Charleston Walking Tour:
Charleston Walking Tour; Featuring a historic view of Charleston’s Black History and its deep roots in our community. Frankly Charleston Black History Tours is a Sightseeing Tour Agency, located in downtown Charleston, SC. This walking tour offers an historic walk through the “Antebellum Section” in downtown Charleston, SC & explores the challenges faced by our black community’s ancestry, hosted by Franklin D. Williams.
Learn how this community endured during some really jaded times in our county’s history. Life in the 5th Ward of Colonial Charles Town, aka: “The Wraggborough Neighborhood”, named after slave-trader Joseph Wraggs, was not an easy one.
youtube
This Charleston walking tour will take you back to those times and give you a true understanding of Black Heritage in The Old South. You will walk away with a renewed appreciation for modern-day freedom, which we all take for granted, and a complete historic understanding of the lives of the enslaved Africans who persevered through these historic, tough times.
This historic walking tour in Charleston, SC is fast becoming one of the best downtown sightseeing attractions.
We are a family business that wants to share with the tourist of Charleston, SC the African American History of the great Holy City. Our goal is to share how the urban enslaved lived differently and apart from their rural kin.
“There is no other colony in America whose story comes close to Charleston’s when it comes to the enslaved Africans,” says Franklin Williams owner/operator of Frankly Charleston.” America had slavery but in Charleston slavery was a peculiar industry.

Aiken-Rhett House Museum — Charleston, SC 29403

Aiken-Rhett House Museum — Charleston, SC 29403
Located in downtown Charleston, the Aiken-Rhett House was built in 1820 by merchant John Robinson, the Aiken-Rhett House is nationally significant as one of the best-preserved townhouse complexes in the nation. Vastly expanded by Governor and Mrs. William Aiken, Jr. in the 1830s and again in the 1850s, the house and its outbuildings include a kitchen, the original slave quarters, carriage block and back lot. The house and its surviving furnishings offer a compelling portrait of urban life in antebellum Charleston, as well as a Southern politician, slaveholder and industrialist. The house spent 142 years in the Aiken family’s hands before being sold to the Charleston Museum and opened as a museum house in 1975.
youtube
When the Foundation assumed ownership of the property, we adopted a preserved-as-found preservation approach, meaning the structure and contents are left in an “as-found” state, including furniture, architecture and finishes that have not been altered since the mid 19th century. The only restored room in the house, the art gallery, showcases paintings and sculpture the Aiken family acquired on their European Grand Tour.
While many dependency buildings in Charleston have been demolished or adapted, the Aiken-Rhett slave quarters — with their original paint, floors and fixtures — survive virtually untouched since the 1850s, allowing visitors the unique chance to better comprehend the every-day realities of the enslaved Africans who lived on-site, maintained the household and catered to the needs of the Aiken family and their guests.
Thinking of a visit to The Aiken-Rhett House Museum, here is a link for more information on admission cost and ticket purchase.

The Battery — Charleston, SC 29401
The Battery — Charleston, SC 29401
Tumblr media
The Battery — Charleston, SC 29401
The Battery in Charleston, SC 29401, is a landmark defensive seawall and promenade in Charleston, South Carolina. It was named for a civil-war coastal defense artillery battery at the site, and stretches along the lower shores of the Charleston peninsula, bordered by two rivers which meet here to form Charleston harbor. The Battery offers stunning views of both historic downtown Charleston and its vibrant neighborhoods. With numerous outdoor restaurants overlooking the water, this location has been an integral part of Lowcountry life since it was first built in 1704 as a military outpost on land donated from John Drayton’s Plantation to King George II of England. The Battery is a historic district in Charleston, South Carolina. The Battery was originally designed by Charles Pinckney, who also designed the plan for the city of Charleston itself. It served as an integral part of the defensive system that protected Charleston during its time as one of America’s most important ports. At this site in 1780, Patriot forces under General Benjamin Lincoln repelled a major invasion by British troops coming upriver from Georgetown (modern-day Georgetown County), SC after they had captured Fort Sullivan on Sullivan’s Island and began advancing inland to capture Charleston. The Battery is a landmark defensive seawall and promenade in Charleston, South Carolina. Named for a civil-war coastal defense artillery battery at the site, it stretches along the lower shores of the Charleston peninsula, bordered by the Ashley and Cooper Rivers, which meet here to form Charleston harbor. Before The Battery was constructed in 1820, its location on Sullivan’s Island drew many settlers who were escaping yellow fever outbreaks that plagued urban areas like downtown Charleston. Today The Battery continues to be an integral part of life in Charleston as it hosts numerous event's year round including Fourth of July fireworks celebration; Festival; Earth Day Celebration; Arts Festivals; Wine & Food Festival; Music Series with local musicians playing jazz classics, funk/soul
youtube
Historically, it has been understood to extend from the beginning of the seawall at the site of the former Omar Shrine Temple (40–44 East Bay Street) to the intersection of what is now Murray Boulevard and King Street. The higher part of the promenade, paralleling East Battery, as the street is known south of Water Street, to the intersection of Murray Boulevard, is known as High Battery. Fort Sumter is visible from the Cooper River side (High Battery) and from the point, as are Castle Pinckney, the World War II aircraft carrier USS Yorktown (CV-10), Fort Moultrie, and Sullivan’s Island.
In popular speech and in a number of unofficial guidebooks and Websites, The Battery and White Point Garden are sometimes referred to as “Battery Park,” but the park and seawall promenade are not regarded by the City of Charleston as a single entity, and the term “Battery Park” is not an official designation. The Battery Charleston is a historic neighborhood in downtown Charleston, South Carolina. The neighborhood was traditionally understood to extend from the beginning of the seawall at the site of the former Omar Shrine Temple (40–44 East Bay Street) to the intersection of what is now Murray Boulevard and King Street. The higher part of the promenade paralleling East Battery as it’s known south of Water Street, to the intersection with Murray Blvd., is called High Battery. The Battery is the historic district in Charleston, South Carolina that contains many of the city’s attractions. It was designated as a National Historical Landmark District on October 15, 1966.
It is traditionally divided into three parts: The Upper Battery at East Bay Street and Meeting Street; The Middle Battery at Broad Street between East Bay and Water Streets; and The Lower Battery below Broad Street to the east of Water Street.
The name “Battery” comes from artillery placements or emplacements which were set up to protect the city during its colonial period. The Battery Charleston, SC 29401, United States Q3CC+3F Charleston, South Carolina, USA

The Angel Oak Park is located on Johns Island, where you can find what is known as “A Low-Country Treasure”. The Southern Live Oak tree is a historical site and focal point of one of the City of Charleston’s public parks. It was planted in 1681 by early settlers who wanted to provide lumber for the building of homes, churches, and vessels. In 1867, it became part of an estate owned by Judge Charles Cotesworth Pinckney. The Park was acquired from the family in 1943 after they donated it to the city for use as a public park. Today its trunk has a circumference exceeding 100 feet with limbs up to 165 feet high, making it one-of-a-kind among live oak trees east of the Mississippi River. Angel Oak Tree is a southern live oak that has survived over 800 years and continues to grow. The tree was damaged by Hurricane Hugo in 1989, but as it’s grown stronger each year, the Angel Oak Tree still stands proudly today. Hanahan Butterfly & Pollinator Garden
Hanahan Butterfly and Pollinator Garden is located at the Hanahan Public Library. The garden has a variety of plants that attract butterflies and pollinators, including native wildflowers like Black-Eyed Susan, Cardinal Flower, Swamp Milkweed, Purple Coneflower, Goldenrod and more. Clemson Extension’s Teresa Lott talks with Keep Hanahan Beautiful volunteer Kathy Stone about their plant selection and the various butterflies they attract. In addition, they talk about a rain garden installed in the garden by Clemson Extension to help reduce storm water runoff while providing habitat for wildlife. The Hanahan Butterfly and Pollinator Garden was designed to engage the entire community. This garden is a 770 square foot plot of land that was developed, and is maintained, by the Berkeley Hills Garden Club with help from other motivated volunteers. The garden strives to educate, motivate, and empower citizens in beautification, conservation, and preservation of our environment. It provides an opportunity for residents to learn about pollinators through hands-on activities while they are gardening themselves!

Boone Hall Plantation — Mt Pleasant, SC 29464
Boone Hall Plantation — Mt Pleasant, SC 29464
Tumblr media
Boone Hall Plantation
Boone Hall Plantation is a historic district located in Mount Pleasant, Charleston County, South Carolina. The most important historic structures in the district are the brick slave cabins along Slave Street, which date between 1790 and 1810. The plantation, which used enslaved labor until the American Civil War, is one of America’s living history museums that preserves the country’s social history through interactive exhibits and programs. Surrounding Boone Hall Plantation are acres of farmland where visitors can see how crops were farmed before industrial farming techniques became popular at the turn of this century.
It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983 with a boundary increase in 1994. Boone Hall Plantation is one of America’s few remaining working plantations and home to some of Charleston’s oldest oak trees. The plantation was established shortly after the founding of the Carolina Colony and witnessed the Revolutionary War, birth of the nation, Civil War, 1837 incorporation of Mount Pleasant as a city — all while continuing to operate as an operating cotton plantation until 1942 when it stopped growing commercial crops for profit. Boone Hall Plantation and Gardens is a historic site where you can step back in time to the 18th century. Boone Hall Plantation was founded in 1681 when Englishman Major John Boone came to Charleston and established a lucrative plantation and gracious home on the banks of Wampacheone Creek. The family and descendants of Major Boone were influential in the history of South Carolina, the colonies, and the nation. In 1743, the son of Major John Boone planted live oak trees, arranging them in two evenly spaced rows that form a beautiful avenue for visitors to stroll under today. The property has been owned by five generations of Boone's, including Daniel Morgan who commanded troops during both the American Revolution at Saratoga. Boone Hall Plantation is the only plantation museum in South Carolina. The Boone Hall Foundation, Inc., which operates the plantation and gardens, was founded by Mrs. James F. Byrnes to preserve the site for future generations of Americans to learn about life in a pre-industrialized society as well as its role in developing our nation’s history and culture. The Boone Hall Foundation has been operating as a nonprofit educational institution since 1954 and continues to maintain this focus with hands-on exhibits on 18th century crafts such as spinning, weaving, cooking skills, animal husbandry practices and slave life at Boone Hall Plantation during the Antebellum era. Colonial Dorchester State Historic Site — Summerville, SC 29485
Colonial Dorchester State Historic Site — Summerville, SC 29485
Tumblr media
Colonial Dorchester State Historic Site
Colonial Dorchester State Historic Site is a 325-acre park in South Carolina. Located near the town of Summerville, it offers visitors a glimpse into South Carolina’s colonial past and its connection to the American Revolution. The site has been donated to the state of SC and added to National Register on December 2nd 1969.
The site was originally known as “Old Dorchester” because it was developed by English settler Thomas Bull in 1686. It served as a major settlement for many years before Charleston became more important after 1720 when an earthquake destroyed much of Old Dorchester’s infrastructure. In 1780, General Cornwallis set up his headquarters at what is now Colonial Dorchester Park while he planned his attack
Colonial Dorchester State Historic Site is a preserved archaeological site in South Carolina. The trading town of Dorchester flourished from 1697 until the beginning of the Revolutionary War, inland from colonial Charleston. Today, Colonial Dorchester’s remarkably preserved archaeological remains give visitors a peek into early history of colonial South Carolina. The site has been recognized as one of the most important archeological sites in North America by National Geographic and was listed among their “World’s 10 Most Amazing Archaeological Finds” after being discovered on an 18th-century map. The Colonial Dorchester State Historic Site is a historic site in South Carolina. The town’s fear of an impending French invasion in 1757 prompted the construction of a powder magazine and fort, which was fortified in 1775. Fort Dorchester saw little activity until the Revolutionary War, during which it served as an important military depot and strategic point. St. George’s Anglican Church was burned during the Revolution, though parts of it were salvaged and repaired, and members continued to worship at this location for many years. Today visitors can explore two 18th-century houses on site: one that belonged to Robert Smith who served as Governor from 1778–1779; and another home originally built by John Barker Alston Colonial Dorchester State Historic Site is a 17th-century village located in Charleston, South Carolina with structures from the late 17th century. The site was inhabited by colonists until it was abandoned in 1698 when planters moved their houses to higher ground. It has been excavated several times since the 1920s and artifacts have been found that date back as far as 7,000 years ago! Visitors can watch archaeologists at work on site and learn about colonial life through exhibits in the Visitor Center.
The mission of Colonial Dorchester State Historic Site is to provide visitors with an opportunity for discovery and reflection on how people lived during the 18th century. They hope that this will inspire visitors to explore how they lived in the day and the burdens they bore.
