No work and lockdown in effect, I thought I would best use my time in a little personal project.
Two years ago I saved two kittens who were going to be put into a shop as the owner couldn’t care for them. Having them around has brought me a lot of joy. I’ve always wanted cats when I was young and 30 years later ... finally 😂.
Constantly looking at their faces I wanted to try and illustrate their personalities. I thought, “hey this has got to be easy.” Oh man how I was so wrong.
I’m able to sketch a cat, but having their emotional expression that makes them unique I can’t seem to articulate onto paper.
Yesterday I’ve tried to draw one of my cats Ru:
Tumblr media
I thought drawing her ten times would help ... but still no breakthrough.
Yet still haven’t manage to get her emotions into the image.
Yesterday’s drawings:

Today I’m hoping to just focus on the cat’s facial expressions and get a good idea how to express Ru’s personality in the illustration.

I totally forgot to post this! I ended up finishing up my logo.
Wanted to go for something modular and dynamic to piece together parts of my personality and skills visually (into boxes).  The inspiration comes from OCAD University’s logo:
Tumblr media
You can change up the boxes to fit a certain event or theme.
My idea is to be able to change the images to certain themes for personalised CVs or clients. Something playful and a cute Easter Egg if you notice it change.

I’m planning to revamp my portfolio as well as adding an online store. I’m just experimenting on the design and feel at the moment. I really love the vaporware atheistic, but I don’t feel it fits “my brand”. I’m happy though to finally come up  with a logo that separates the MS from the JECP. As I wanted it to be clear that, that is my name. Ms Jade Elaine Catherine Panganiban. Fingers crossed something will pop up soon!

I’m starting to try and create abstract triptychs. Here is one of my cats, just as a wee motivational image to get me to do more artwork!

Had my neice stay over for a while on the summer holidays. I thought it would be nice to take her on an “artist day out”.
We went to one of my favourite cafes where they sell endless options of anything matcha. And I introduced her to a game I had got for Christmas. It’s where you roll dice to come up with a major form and a minor form to inspire a drawing.
After three rounds, my favourite was this one. The major form was a Rooster and the minor form was moss.

Want to try and get back into doodling once everyday. Thought I’d warm up with the old adventure time style but in a squiggly creepy style. Since GOT is back on ... why not add an ice throne lol.

New 3D Project
It’s been a while since I have done any 3D modelling, so me and a friend thought we join forces and re-learn together! Our plan is tore-create a scene from concept art (shown below)
Tumblr media
I’ve looked online and someone has already beaten us to it!
Check out the amazing work they did: https://www.artstation.com/artwork/lnqZG  Still this won’t stop us, as we would love to just to be able to create something like this in 3D. It might not look as amazing as the guy’s work, but we will give it a shot! At the moment I’m trying to grey box the scene so I can get the scale and atmosphere right before 3D modelling. Below you can see I have marked out the strong angles of the image so it is easier for me to see the angles of the buildings. This will help me find angle of the camera when grey boxing the environment.
Tumblr media
I’m planning to build the environment in Unity since it’s a program I’ve been wanting to learn. Finger crossed things will go smoothly!

My partner and friend are currently starting a podcast talking about current news and film. I’ve been asked to help make a logo for them. Here is the first draft of the logo - hopefully shouldn’t take too long to finalise.

I’ve been working at Your Secret Gift for about 9 months now and part of my job is to create/design prints for the company.
Here are some illustrations I have came up for a school portrait. However the patterns on the adult clothes, the men suits, hijab and the crest on the blue class have came from our stock library.
I haven’t posted in a long while so I thought I’d update on what I’ve been doing.

So me drawing everyday became a flop lol. Funnily enough the last 5 months have been a roller-coaster. I have started a new job as a illustrator assistant, and I got a kitten! I’ve waited 27 years to own a cat and now I finally have one! lol.
This image was inspired by my niece who had been creating artwork that inspired her on Instagram.  This led onto a chain effect on me which is amazing!
I’m sure all artists go through a period in time where they feel numb. Don’t want to work on anything new. An absolute void of feeling. Till an opportunity hits you and you feel inspired! Although you know that this feeling doesn’t last very long you you need to use it all up before it fade. And we have no idea when that next rush of inspiration will hit. D:
So that mix of inspiration and my new kitten had created this quick messy piece. Not sure what it’s about but I just got my feelings and inspirations on paper ... well digital paper haha.

Day 2 - 11/01/17 - Puddle. Today I was watching Big Cats in BBC iPlayer. So why not draw a cat licking out of a puddle? Funnily enough I was going to break the chain today on day 2 haha, luckily my partner gave me some encouragement to just draw something little before bed. I’m glad I did. Woo! Well let’s see how long I can keep this up!

Got some new pens for Xmas so I thought why not use them for a year drawing challenge. I picked up a list of things on Pinterest and the idea is to draw that item of the day. This will go on for the whole year. I doubt I’ll be able to draw everyday, but I’m gonna try my hardest. I’m 10 days late in the year but better late than never! Today’s word is house plant. I didn’t just want to draw a plant. Got an image on google and saw a bathroom full of plants. Thought it look cool so Just did a quick sketch with that and tested out these new pens. Well hope all goes well over the year! Fingers crossed! Let’s see how long it will take me to break the chain haha.

So I came to a massive design block. For 2 weeks trying to work text around an image it was not working out. I felt like I was a failure, a fraud, that I could not clock this piece of work.
I knew that the client wanted it to be old/retro looking, and to look like the inside the bus. I wasn’t sure how to do this. I started watching graphic design basics tutorial videos, and sure I re-learnt a few things on the way, it still wasn’t helping.
So I googled; “Stuck on layout graphic design”. And omg I felt that I wasn’t alone. So I thought instead of trying something I usually do ( have the image, colour, text and move it about, but strip everything down to grey tones and text. This helped me to make sure the information came first, so the user can read it clearly. Now that I have the text in place I can work the imagery into the piece.
Kudos to this article to get me out of my rut: https://artisanthemes.io/what-to-do-stuck-designing/

Update on bus leaflet for the Kindness Offensive. It’s hard trying to have the inside of the leaflet the same as inside of a bus while also placing the all the text to looking part of each other.

Last day at Performing Productions ☹️. Made new leaflets for the improv workshops starting next year. Love doing the work there as you have a lot of creative freedom!
