changes as we settle into a new job and try to wrangle affording the last two college classes we need to complete our second Bachelor's, but we wanted to once again take a moment to reorient ourselves and talk about what we've been doing and we're we've been going.
Achievements. 💡
We (alongside our partner Orion Scribner and our friends Abraxas) were first-time vendors at the Tampa Zine Fest, selling printed copies of A Wolf in Man's Clothing, Alterhuman Horoscopes, and updated versions of the Daily Dragonsbane #1 and #2. It was a smashing success and we sold out of all the copies of A Wolf in Man's Clothing that we had brought with us!
The second Centaurus Festival happened this March! While peak attendance was unable to be measured due to re-using last year's server, we had over 193 registrations for the event and a total of approximately 200 server members. There were 16 panels in total and the convention raised $111.70 for the spotlight nonprofit, the Internet Archive. If you weren’t able to make it to the convention this year, don’t worry; you can find the 2025 panels on our YouTube! Much the same as last year, this convention would not have been possible without our amazing staff team. (Important note: the website is currently down for Firefox users; I'm working with our web provider to help get the errors worked out!)
Goals. ✒️
We took a social media hiatus with Orion this past May and are hoping to continue it strong into June. It was great to step away from the doom-scrolling that social media can inspire in us, especially given how much of it centers around the current political climate. We've almost entirely moved to Dreamwidth for the time being, although our daily posts are access-locked.
We signed up for the Hot Wet Queer Summer Jam, a writing-centered jam where the only requirements are that the submissions are "wet" and "hot," in whatever way you want to take those prompts. The jam runs from June 1st to August 31st, and we're hoping to write some swampy monster stories set in our home state of Florida.
Community Happenings 📬
The newest alterhuman convention, HowlCon, has officially opened up its Artist and Panelist applications! Attendees, keep your eyes peeled for registration to open up this July. Convention dates will run from September 19 - 21, 2025.
The oldest alterhuman convention, OtherCon, is open for Artist and Panelist registrations-- see more details here. Registrations close June 1st, so hurry! OtherCon is scheduled for August 8 - 10, 2025.
Nonhuman Notions, a quarterly newsletter for nonhumans and by nonhumans, was recently founded by Gillman and a team of other talented folks. They're currently open for submissions and, if you'd like to get in touch with them, their email is [email protected]. More information regarding submission guidelines can be found on the Nonhuman Notions website.
Nova founded the Fictionfolk Webring for folks with fictional components to their identities. If that sounds like you, look into how to join here.
The Body et. al created the SouthBeastern Webring for alterhumans in the southeastern United States. It's currently only open to folks who are also a part of the Florida (Alterhu)man Discord server, a group organized by Orion Scribner for alterhumans in the southeastern US as well.
Draconity: A Draconic Zine is open for submissions! Created by Nova, this zine is seeking pieces about draconity by alterhumans and nonhumans. Submissions close November 1st, 2025.
Bayou started the Alterhuman Minizine Jam in February to massive success! Zines created by the community can be found on Tumblr.
The Interstellar System started a new alterhuman comic, What's Alter-Happening? Comic pages can be found on their Tumblr.
Nova has challenged themselves to make a regular comic strips for 2025, titled collectively under Three Heads One Braincell. These strips are about their lives as an alterhuman system, and you can find them on their Tumblr.
The NSFW zine Nocturne has officially cancelled its second issue, with no plans from the creator to return to the concept. The creator no longer considers itself to be a member of the alterhuman community (so don't pester it about it.)
The Journal of Being zine which was originally slated for a 2025 release has been cancelled.
The status of the Mosaic of the Unhuman zine remains unknown: organizer Soweli-Musi reported last year that the zine has been compiled, but is still waiting on absent co-organizer Starry-Bear to provide additional writings and artwork.
The Hall of Creators convention, which was scheduled for May 3 - 4, 2025, was cancelled without warning. It's currently unknown if the biannual convention will be scheduled for its fall session or if it will remain on indefinite hiatus.
After publishing Issue #3, the Inky Paws zine has officially gone on hiatus for 2025.

im gonna blow ur mind rn ok ? (/sarcasm?)
the reason physically identifying alterhumans are important to our community isnt just because of anti-sanism. there are infinite reasons someone might ID physically that has nothing to do with mental illness whatsoever. if every conversation that's had around this topic is directly related to mental illness/centers mentally ill people that's also really regressive
furthermore i think the pressure online to reveal Exactly What Type of Guy you Are is not a very good thing when it is treated as the default. "im a guy because im mentally ill!!" perhaps true but also not necessary information to share with every stranger that happens upon yer blog so i wish this was not seen as the default way to share information. "im a dragon because im mentally ill/spiritual/etc" can easily be shortened to "im a dragon" and convey the exact same amount of information. its ok to not want to reveal everything, privacy should be seen as the default

My species dysphoria is a lot less "why can't I have x feature of a werewolf/wolverine" and a lot more "I already am a werewolf/wolverine but it hurts that other people don't fully see it and I can't live the right kind of life"

"You can't have [experience] because you don't identify as [label]!!!" how do I explain to people that experiences exist outside of and prior to the formation of specific language to talk about them
"You can't have [experience] because you don't think of it through [framework/explanation/etc]!!!" how do I explain to people that experiences exist outside of and prior to any formal cosmology, hypotheses, or explanation assigned to them

all of the tags im seeing people add from this post are making my vegan heart smile yippie
yes, you are 100% correct. personhood is not exclusive to humans. personhood is something that human supremacy has weaponized against us all. we are all (humans and nonhumans) people, a thing which is worthy of respect, dignity, autonomy, etc. that is what being a person means. that's it
furthermore, if someone associates personhood with humanity[/human supremacy] and only sees a divide between personhood and animality... this says more about their view of human supremacy/what it means to be an Animal than it does for the rest of us;
there is no divide. we are all animal. we are people by default because to be an animal is to be a person [is to be worthy of respect, dignity, autonomy, simply WORTHY.]
animal rights & liberation 🤝 alterhumanity. paw in loving paw.

This may just be me, but I don’t get alterhumans’ aversion to the term “people”.
Like, to me, personhood is not exclusive to humanity.
If sentient aliens came to our planet tomorrow, would we not consider them people?
Personhood to me is simply an effect of sentience.
If you can comprehend your own existence, you are a person.
Sure, that’s mostly humans, but I’m a dog who can comprehend my own existence, and I belive that makes me a person.
I am a nonhuman person, but a person nonetheless because I think, therefore I am
