Hm. My Jay was rather similar. In your time, homosexuality is legal, yes? So you have nothing much to lose if you do ask him.

I would advise you to just straight up tell him - “Jay, I really like you. Would you like to go on a date?”

Something like that, perhaps? Or maybe find some way to show him that you aren’t straight, unless he already knows. That way, he would know that it’s possible you feel romantic for him?
