Obviously we had verbal agreement while filming and talking to people. But these are the signed consent forms that we got from Doug and Kenny, as well as one for the overall club signed by Doug since Peter (club president) is away overseas.

Exporting
The video is done!
Ella and I spent Thursday morning working on the rest of out film in the video suite. We attempted to export but weren’t happy with the result. When we watched it back the colours of the inside club scenes looked really desaturated. We were confused about this since we already went through and checked all our colour. However, in the suite there are two monitors that you can look at, and both of them are quite different in terms of colour, therefore we didn’t know which one to base our colour off (Mike wasn’t too sure either).
Today after darkroom we decided to export again, we didn’t have our notes but borrowed someone else's. We couldn’t find the ‘apple pro res 4444′ setting in the exporting options, so we decided to go with a high quality Youtube HD setting. The colours were still off, so to fix this we bumped up the saturation a little bit for those scenes then exported again. The final copy we have no is good, so hopefully it’ll be fine for the final submission.
Another problem we tend to have with exports is that sometimes it’ll freeze a bit when playing the video file, We’re hoping this won’t happen either, we’re not sure what actually causes it either.
Time to hand in!

Had no idea Farmers Weekly was actually a thing, but a little info on pigeon Wing Theory, and how that can effect each bird and how it may perform in races.

Thought I’d look in to the eye-sign theory that Kenny was talking about, and likes to refer to when breeding his birds. This article covers each ring of the eye, and breaks down the meaning of each in relation to a particular pigeon (Heidi) 🐦

Pecking Order Pt. 2
Found this short interview with the director of “Pecking Order’ - Slavko Martinov, which was quite good to watch! He talked about his previous work and how the idea of the film actually came about.

Pecking Order
While doing the interview with Kenny, he mentioned a NZ film he liked called Pecking Order. The film in based of the 148-year old Christchurch Poultry, Bantam and Pigeon Club, and the events within the club. Ella and I tried our best to track down the full film, but couldn’t find it anywhere! The only way was to pay for the movie, which we didn’t really want to do. The film looks hilarious in the way it was shot and edited adding the element of humour to the topic of birds, which we really liked. Ella and I like representing the pigeon club in a light and heart-warming way, so we thought this would have been a great film to watch together. Unfortunately we couldn’t, but will be keeping an eye out!!

For Birds’ Sake
https://www.lensculture.com/articles/maria-sturm-and-cemre-yesil-for-birds-sake?utm_source=General+List&utm_campaign=8048e124b6-nl-05-09-2019&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_f1724e682d-8048e124b6-89583093&mc_cid=8048e124b6&mc_eid=7bf5c3e5c5
Caroline sent us this link to a book review of the book For Birds’ Sake by Maria storm and Cemre Yesil. The book is about bird keeping in Turkey. The book is really well made and crafted and includes a fabric zip case cover. The books content includes images of bird carrier boxes and bird cages as well as images of people and landscapes.
We found this text, book and images really interesting and beautiful. Our lives revolve around birds at the moment, especially pigeons. We feel that we both have a new appreciation for pigeons in particular racing pigeons.

Audio and final colour grading
Tumblr media
Now that we had our final cuts together, we took our video into the editing suite to make sure our audio levels were all okay and correct and also to do our final colour grading. We asked Mike to come in and show us a few things for example how to change audio peak levels etc. We found this super helpful and we managed finish our final video!! We are both super happy with how it turned out and are excited to share it with the class.
Note: When exported the colour looked faded, will check with Mike or Caroline to see if we exported the video to the right settings.

Here is a video of our video when we added credits. We tested a number of colours including white, white didn't work very well as it blended in with some of the background video, so we tried a range of pigeon blues and greys, also black. None of these worked super well so we came up with the solution of adding a thin black stroke to the white text and it worked really well! We are happy with our credits and titles.

This is our new improved intro, as it was brought to our attention that the use of cars and our title made it seem like our film was about race cars! Whoops.

Week Eleven
Ella
This week Chris Pryor came in to talk to us about his film knowledge and experience and also about his film “The Ground We Won”.
Below are my notes on his talk and also his points that he suggested for Darnah and I to fix/think about/change after watching our film.

During class today we had a guest speaker - Chris Pryor the director of ‘The Ground We Won’.
These are the notes from throughout his talk about the behind the scenes of making that film. As well as film timelines, creating a narrative and character development.
I think the most important thing I got from the talk was when he mentioned that ‘The subject is your relationship to the subject’, that really resonated with me and our film subject. The film itself can represent pigeon racing the sport, pigeons in Wellington, the people involved. But overall it just showcases our own relationship with the club and the people within.

LAST SHOOT - SANDBAR
Monday night was our last shoot with the pigeon club.
We went along to the club to find out the results of that weekends race , there were very few people there as the season is coming to an end and not many members are wanting to fly from the south island.
We also got Doug and Kenny to fill out their consent forms (we were a bit late there). And Doug also did the club consent form since Peter has left on his holiday.
We then followed Doug, Dave and Kenny to the local sandbar bar to have some post race drinks and hot chips (lemonade for me). It was Dougs shout since he won the race.
Ella and I set the camera up by the table and just left it rolling, I think it lasted a good 16 minutes before it filled the SD card. So we’ll get some footage from that shoot for our ending scene and that’ll be a wrap for filming!!
We were both sad that the project is coming to an end, we’ve really enjoyed spending time with this club and have really bonded with them. It’ll be weird not going over each week, or not working on the pigeon doco. We’ve had a lot of fun <3

Tuesday - More Bad News + Film Title
-DC
As said previously something went wrong with the video formatting for our first Doug interview, which was really annoying when it came to editing. On Tuesday Ella and discovered that the AUDIO for our 2nd interview was severely peaking and sounds horrible - like an old loud radio interview with cracks in the sound. This was really upsetting as we wanted to replace the old footage.
We had two options; Try to work with Dougs footage and audio and just piece things together. OR Just use Kenny’s interview because it came out really well.
Ella and I were conflicted. We had spent all this time with Doug, literally went to his house twice and he was so good to us - making the time etc. So we felt bad not having him in the main interview section.
So far we have edited the bits of Kenny’s footage that we want to use and our film is near the 3min mark. We could go back and salvage some footage to at least show the detail of Dougs loft but the only annoying thing is that we don’t have any good shots of him introducing himself and thats what we really wanted.
The decision is still to be decided, and has been filed in the ‘too hard to deal with’ box at the moment in time.
However, we have found a Title! after sifting through our Kenny footage

Kenny’s Interview (Sunday)
- Darnah
On Sunday morning we did our first interview with Kenny McFarlane. We went round to his house to view his personal loft and ask hime the same questions as Doug.
Kenny was a a natural in front of the camera, he was his usual talkative self which made it so much easier to film him. He answered all our questions in a unique was and will definitely add some personality to the film.
The filming took no longer than 30 minutes, and we were really happy with the result. After the initial questions he took us inside to see his Pigeon program on the computer where he keeps all his racing and breeding information about each bird (He’s very organised). He printed us a few copies of breeding charts and also the eye-sign theory which he likes to follow (info to come) which I’m going to do more research into as it’s quite interesting
Overall the trip to Kenny’s was successful and are happy with the outcome. It’s now time to edit it all together!!
