Raf Simons Autumn/Winter 2002 "Virginia Creeper". I've long been a fan of Raf's early work as he draws on similar inspiration when it comes to his designs.

We can see in this collection a reference to Martin Margiela's Autumn/Winter 2000 collection with the adoption of oversized outerwear. Lapels take up a quater of the real estate of jackets and trench coats, sweaters hemlines reach to the knees with sleeves extending past that, hoods drape over the eyes obscuring all but the mouth and chin of the models.

Another interesting tid-bit of information is the use of outdoor fabrics like nylon and gore-tex in the construction of garments. These materials were wildly unpopular with designers at the time, and it would take another 20 years for the likes of nylon and gore-tex outdoor wear to become popular in online fashion communities, a trend known as "gorpcore".

The unconventional silhouettes and fabric made for a collection that was far ahead of its time, and is the reason why Virginia Creeper stands as a key runway in Raf's career.
