Reconstructing a destroyed infected femoral head in a young lady with first stage antibiotic cement spacer.
38 years old unlucky lady, single mother, just been abandoned by her abusive husband, developed septic hip arthritis as a sequele of thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura treatment. Her severely painful hip made her bedridden for nearly 3 months in a private hospital.
Dealing with patient with so many life issue made you determined to help to alleviate her suffering and get her back to society asap.
We took out her femoral head via girdlestone procedure and cleared all the unhealthy tissue. The causative organism is MRSA that sensitive to Vancomycin. We mixed the Vancomycin with the cement powder and mould it into antibiotic-cement implant spacer. This will help to provide local therapeutic antibiotic concentratiin without causing systemic toxicity.
Seeing her walking again today gave you the greatest satisfaction in life and motivation to go further. Hopefully she will rise back from her biggest setback in life.
