Furniture City Date
Karma: Loneliness
"I want to be with you... just like this."
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Section 1
It was four o’clock in the afternoon. I was just waking up, still exhausted after an all-night shoot the night before.
As I raised my hand, the ginkgo bracelet on my wrist reminded me of the man who saved me that night.
Willow: You can’t just cancel like that! Hey… hey!
Willow looked at me anxiously after getting hung up on.
Willow: The guest’s not coming. What do we do?
I rubbed my temples to compose myself. As I looked around, I was that the whole crew was ready and waiting.
I had invited this famous action director to give an interview for a fighting documentary we were shooting.
It definitely gonna have a negative effect on the film and our brand if we cancel the shoot. What to do…
Nearing the end of my rope, Gavin suddenly came to mind. Right! He may be able to help.
Taking a chance, I made a call to Gavin. It rang a long time, and I was about to hang up, when the call was picked up.
Gavin: Hey, I’m here.
Section 2
Soon Gavin arrived at the set. I felt quite guilty when I saw how tired he was.
Gavin seemed to read my mind and smiled at me.
Gavin: I was hoping you’d call me, and not just when you’re in danger…
Maybe it was because it was late and quiet, but his words sounded unusually loud. I froze as I watched Gavin walk into the spotlight.
Gavin left soon after the shoot. When he did, I was focused on the monitors and didn’t even have a minute to say thanks.
When I remembered that, I sat up in bed and texted Gavin.
MC: I never had time to thank you yesterday.
I held the phone waiting for his reply. Before long, I received one.
Gavin: Don’t mention it.
And then another soon after.
Gavin: Any plans for the weekend?
His sudden asking like this took me a bit by surprise, but without thinking too much about it, I told him my plans.
MC: I gotta go to Furniture City to buy some kitchen stuff.
Gavin: Cool, then you can thank me in person.
MC: In person?
Gavin: I gotta pick up something too. I’ll join you.
I thought about it, typed in “ok”, and hit send.
As I put down the phone, a breeze blew through the window, lightly fanning me as I mused.
Thinking back on what I’ve been through recently, it’s like a dream.
I never thought I’d see Gavin again after graduation.
Not to mention spending the weekend with him…
But… it’s just happening.
Thinking about the coming weekend, I couldn’t help feeling nervous, but with a little anticipation mixed in.
Section 3
That weekend, when I arrived at the furniture store, Gavin was already waiting for me. I picked him out in the crowd right away.
MC: Good morning, Gavin.
Gavin: Morning.
Different from the Gavin who came out to the film set in the middle of the night, this Gavin in broad daylight seems full of vigor.
I followed him carefully into the crowded store.
MC: So what are you gonna buy?
Gavin: A floor lamp.
MC: (Reading the store map) Lighting’s way in the back. Let’s browse our way back there.
Gavin: Okay.
Following the map, we arrived in the kitchen wares area.
I became engrossed immediately, since that’s what I was there for after all.
MC: (Holding a cutely-shaped iron ring) Gavin, guess what this is?
Gavin: …
Seeing the perplexed look on Gavin’s face, I couldn’t help laughing as I explained to him.
MC: It’s a mold for frying eggs. You can make a smiley-face egg with it. Adorable, isn’t it?
MC: The kitchen ware here is all so creative. Cooking with this stuff will be so fun.
Gavin: Seems you love cooking.
MC: Yeah. It’s quite the hobby.
MC: I try new kinds of cooking all the time. Although, sometimes the results are a bit… not great.
MC: What about you? Do you cook?
Gavin: (Laughing) My meals are all either delivery or TV dinners.
MC: Ooh… That’s no good.
Gavin: I’m not picky about food.
MC: (Looking at Gavin) Maybe you can try some of my cooking next time.
Gavin: (Eyes light up in a smile) …
I walked to a shelf and stood on my tiptoes to reach a pan at the top, but it was just out of reach.
Just then, a pair of arms appear over my head.
The tall figure standing behind me happened to trap me between him and the shelf.
Such close contact sped up my heartbeat.
Gavin easily grabbed what I was trying to get.
My cheeks flushed as I felt the heat between us.
MC: T-thank you…
I walked from shelf to shelf and soon had every item checked off my list.
I felt perfectly satisfied looking at the “haul” I had in my bag.
But then when I raised my head, I found I’d lost track of Gavin.
So I headed back the way I came to find him.
I called his name as I made my way through the crowded aisles.
Gavin: Watch out!
From out of nowhere, Gavin pulled me into his arms.
A shopping cart loaded with items passed by right where I was standing.
Gavin: You okay?
MC: Yeah… Where have you been?
Gavin waved a bunny hand puppet in front of me.
Gavin: It looks a lot like you.
MC: A bunny! It’s so adorable!
Gavin opened his hand and the bunny acted like it was going to give me a hug.
That’s a side of Gavin I’d never seen, the childish one.
Section 4
We continued on through the store and soon arrived at the lighting department.
Different from previous displays, all the lighting was set up in model rooms each with a particular style.
MC: What kinda lamp do you want?
Gavin: Nothing special. Just something that works.
MC: Well, style is also important. What about that one?
I took Gavin to a modern minimalist style living room.
I sat on the khaki-colored sofa and turned on the floor lamp. Warm light splashed my face.
MC: Think about it. You get home from a long day’s work and sit on your cozy couch.
MC: And you’re surrounded by soft yellow light. Feels warm, right?
MC: And under the couch there’s gotta be a white rug for your feet, so you don’t get cold in the winter.
MC: Then you can make some coffee and read a book. Or just watch TV if you don’t feel like reading.
MC: And you can just leave the dishes there if you don’t feel like doing them just now. A kind of simple but happy life.
I kept laying out my ideal life without noticing Gavin had started to stare, his eyes full of warmth.
MC: Gavin…
Gavin came to.
MC: What do you think of this one?
Gavin: Looks good.
MC: Looks good, looks good. They all “look good”. Which one do you really prefer?
I looked around for the next option as I talked.
After going through the whole area, we still hadn’t reached a decision.
And I felt a bit tired after walking for hours.
I sat on a bed in a bedroom display and lay down slowly.
I closed my eyes to isolate myself from the surrounding noise.
Suddenly I heard something. As I opened my eyes, it turned out to be Gavin laying beside me.
MC: …!
I looked away hastily when he looked at me, but he still caught me looking flustered.
At that moment, I accidentally touched the switch of a floor lamp.
As the lamp turned on, the room became a starry sky.
The swirling sea of stars against an azure blue backdrop took my breath away.
MC: Look, it’s a star lamp!
As I turned my head and looked Gavin in the eyes, I found that he had been staring at me the whole time.
The stars were shining on his face, and his eyes were lit up like stars to match.
He looked at me for a long time, his eyes revealing a kind of tenderness I’d never seen.
My face started to get flushed, but as I tried to get up, Gavin grabbed my hand.
He looked at the whirling, starry sky.
Gavin: I wanna stay with you… just like this.
Later in life I always think back on this day. The first time we did something so ordinary together, the first time I saw his childish side, the first time we talked about the future.
That day Gavin didn’t buy a floor lamp like he wanted. I learned a long time later that he bought that star lamp for himself.
Does he think back on that day like I do whenever he sees his starry sky at home?
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Summary
I was still rattled by what happened last night in the alley, so I decided to text Gavin a thank-you but was shocked to find a note from him asking me out on the weekend.
I got nervous just thinking about the date all week, but I admit I was also full of anticipation. After days of mixed emotions, the weekend finally arrived.
I was so occupied with picking out accessories that Gavin was gone when I was done. In my frenzy to look for him, a shopping cart would’ve blindsided me if he didn’t pull me into him in time. He showed off a plush rabbit that he claimed to resemble me. It was the first time I ever saw a child side in him.
Fantasies ran through my mind as I stared at the models. I laid down on a bed and accidentally touched a button that turned on the star light. It felt like I was in a dream. Gavin slid over beside me and time stopped when our eyes locked. I’ve never seen such gentleness in someone’s glance.

Relieving Date
Karma: Source of Strength
"You're not defeated until you quit."
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Section 1
Recently I’ve been working late on tough projects that Victor has been assigning me.
Even when I’m out for a walk, I can’t help muttering to myself.
Kiki: (Popping out from behind me) Boss! What is it? You look real wound up.
MC: Yeah? I’ve been thinking about work stuff.
Kiki: Forget about that for now. We’re going on a “Team-building exercise”. Can you... take a break with us?
MC: (Hand on forehead) You guys go ahead. I gotta plan out this proposal.
Kiki: (Taking my hand) Oh c’mon. You can’t do your best work if you’re all stressed out!
I’m dragged from my desk by Kiki before I could object.
Section 2
-Bar-
In the crowded bar, people were drowning out their stress with music and alcohol.
I stared very carefully at the stack of dice before me.
The moment I put my dice on the top, the whole stack collapsed.
MC: Ah, no way...
Kiki: You again! Here’s your penalty.
After I take the shot from Kiki and slug it down, I realized I can’t even remember how much I’ve had tonight...
Kiki: Haha, c’mon. Come dance with us.
MC: (Feeling a little dizzy) Nah, nah. I’ll watch the bags.
Getting rid of my energetic colleagues, I finally got some alone time.
But just then a man with a slick smile came over.
Passerby a: Drinking alone, miss? Care for some company?
MC: Sorry, but I don’t know you.
Passerby a: You will after a drink or two. My treat.
MC: No, my friends will be back in a minute.
Passerby a: C’mon, don’t be like that.
MC: ...Scram or I’ll call the cops!
Passerby a: Whoa. That’s one tough chick...
With that, the man walked away resentfully.
MC: (Sigh of relief) Phew. That was close.
I started looking around, and not far away I spotted a familiar figure who turned out to be—
MC: Gavin!
I wonder what he’s doing here?
He was chatting with a group of bizarrely-dressed people, and a red-haired guy stood beside him nodding.
As I tried to guess who they were, I incidentally made eye contact with Gavin.
MC: ...Oops. He saw me.
I tried to play it off, but I couldn’t avoid the awkward feeling of being seen out like this.
MC: ...
Gavin picked up a glass and walked over to me.
MC: (Murmuring)... We know each other. I don’t have to hide. Besides, I didn’t do anything wrong.
Gavin: What are you doing here?
MC: I... am here with coworkers...
Gavin: I watched the news today. Your shows aren’t doing well. Shouldn’t you be in the office?
MC: (Embarrassed) Just blowing off steam. Kind of a self-adjustment.
Gavin: There’s lots of ways to blow off steam. This doesn’t suit you.
Though he was being kind, I still had lingering fears from those rumors about him back in high school.
All I wanted was to put an end to this topic fast.
MC: Thanks for the reminder.
The red-haired guy came over and whispered something to Gavin.
He nodded and turned around to look at me.
Gavin: I’ve got something to deal with. You’d better go home now.
MC: Okay...
After saying goodbye, he went into a room with his friends.
I never thought a lone wolf like him would have friends. That’s surprising.
Section 3
After drinking for hours, I felt no relief, only dizziness.
Ugh... this really isn’t a good stress release valve for me.
Seeing my colleagues having fun, I decided to leave lest I spoil their evening.
I walked down the corridor to the entrance.
MC: (Relaxed) Sigh...
As I was about to go out, I was stopped by some drunks, one of them being the same man who hit on me earlier.
Passerby a: Hey, girl. Seems we are meant to be together!
Passerby b: This is Little Miss Call-the-Cops? Haha, too funny.
MC: ...Excuse me.
Passerby c: Whoa. Still got an attitude, huh? You cant get away this time.
As they pressed closer to me, I gradually became overshadowed in darkness.
...! What am I gonna do!
MC: ... Help...
Right as I was about to call for help again, I heard a familiar voice beside me.
Gavin: If you need help next time, just call me name.
I looked. It was Gavin!
Leaning against the wall with a jacket on his shoulder, Gavin stared contemptuously at the three men.
Passerby a: Who the hell are you, kid? This is none of your business.
Gavin: I’m making it my business.
Gavin: Walk away, while you still can.
Passerby b: Got some brass on you, huh? Hope you don’t take this personal.
The three guys surround Gavin.
MC: ...!
Gavin: ...
Just as the lead troublemaker is about to take a swing, Gavin takes him down with one punch.
As Gavin walks forward, the other two are terrified and back up trembling.
Passerby b: Please don’t... Bro...
I stood right where I was, petrified.
Gavin came back to me and waved his hand in front of my face, bringing me back to myself.
Soon his friends arrived.
Gavin: (Glancing at the drunkards) I gotta go. Take care of those guys for me.
The three drunks were seized by Gavin’s friends before they could run away.
-Bar Entrance-
To keep up with Gavin, I had to almost trot.
MC: Uh... Gavin...
He turned around, frowning.
MC: That was close. Really, thank you.
Gavin: Don’t mention it. I just happened to be passing by.
MC: You’re right. This is not my scene.
MC: I just wanted to let off steam. Never thought I’d almost get into an incident.
MC: But luckily you can you frea... your friends, were there to help.
Gavin: They’re my informants.
MC: Your informants?
Gavin: There are some places where I can’t show my face, so they act like my eyes and ears, gathering intel for me.
MC: I thought that was just a thing in movies.
Gavin: The real world of cops and criminals is always way more interesting than whatever’s in the movies.
MC: But why the bar?
Gavin: It’s a good cover
MC: (Suddenly understanding) Oh... I see.
Gavin: ...
Gavin: Want me to walk you home?
Though the incident is passed, I still feel a bit jumpy.
However, considering how late it was already, I decided not to bother Gavin again.
MC: Thanks, but I can take a taxi myself.
Gavin: You wanted to blow off steam, right? Don’t you think you’re even more wound up now?
Gavin: If you’ve got the time, I know a place. It’s not far.
I nodded, thinking since I probably wouldn’t sleep well tonight anyway, I might as well go along.
Section 4
The place Gavin took me to was his secret base, which turned out to be a boxing gym.
Gavin: Here we are.
Gavin threw me a pair of boxing gloves.
Gavin: Take these.
MC: What are we doing here?
Gavin took of his shirt, baring his strong arms.
MC: What... What are you doing...
Gavin: Blowing off steam. Just watch.
One after another, Gavin punched a heavy bag with forceful thuds. He wasn’t doing it fast, but every shot was packed with power.
Gradually he sped up, and his feet danced nimbly to the sway of the bag and the pace of his punches.
Soon he had finished a set, but his breath was still calm and steady.
MC: Coooool!
Gavin: Wanna try?
MC: ...Can I?
I put on the gloves and stood in front of the heavy bag.
Gavin: The first step is to dodge. Keep your eyes on the bag and move your body.
I got frightened by the incoming heavy bag and stopped back.
MC: Aaahh...!
Gavin: Don’t be afraid.
Thanks to my slow feet, I got hit by the bag again and again. It was really embarrassing.
But without a word, Gavin patiently showed me the punching motion again.
I followed his lead and punched the air.
Gavin: That’s good, but I wouldn’t make a fist that way.
MC: Huh... I’m not doing it right?
Suddenly Gavin grabbed my hand before I could ask another question.
MC: ...!
I froze and my mind went blank all of a sudden.
Gavin: You’ll hurt yourself if you do it wrong.
Gavin: Make a fist only when you’re about to make contact with the bag. Keep the front of your fist flat. Like this...
MC: Oh, got it...
Knowing how to make a proper fist, I started to punch the bag again.
MC: ...
Now the bag stood for all the problems and obstacles I was facing. And every punch was an act of defiance against them.
“Pop, pop, pop-pop” It sounded even louder in the silence of the night.
Gavin watched me quietly.
I start to keep a rhythm in my mind “1, 2, 1, 2” ...
As the bag swung at me, I punched it with all my strength. “Pow” ... Finally the last punch beat all my depression and stress back.
MC: ... Whoo!
MC: I feel so much better. Thank...
Gavin: Watch out!
The heavy bag was about to smash me when Gavin jumped in the way.
He held me tightly and just let the bag hit himself.
I couldn’t even feel the slightest impact, just the warmth from his chest.
MC: Thank you... You all right?
Gavin: I’m fine. Be careful next time.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Summary
Colleagues took me to a bar to chill out from work.
I didn’t really like the crowd and the thumping music, especially when strangers tried to hit on me. Then I saw Gavin and couldn’t believe the lonewolf actually brought a friend.
I left quietly but was concerned in an alley by the creeps who hit on me. I don’t even want to think what might’ve happened had Gavin not come to my rescue.
Gavin brought me to a boxing gym. He was good enough to fight professionally if he wanted to. Under his watch, I put the gloves on for the first time. I took a shot at the punching bag and froze when it swung back toward me! Fortunately, he pulled me out of the way and shielded me.
