“BABU AND BIBI 2” (MR AND MRS), a painting in Watercolour done by me on A3 Bockingford 300 gsm Watercolour paper. This painting is an inspiration from the Kalighat style of painting after Anwar Chitrakar. ABOUT KALIGHAT PAINTING The painters of this style of painting are known as Patua’s or Chitrakars. The themes they covered were the characters from mythology and during the 19th century, they covered subjects like contemporary lifestyles, and social issues with a hint of wit. In this painting, a Bengali couple is seated and enjoying a warm afternoon. Kalighat painting was the first artistic expression of a subaltern culture in the Indian sub-continent that addressed the consumer directly; it was neither directed by nor produced for the capital or the ruling authority.

“MANJUSHREE”. Oil on canvas (63.5x89 cm/ 25x 35 inches) inspired by Tibetan Thangka style of Painting.
“THANGKA” style of painting is a Tibetan Buddhist style of painting. The history dates back to the paintings in Ajanta caves and Mogao caves in China. The paintings were done on silk cloth and was preserved rolled and unrolled when displayed. This style was either painted on cloth or embroidered and typically small in size.
“MANJUSHREE” It is the meditational deity and is considered as fully Enlighted Buddha as per Vajrayana Buddhism and is one of the thirteen Buddhas.
Manjushree is depicted as a male bodhisattva wielding a flaming sword in his right hand, representing the realisation of transcendent wisdom which cuts down ignorance and duality. The scripture supported by the lotus held in his left hand is representing his attainment of ultimate realization from the blossoming of wisdom.

“RADHA KRISHNA”, a watercolour and ink painting done by me on Imperial size (22x30inches/56x76cms) Bockingford, 140 lbs./ 300gsm Cold Pressed Watercolour paper. This is an inspiration from the Kalamkari style of painting. KALAMKARI PAINTING Kalamkari style of painting has its root in Golconda, Andhra Pradesh in India, and flourished under the patronage of the Mughals. The Mughals referred to these artists as Kalamkars giving the art its name. Kalamkari is basically a pen art form and has its roots in storytelling by painters and musicians who were known as Chitrakattis. This art had been practiced by many families in Andhra Pradesh over the generations and is the primary source of income. The traditional Kalamkari art was done on cloth which was initially stiffened by dipping it in astringents and buffalo milk and dried under the sun. Dyes were extracted from plants. The red, black, brown, and violet portions were outlined with the pointed end of a bamboo or date palm stick. The cloth is then covered with wax except for the parts which were to be coloured with blue. The cloth is dipped in indigo dye. When dried the wax is scraped off and the remaining portions were painted by hand. Radha and Krishna are two mythological characters from Indian culture. Krishna as per Indian mythology was one of the most powerful incarnations of Vishnu (Vishnu is a member of the Holy Trinity). Krishna was the exponent of the Bhagavad Gita. Radha was the consort of Krishna. During Krishna's youth, Radha appears as a lover and a companion. In this painting, Radha and Krishna are seen playing the flute, and Radha is immersed in the sweetness of the music. A cow is breeding behind the pair. Krishna was also known as Gopala which means he owned a herd of cattle. The halo around Krishna's head is painted with iridescent colour which adds richness to the piece. #watercolorpainting #watercolourandink #kalamkari #traditionalart #collectibles #walldecor #interiordesign #homedecor #indiantraditionalart https://www.instagram.com/p/CU4pT5_hvCt/?utm_medium=tumblr
