as all of his loved ones scattered back into the arena, he laid there in silence for a moment, letting the forced smile slip from his face. his leg continues to burn, a constant reminder of the match that had just unfolded, but it was nothing compared to the sting of losing again. fortunately, he never had to mask his pain in front of the boy standing next to him. robby’s eyes linger on the boy, something delicate in the way he looks at him now. ❝ yeah? ❞ robby says, his voice soft, almost like a question to himself more than to eli. the two had come a long way from their bitter rivalry. the anger they had towards each other ages ago seems to have faded, replaced with a quiet care for one another. though it's getting harder for him to ignore as time goes on. a slight grin pulls at his lips, ❝ you're stuck taking care of me now. you know that, right? i'm pretty high-maintenance. ❞

devon tilted her head, curiosity flickering in her eyes. she'd never known him like that, always seeing his as this confident guy who seemed to own any room he walked into. ❝ man, that sounds really rough, ❞ she said sincerely. she paused for a moment, glancing at the scar before meeting his eyes again. ❝ i can't even imagine what it must've been like for you. people can be... real assholey sometimes. ❞ unfortunately, she understood. after her mom had passed, people didn't know how to act around her. some avoided her completely, while others would try to offer quick fixes, as if saying things like 'you should be over it by now' or 'she's in a better place' would cure everything.

people didn't get it, and she didn't really care to let them in after that. ❝ badass? absolutely not. i was something else. ❞ she winced at the memory. it was the day she’d been kicked off the team, escorted out by counselor blatt. embarrassing. but it was also the day she met sensei lawrence and miguel outside the school while she was waiting for her ride home. her life changed for the better. ❝ to be honest, i was super angry back then, ❞ she added, her eyes falling to look at the ground, ❝ i don't miss it. ❞

   sometimes he found it hard to believe too.   the person he was now was a far cry from the dejected boy who hid his face behind his hand. it wasn't something eli often talked about --- it wasn't really something anyone asked him about either. he kind of liked being known for the mohawk, his past slowly but surely fading into the distance. once he would have said that it could rot there. he'd grown a lot those past few years though, & realized that sometimes addressing those things that had hurt him so much could be a good thing. the corners of his mouth curved, a soft huff of laughter following. ❛ worst labor ever. ❜ the question caught him off guard, and for a moment he tensed. he had nothing to hide anymore though. ❛ mmm, not really. i was a completely different person back then. i got treated like shit by a lot of people for this. ❜ he pointed towards his scar, the thing that had held so much power over him and how he felt about himself for so long. ❛ definitely wasn't some badass cursing out my competition during debate. ❜

thinking about what tanner said on dallas's podcast, how having karate got robby out of trouble. and of course the people in the comments thought it was silly because look at how much trouble karate has caused... but he's not wrong!! karate took him off the path of becoming so far gone that he could never come back. robby would not be where he is today had he said no to learning miyagi do from daniel. without that introduction to miyagi do, he might've been further lost. even though karate brought some trouble to his life, it also gave him a path out of some darker places. without that experience, robby wouldn’t have had the turning points he did. karate was his saving grace in a way, even if it came with its setbacks.

he's standing near the door, smiling as he gently shakes hands with a few of the last congregants, ushering them out of the building. bobby’s smile falters for just a second when he turns and sees the tall figure approach him from the back of the church. he knew that face. sure, they'd never crossed paths directly, but he had been brought up to speed about all that this man had done— courtesy of johnny, who had no problem sharing his thoughts on the guy. bobby shifts uncomfortably, clearing his throat before offering a tight, slightly strained smile. ❝ a good inspiration, i hope? ❞ he questions, ❝ well, you know what they say. it's never been about how many chairs are filled, but how many lives are changed. i'd still get up there, even if only one person showed up. ❞ the man straightens slightly, a little more at ease now, though still cautious. ❝ i don't believe we've met, ❞ but i know who you are, he wants to say. but instead, he offers his hand, ❝ i’m robert. friends call me bobby. ❞

But I gotta admit— ”  Stepping aside as a few remaining members of the congregation filter out, it’s with a slight slouch of his lofty frame that Silver rests a palm against one of the pews, peering to the pastor with the faintest semblance of a smile playing on his lips. Having been sat at the back, it was his intention to slip out at the end, something  niggling away at the back of the mind causing for the elderly man to approach to pay a well-deserved compliment.  “ It was, in fact, inspiring. ”

❝ you're going to do great out there. ❞ daniel said, stepping forward to offer the boy his encouragement before the tournament ensues. this was a bittersweet moment. if this were the old him, back when he and johnny were at odds, he would've looked at miguel in that cobra kai gi with disdain. but now, seeing the young man stand before him, he couldn't help but feel a sense of pride. he thinks back to the first moment he saw miguel. the night he stormed into johnny's dojo, automatically assuming the worst out of him for bringing cobra kai back. you shouldn’t believe a word this guy says, or you’ll end up exactly like him, he'd said. but for once in his life, daniel was glad the boy hadn't listened to him. ❝ no matter what happens, you should be proud of yourself, miguel. ❞ he places a comforting hand on miguel’s shoulder, giving it a gentle pat. ❝ we definitely are. ❞
