#PICTUREBOOKS - Prompt 8
(Nedalcu 2017 TUMBLR)
Researching #Picturebooks was fun. Illustrations that are humerous to adults and children was like taking a trip down memory lane. This hashtag provides the searcher with an array of images and stories that this researcher had not even heard of before, it is quite an eye opener. I found illustrators galore and did not even realise that TUMBLR was such an avenue for them to promote their work.
The image above is the story ‘Cowboy Car’ released last year in 2017 and tells the story of a car with big dreams. There is clever use of language throughout such as ‘brake dancing’ instead of ‘breakdancing’ as it is a car and it has brakes... much to my amusement at least. This story harbours a connection to the film ‘Cars’ that students will most likely be familiar with. They can use this prior knowledge use their relationship with that story to aid their interest and understanding to this story as they themselves can relate to having dreams.

Prompt 7 - “Here Boy”
The resource “Here Boy” is a great tool for children to utilise in the classroom to assist them with recount writing and word play. Associating the learning with a dog, to help them tell the story is a great way to engage students in the task. In a nutshell this resource offers students the opportunity to retell the short video that plays. Students become involved with word play, word association and learn about the importance of additional information through the utilisation of adverbs.
This resource offers step by step instructions to assist students in correctly making a sentence for the video that plays for them.
Once the students have had the opportunity to play around with the words available to them to retell the story and correctly structure a sentence, they are able to add more additional information in the form of adverbs to the story to make it uniquely theirs. Students could easily spend 15-30min going through this task during literacy rotation and print off their end result and paste it into their books.
This will then serve as a reference for them whenever they need assistance remembering what an adverb is and how to correctly use them when writing. Their end result that they have printed can serve as evidence for students to demonstrate their understanding of adverbs, sentence structure and recount writing style.

Placement Round Two year 3...
What can I say about placement, it was absolutely fantastic. The staff members all made me feel so welcome and the students (all boys) made me feel just like a qualified teacher too....
My placement was different for year three as I am enrolled in the ‘Middle Years Option’ meaning that I went to a secondary school for placement this year. I was based in a History classroom teaching a variety of students from years 8, 9 and 10.
In terms of literacy, it was disheartening to see how many students that were not confident reading aloud and also the amount of students who struggled to both read and understand some of what they were reading. Further to this, sadly handwriting for the most part did not get much better and as you can imagine neither did articulation. They had been asked to read out their text book (Oxford Big Ideas Humanities) to prompt conversation.
Students in years 8 and 9 constantly complained with the amount of writing they had to do when I conducted a note taking lesson and an essay modelling class. After it was pointed out how little writing we were actually doing in comparison to their upcoming assessment, they did not mention the amount of writing again.
I really liked the challenge of making classes engaging to an older group of students and I also enjoyed the conversation and banter you are able to have with students at this age group.
Overall, despite the challenges of teaching teenagers and having to work in different classrooms every session, I thoroughly enjoyed my time on placement and am most definitely determined to complete the next 18 months!
p.s Sadly I could not upload any photos to add to this post.

George’s Marvellous Medicine
My memory from being read to in the classroom was in grade 2. I brought in my own book for the teacher to read to us all. Everyone loved how she read the book. The animation she used just got everyone excited and eager to see what happened next! It made me really want to finish the book in my own time as we never did get to finish it in class.
