i'm so obsessed with this exchange between christopher and the cop who (tony claims) killed his father, especially christopher's reply "it wouldn't make any difference." because all it would mean if tony fabricated the story is that he was trying provoke chris into killing this guy for some other reason. and ultimately, if tony wants him to kill this guy, then chris has to kill him. if that's the case, and he has to do it either way, then why not choose to believe tony's telling the truth? at least then he'll get some satisfaction out of doing it. what's the point in questioning it?
it stands out to me because chris brings this up a lot in the episodes that follow, often when tony is scolding him or trying to exert control over chris's behavior. chris will respond by saying he knows he owes tony and will do what he asks.

but even as he's committing the murder, chris is aware it very well might be a made-up story. and yet because he chooses to believe it, he is also choosing to feel indebted to tony.

i think that's because it makes it easier for christopher, as their relationship grows more and more rocky. he's doing this because he owes tony, because he helped him get justice. it's easier to live with that than to live with the reality that he has to do this or his uncle will kill him. not that chris was ever under any illusions about being untouchable- for a while in early s1 he sincerely believed tony attempted to have him killed for giving meadow drugs - but at the start of the series the danger is equally terrifying and enticing. he wants to do jobs for tony to advance in the mob, he wants to get made, the risk was the price he paid for getting ahead. however by the time this happens in 4x01, he's already been made and tony's started grooming him for the top job and christopher still feels depressed and unsatisfied. so instead he starts to rely on feelings of indebtedness to make his life of being and tony's beck and call bearable, because he has none of the fulfillment he thought he'd have once he reached this level to make it worthwhile.
and what's especially heartbreaking is that during 4x01 tony tells melfi his plan is ultimately to make christopher someone who can take the fbi heat off of him. and he's so smug about it!

tony knew exactly the psychological effect this would have on chris, and so he can gloat to melfi about his schemes and how under his thrall christopher is without fear. tony's an emotional guy and he can get quite sentimental with christopher, but that just makes the moments where he reveals how calculated his relationship with chris is even impactful. because the affection for him tony feels (while genuine) is ultimately just another tool for him to damn this boy he claims to view as a son. chris is right that whether or not the cop was the killer is immaterial, because either way tony has engineered this scenario to manipulate christopher, who is already trapped and knows it.
