Digital Resources
An asterisk (*) following the database title indicates that access to this library-licensed resource is restricted by Yale IP address. To access these resources from off campus, see this information about using the Yale VPN.
Digital collections of primary sources:
Struggles for Freedom: Southern Africa聽A collection of thousands of digitized items relating to independence movements in southern Africa.
Apartheid South Africa 1940 to 1980聽A database of British government records drawn from various departments of the British government.
ProQuest News and Newspapers (*)聽Contains more than fifty historical newspaper collections, including the full-text of newspapers such as the Boston Globe, Chicago Defender, Los Angeles Times, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and Washington Post.
African Activist Archive Project聽A web resource from Michigan State University that has many digitized primary sources, including posters, periodicals, and audio recordings of interviews.
Center for the Study of Political Graphics (CSPG): CSPG has a collection of more than 90,000 political posters, approximately 2700 of which have been digitized and can be accessed via this link.
Background and secondary sources:
Oxford Handbooks Online (*):聽These sources are a good way to get an overview of a field or a subject fairly quickly. The articles in the handbooks are usually 10-20 pages long, provide an overview of the historiography (the arguments that have been made over time about a topic), and offer an extensive bibliography at the end.
Two key databases for finding scholarly journal articles in History are:
Historical Abstracts: Articles on all areas of the world except for the U.S. and Canada are indexed by this database.
America: History and Life: This database indexes articles on the U.S. and Canada.
Please note: The full-text of articles is not always available via these databases. If you find an article citation without full-text, you can request a copy of the article via InterLibrary Loan.

Search Portals
Yale Library Catalog (Orbis): 聽Searches the books, e-books, journals, government documents, and other physical and digital items owned by the library. Individual journal articles are not retrieved by the search; neither are Law Library items (see Quicksearch for these). It can be used to find primary and/or secondary sources.
Quicksearch: 聽A combined search of the library鈥檚 books, journal articles, databases, and more. Includes items from MORRIS, the Law Library鈥檚 online catalog. Consider this a Google-like search of a vast amount of resources, but keep in mind some library materials are not indexed by the search.
Borrow Direct: 聽Use the Borrow Direct platform to find and borrow books from partner libraries when our copy is checked out or we do not own the item.
Yale Finding Aids:聽聽 Finding aids are the guides that tell you what types of unique, rare materials you will find in the archives held in Yale鈥檚 special collections. They provide a box-by-box inventory of materials in these sometimes voluminous archival collections (the Henry Kissinger Papers, for example, comprises well over 1000 boxes). We currently have two platforms for searching for archival collections held in the special collections units of the Yale University Library (the same data is searched in both):
Yale Finding Aid Database: This is the long-standing search portal for special collections at Yale and will no longer be available after the fall 2018 semester.
Archives at Yale: This is the new search portal for finding archival materials at Yale and offers a more nuanced set of search features.
Primary Sources at Yale: 聽An engaging introduction to what primary sources are, how to use them, and where to find them at the Yale University Library.
