“White Terrorist” is a photo series I felt was necessary for me to do because I feel that terrorism is constantly associated with Muslim culture and islamophobia has thrown so many harmful and dehumanizing stereotypes at Muslims.

It has been one year and
my hair has grown six inches
and my fingernails have regrown themselves twice
and all the red blood cells in my veins
and arteries
and capillaries
have replaced themselves
three times over.
and my baby sister is about to graduate college
and I have a new place now
and I think I’m going to start classes again
I’m thinking about that career change, you see.
and I’m going to buy new furniture
and I’ve lost twenty-five pounds
and I don’t cry so much anymore
not because I forgot how to
but because my tears are no longer for you.
sometimes you give your heart to people
who will send it back
covered in stamps and
roughed up in the post.
cardiac cells do not regenerate.
but there are stem cells in the heart
that replace themselves
every twenty years.
and in another year or two
I will have spent more time
without you
than I ever had with you.
and in another year after that,
I will have spent more time
forgetting
than I ever did making
memories.
maybe I will see you again one day
maybe I will smile then
and ask, how’ve you been?
or maybe I will say nothing at all
and walk on by.
only 33% of me will still love you
in the parts that cannot be replaced.
It has been one year since we stopped talking
and I’ve changed my hair color three times
and I laugh a lot these days
and I have love in my life now
the kind that forms in neurons and cardiac cells
the kind that does not make you choose
and I think I am going to be okay
I am going to be better than okay.
