My relationship with Movado
Tumblr media
I occasionally get asked by loved ones and watch enthusiasts "Why Movado?" It's always a long-winded response. I try to explain how there is so much quality and value in vintage Movados, but the brand has always resonated with me which is closer to the actual truth of why I love the brand. The Movado presence in my community was heavily felt. I was a 90's kid and heavily influenced by what the world had to offer. The 90s was a great time to be a New Yorker and the Movado brand has always felt like a 'New York' brand. Watch enthusiasts may think this is a no-brainer as Movado has had a long history with the city. But it was really the Hip Hop culture that helped introduce me to the brand that I would later appreciate.
As I said, I was a 90s kid and Rap in the 90s was arguably the best era for the genre. Within a short period of time, you had some of the best Rap albums from some of the best rappers released within a short period. Nas' Illmatic, Notorious BIG's Ready to Die, Mobb Deep's The Infamous, & Jay-Z 'Reasonable Doubt' were each amazing albums that showcased the energy NY had. Movado was always mentioned by New York rappers. Nas, Jay-Z, and even Biggie rapped about Movado. These men are often called the GOATs of Rap so you can imagine how your favorite rapper mentioning a brand may make you more cognizant of it.
The 90s, like today's Movados, heavily relied on the Museum design which I love. They are a classic despite how some may feel that in 2022 that it's an over-played style. I enjoyed going to the outlet store in Riverhead, NY, gawking at the Movado watches. I knew extremely little about watches at the point, only really being exposed to my dad's Timex quartz by than. But I loved how cool the watch was (especially compared to my dad's indiglo Timex). It definitely wasn't meant to tell time and I understood than how much more a watch can be that simply a tool of time.

The last 2 years
As I start this post, it's only with the intentions of providing what would be the mission statement of this blog. This blog is not so much me posting just about Movado watches but more so my journey thus far as a watch enthusiast. This blog will showcase my taste, perspective, and lack of knowledge as a navigate the 'rabbit hole' of the watch world.
