Purchasing a mountain bike online saves you the hassle of having to visit a brick and mortar store. It can also help you avoid warehouse and inventory costs. However, it can be challenging to pick the correct size if you are browsing online.

Before we get into that, here’s some more information about the anatomy of a mountain bike and how each part should inform your decision:

Frame Sizes

All bikes have a different feel to them, regardless of the similarities between their builds. The process that manufacturers use for sizing bikes often differs. Traditionally, the seat tube length is measured. However, some people measure to the top of the seat tube, while others only measure to the middle of where the seat tube meets the top tube.

A lot of manufacturers use the XS, S, M, L, XL, sizing. The two most important measurements to consider when you are considering frame size is the seat tube length and top tube length.

Standover & Seat Tube Length 

The seat tube is supposed to leave you with an adequate standover gap and a usable standover clearance. To measure this, stand as far back as you can while you are still over the bike and make sure there is at least an inch of room from the top tube to your crotch.

If you consider this advice, your frame should have a large adjustment range, which will help you find the right saddle height.

Reach and Top Tube Length

Another important factor to consider is the top tube length. Along with stem length, handlebar positioning, and seat positioning, top tube length is what determines how comfortable and efficient your bike’s body will be.

Microshift isn’t the worst set up. However, there are better options out there. With Microshift, you might notice some shifting if you’re doing a lot of uphill trail work. The derailleurs shouldn’t give out, but they don’t do well in maintaining tension in the long run.

Brakes and Tires

Depending on the size of the frame you choose, your bike will either come with 27.5” tires or 29” tires. The Cannondale Trail 6 29er is just a slightly larger model with a larger frame. Regardless of the tire, all of them will be WTB Ranger Comp 2.25”.

These tires use a micro-square tread to give a lot of traction on even the smoothest of rides. The knobs aren’t too big and won’t slow you down on paved roads. The only time the small knobs could present an issue is in wet or muddy conditions when they might not grip as well.

A mountain bike like this one has lots of stopping power with its Shimano MT200 hydraulic disc brakes. With 160mm rotors fitted on the front and rear wheels, you’ll have equally distributed force when stopping. If you press the braking levers with your hands, you’ll feel the serious kind of control it promises.

Your helmet is not a place to choose the cheap option and be done with it. An uncomfortable helmet can make or break the enjoyment factor of a ride. A helmet that doesn’t fit properly can increase your potential injuries during a crash.

Full face helmets provide extra protection when compared to a half-shell. It covers more of your head, neck, and face. Specifically, your entire occipital lobe, temporal area, both ears, and entire jaw are protected.

Another plus of this style is its ability to control the rotational forces your head and neck experience during a crash. Half-shell styles can protect you from impacts of rocks or branches that contact with your head. However, they leave the twists, turns, and tweaks that result from those hits to occur as they may.

Breathability

For years, the stuffy, uncomfortable nature of a full face helmet lead people to choose the less safe, but more comfortable option. Luckily, as technology and the popularity of the sport has advanced, so has the design of mountain bike helmets. Today, helmets have incorporated vents, air channels, and liners that don’t trap in air and heat.

A key feature to look for is the padding material. The most comfortable helmets use open-cell foam covered with a soft, wicking fabric. This prevents the helmet from bouncing around and banging into your head. It also keeps air circulating, prevents sweat from pooling between you and the helmet, and adds to the overall comfort.

Another important consideration is how well you can physically breathe in the helmet. The last thing you want is to be choosing between riding at your limit and playing it safe in order to breathe easily. The chin guard is where all of this happens.

First, look for how close the chin guard sits to your mouth. You’ll want a helmet that sits slightly away from your face, but not so far that you’ll crash into it during a fall. When choosing a helmet, we encourage you to look at the number of pads and the variety of thicknesses they come in. This ensures most riders will be able to find a secure and comfortable fit.

Second, look at the dial on the back of the helmet or check that it is there at all. These allow you to adjust and readjust while on the trail. You shouldn’t have to take your gloves off or fiddle with lots of straps and buckles to make micro adjustments to your helmet fit. Most of the helmets that made our favorites list include this feature. However, not all of them do. If you’ll be going on long rides or across a variety of terrain types, this becomes essential for maintaining comfort.

Visor

While most road cyclists will choose to wear a hat or visor underneath their helmet to protect their face from the sun, it’s impossible to squeeze one in comfortably under a full-face setup. That’s why most mountain bike helmets will have a built-in visor. Not only will the visor keep the rays out of your eyes, but it will also protect you from rain or even limbs and branches along the trail.

When looking at the visor on your potential helmet, check out how easy (or not) it is to adjust. Sometimes you’ll want to push the visor out of the way or slide your goggles up off of your eyes. It’s important to be able to make these changes with ease. The options here vary greatly between helmet designs. Some don’t move at all, some visors slide up with plenty for room for goggles, and some can be pushed out of your sight line only a little. The best comes down to personal preference.

A final consideration is the attachment style of the visor. Many use screws that can be adjusted by hand. However, some need tools to achieve the perfect connection. We prefer the hand adjustment option. One more tool to remember and keep track of is unnecessary and annoying in our book.

Chin bar style

Full face mountain bike helmets come with two different styles of chin bar, regular and convertible. The difference is exactly as the name implies. Regular chin bars are built in as part of the helmet construction. Convertible chin bars can be removed and reattached as desired.

Deciding between a regular and convertible chin bar comes down to personal preference.

Convertible options are especially beneficial for riders who mix up their riding style and terrain type often. Removing the chin bar allows you to have the best of both worlds. You can ride with a half-shell helmet for climbs or more moderate rides and then go into full-face mode for the next aggressive downhill portion. Additionally, if you find the chin bar of your full face mountain bike helmet uncomfortable or suffocating, then you might want to try a convertible option.

That said, new full-face mountain bike helmet designs are breathable and comfortable. With the built-in ventilation, they are much less constricting than ever before. Plus, with the convertible options, you have the extra step of storing, attaching, detaching chin bar during your ride.

It is easy to customize the fit with the variety of size and thickness pads that come with this helmet. The Fidlock magnetic buckle system is easy, even when you’re wearing gloves. The visor is adjustable.

The Rampage Pro Carbon is designed perfectly, down to tiny elements like ear spacing. A large variety of pads come with it, including one for the chin strap.

In both modes, the Super DH breathes well. With 19 vents, the air is moving, and the helmet feels light. Even though the design isn’t as focused on bringing air in as other models, you won’t find your head feeling trapped and stuffy.

The design includes 15 intake vents and 9 exhaust vents. As an added breathability bonus, the visor position feeds air into the vents. This does mean that the visor is not adjustable, but especially for those who get hot quickly, it could be acceptable in this case.

Furthermore, the liner system is moisture-wicking with antimicrobial properties to further supplement the cool and comfort of your head.

The downsides to this helmet are more than you’d hope for at this price point. First, the frontal pad is narrow, which can be uncomfortable if it’s not sitting just right. Second, the only way to adjust the cheek fit is through pads, not the main liner. Finally, there is nowhere to mount your accessories.

All of that said, for the extremely safety conscious who love to feel air moving around inside their helmet, the ProFrame is an excellent choice.

Leatt DBX 4.0

Price: $229.99 Weight: 886 grams for size large

Though heavy when compared to other models, the DBX 4.0 is a safe, comfortable, and more affordable full face option. 22 vents keep air moving around the head, though the full liner keeps in warmth more than others. If you live in a warm climate and like to climb as well as rock the downhill portions, this may not be your ideal helmet. However, the chin bar is removable, so don’t rule it out until you’ve tried it.

Protection

There’s no denying that mountain biking comes with inherent risks, especially for your feet. You can hit a rock or root, smack against bushes or branches, and catch some gnarly falls. It’s crucial that your feet – and sometimes ankles – don’t take the brunt of it.

All mountain biking shoes of any value have toe caps. These help protect your toes when you stub them on a rock or root. If your shoes do not have this, you might be in for quite a few stings along your rides.

After the toe cap, all consistency in the protective features of shoes disappears.

Cross-country riding most often occurs over longer distances and slightly less extreme terrain. As such, cross-country riders focus more on the ability to create and maintain power than on protecting from falls.

All-mountain, downhill, and freeride shoes are much more burly. They have cushion around the foot and ankles to keep you safe and comfortable during falls. These styles often have more shock absorption in the soles to keep your feet from hurting during rocky, rooty trails.

The primary downside to lace up MTB shoes is the potential for laces to get caught in the pedal or bike. Boa dial and ratchet systems are a closure style that is more minimal and modern than laces. They work by turning dials that control either elastic “laces” or plastic fasteners. These are quick and easy to adjust while you’re on the trail and have your bike gloves on. Plus, they’re extremely aerodynamic and streamlined. Nothing is at risk of getting caught on the trail or your bike.

Velcro closure systems can be used either on their own or as a secondary closer for dial and ratchet systems. You’re most likely to see velcro used alone on more casual mountain biking shoes. These are not quite as snug or precise when closed, but they are faster to put together than laces and less complicated than dial and ratchet setups.

Walkability

If you are getting out in the backcountry or taking on longer bikepacking trips, you’ll need shoes that do more than work hard on the bike. They’ll also need to be comfortable, capable hiking shoes as well.

Unfortunately, the characteristics you look for in a good mountain bike shoe are almost the opposite of those you desire in a hiking boot.

It’s important to look for hybrid shoes that can provide the best of both worlds. You’ll want a shoe that is flexible enough to walk, but stiff enough to transfer your power into your pedaling. Another consideration is a shoe that is solid enough to protect your feet from sharp rocks while still being light enough to not add too much weight to your overall bike adventure setup.

Sole stiffness

The stiffness of the mountain bike shoe sole is directly related to the amount of power you can send into the pedals. More stiff shoes provide maximum power while more flexible shoes create less.

More rigid shoes are typically designed for racing and extremely serious riders. They often have carbon fiber soles for maximum power transfer. These shoes are often less comfortable and awkward to walk in. We do not recommend rigid shoe options for beginners.

Casual riders should typically look for a balanced shoe that you can walk in and still ride hard. These shoes have more flexible soles made of rubber. Reinforced midsoles ensure that you can still power through your ride, but also walk comfortably.

Weight

In most sports, weight becomes everything, especially in the outdoor recreation world. However, you won’t hear about the weight of bike shoes as often as you might expect. That’s because, in the current market, there isn’t much weight variation without a change in features.

As you’ll see on our favorites list, unless you’re choosing a shoe that is primarily for racing or downhill, there’s not much of a difference. Heavier shoes often add ankle support for extra protection along with comfort on downhill rides or courses with lots of walking. Lighter shoes are less comfortable and can slow you down when hiking with your bike, but are perfect for races.

Weather protection

It probably goes without saying, but different weather conditions will demand different capabilities from your mountain bike shoes. Below you’ll see the most common trail weather conditions and how to be best prepared for them.

Water

Riding in the rain or through puddles happens to even the most fair weather riders. Luckily, most MTB shoes have synthetic or leather uppers and a DWR coating. These resist moisture and keep your socks and feet drier. For most riders, this is sufficient water protections.

There are some great waterproof shoes on the market if you will be riding in extremely wet conditions often. However, waterproof shoes do not breathe as well and are more cumbersome. Plus, they take a long time to dry if they do get wet inside.

For those often riding in the rain or snow, we recommend neoprene covers or booties to add warmth and water resistance. They are often more comfortable and affordable than waterproof shoes while doing the same work. These covers can tear but are worth the risk to keep your feet dry without them overheating.

Mud

Mud is a given mountain biking. In fact, we think mountain biking is sometimes more fun as a result of the splatter and splashes through mud puddles. To make mud clean up easier, choose shoes with few seams, smooth fabric, and covered laces.

Cold weather

Few things can turn a fun ride miserable like cold, numb feet and toes. For journeys in cold weather, winter-specific shoes can be extremely beneficial. These are often insulated with waterproof liners and sealed cleat beds to keep water out. Their closure systems are designed to be adjusted with gloves on.

Winter shoes are not for everyone and year-round riding but can keep you out on the trails if you don’t live with perfect weather all the time. If you choose to add some of these to your collection, consider going up a half or full size to make room for warm, thick socks. Then you’re sure to be cozy and happy on the snowy trails.

The Privateer R is an affordable shoe that is also well-made. It is not a shoe optimized for racing but can keep up with most MTB riders.

The only time you might find the Privateer R lacking is in its protection of your feet. The toe box is solid and takes impacts well. However, the shock absorption could be better, as could the padding on the sides of your feet.

When walking, the Privateer R is decently comfortable and capable. The rubber traction is excellent for moderate trails. If you’re expecting long hikes or rocky trails, these shoes might not be your ideal choice. That said, for an option that costs at least $30 less than its closest competition, you might find yourself alright with the small comfort sacrifices these clipless shoes require.

If you’re on the hunt for a stylish racing shoe, then you may have finally found your perfect shoe. The 2FO is excellent for riders who refuse to compromise looks or function during endurance races.

Additionally, a firm, nylon plate in the sole reduces energy loss as you pedal and keeps you strong while you’re moving forward. The sleek, race-focused design does require some acceptance of discomfort. For starters, the rigid sole makes hike-a-bikes uncomfortable, and the lack of traction often leads you slipping along the trail. Furthermore, the low collar leaves your ankles open to scrapes and scratches. This is easily eliminated by wearing tall socks, however. Our final complaint is that the closure system doesn’t open up very far, making it a struggle to squeeze your foot into the shoe. Once it’s in, though, it’s smooth sailing and worth it.

This all-purpose shoe works hard for the rider who does it all. It can transition from daily work commutes on the bike to weekend rides on the singletrack and even perform for occasional races. If you only want one MTB shoe in your collection, this is a great option.

There’s no denying it – these shoes are heavy. Believe it or not, the Chamber II is much lighter than the previous versions of this shoe. Often, we’re all about shaving weight. But in this instance, we think the heft and everything this shoe has going for it is well worth it.

On the surface, the Chamber II doesn’t look like a bike shoe. It has the air of a skate shoe mixed with a casual sneaker. Don’t be misled by its stylishness, though! This almost seamless upper makes it easier to clean off the mud and trail dirt. The Vibram sole leads to comfortable hiking while remaining strong enough to provide the power of a rigid shank.

A key feature of the Chamber II is the set back of the cleat. This positions the clip right at the ball of the foot. The midfoot placement provides more control and less foot fatigue on long rides.

This dense, and heavily featured, shoe is not for every rider. However, if you’re a serious rider who hits trails hard, you’ll find yourself appreciating the power transfer, durability, and protection of the Chamber II.

Shimano SH-ME3

Price: $100 Weight: 1 lb, 8.2 oz Designed for: Cross country and all-mountain riding

For our MTB-ers on a budget, this is another reliable option. For a shoe around $100, the ME3 holds its own for casual riding. It maintains many of the features of more expensive models while not breaking the bank.

Most remarkable is the comfort and walkability of the ME3. The sole is actual rubber that bends and grips while you hike or move around the parking lot. Its premium buckling system stays clear of your bike and creates one less situation for you to worry about along your rides.

Its downsides? The biggest downside for us is the lack of power we’re able to generate from the softer sole. Additionally, it doesn’t have the most protection for your toes, ankles, or heels. Plus, as a newer model on the market, we are yet to see if it holds up long term.

For an affordable, all-around shoe that’s comfortable and functional, the ME3 is a decent option.

Five Ten Hellcat Pro

Price:$180 Weight: 2lbs, 6oz Designed for: Downhill riding

The Five Ten Hellcat Pro is the perfect shoe – for the right rider. If you’re a downhill rider who cares more about foot protection than anything else, this is the choice for you. The reinforced sole has extra cushioning to protect your feet from the impacts of big jumps and hard landings. Your toes, heels, and ankles are protected with burly design features as well.

The downside to all of these protections is the weight that comes with them. Average riders will not be able to exert the same force with these heavy shoes that they can with lighter options. The last shoe to make our top 10 clipless models list is the Scott MTB Comp Boa. We love this shoe for road riders who are beginning to try mountain biking. It fits and rides like a traditional road biking shoe, while still holding up to the rigors of trails.

Most bikes that made our top 10 list fit into similar categories. All have front suspension and aluminum frames. Our favorites include 27.5- or 29-inch wheels, but that’s it. For full or rear suspension, different tire sizes, or lighter frames, you will have to spend more money.

Why would you want a more expensive version?

For most hobby riders and weekend warriors, a thousand dollar mountain bike can handle everything they put it through. They’re durable and agile. Really, there are only two reasons we can think of that you shouldn’t consider one the bikes on our list.

First, if you’re training to race. While all of the bikes on this list are fantastic, they cannot compete on the trail with bikes that have all the bells and whistles. Someone racing a bike with full suspension, a lighter weight frame, or high tech components would have an edge that’s hard to beat.

Similarly, if you’re going to be riding extremely rough roads or over intense obstacles, these bikes might not be for you. We’re talking trails that you see on crazy internet videos, not anything you’d find on a typical ride challenging. If you’re riding this hard, you are not a beginner anymore, and it might be time to upgrade your bike accordingly.

What should you look for?

When it comes time to purchase a new bike, there are a few critical factors to consider. Knowing what you want before you go searching for your new bike will help ensure you are happy with your purchase for years to come. Everyone’s preferences and needs in a bike are different.

Riding Surface

It’s no secret that trails are different depending on where you live. Wooded forest trails have unique conditions when compared with desert or high mountain tracks. Sandy areas and swampy regions bring their own challenges as well. It makes sense that each of these areas would require different characteristics for the ideal mountain bike.

Areas with long, defined trails require less suspension and agility in your bike. Rocky paths become uncomfortably quickly if you are traveling without a lot of cushion. Before purchasing your next bike, take some time to familiarize yourself with the areas you will ride most often. Your future self will thank you.

Suspension

Suspension refers to the amount of shock absorption a bike includes. Suspension travel, or the distance that the fork can compress, is how suspension is measured. Further travel implies more suspension which creates more comfortable landings after big drops or technical terrain.

Most options available under $1,000 – and every bike that made our list – include front suspension only. Full suspension bikes – when there’s cushion on both the back and the front – tend to cost more. If you’ll be riding super rough trails, it might be worth increasing your budget to be more comfortable in the long run.

The catch with suspension is that it adds a lot of weight to the bike. Before you make your purchase, weigh your personal needs and if the comfort or weight is more important to you.

Weight

How much your bike weighs matters for a few different reasons. Again, like every aspect of your bike, the perfect weight depends entirely on you and the adventures you’re planning to take.

Lighter bikes are easier to negotiate around tight obstacles and over technical surfaces. Additionally, the lighter your bike, the less weight you have to work to move up hills.

The catch? Lighter bikes require lighter components which are often much more expensive. Most of the bikes on our list fall within a few pounds of each other. A general rule of thumb is that the less-expensive the bike, the heavier it will be. How much that weight or lack thereof is worth, depends on you.

Gears

Gears help you control the amount of power that you’re putting into and getting out of your bike. So, it’s easy to assume that more speeds allows you more control and therefore is preferable. As with much of cycling equipment, what seems logical is not always true.

More gears are sometimes less intuitive to use. When you’re working hard and are in the zone, the last thing you want is to be tripped up trying to figure out where you need to shift. Often, a more straightforward process is preferable.

Also, gears can become heavy fast. Fewer gears will keep your bike lightweight, nimble, and up for anything. Even if you can’t control quite as much, the difference in the heaviness of your bike could be worth it.

Tire size

The MTB’s on our list have either 27.5-inch, 29-inch, or both tire size options. These sizes have become the industry standard and are comfortable for most individuals.

Bikes with 29-inch wheels, sometimes called 29er’s, offer the most traction and stability. It provides the ideal characteristics to work through both uphill and downhill paths. Particularly for taller riders, a 29er is the most commonly preferred option.

Shorter riders and those concerned with their bike’s weight, are more comfortable on the 27.5-inch designs. However, the size of the bike frame matters more than the wheels, and the right fit can make tires of any size comfortable for almost any rider.

The number one benefit to the DRT 1.2 is the way it is set up to grow with you as you become more involved in the sport and begin to tackle harder trails. However, it will probably be a while before you feel the need to start updating components. The 120mm fork ensures a comfortable ride even over the biggest bumps, roots, or drops. There’s also a remote fork lockout if you’ll be covering smoother ground for a bit.

The stock model of this bike may not include some of the high-end components found on others on the list, but the whole package and the fact that it comes from one of the most respected brands in the outdoor industry makes it a no-brainer good choice. You can’t go wrong with the DRT 1.2.

Cannondale Trail 7

Another benefit of purchasing a Kona bike is the lifetime frame warranty. This increases the confidence that you’re spending your money on a product that will last. The bike components are of a technology and quality you can rely on as well.

The one downside to the Mahuna is its lack of sizing options. This bike only comes in the 29-inch wheel option. If you’re shorter than 5’8”, finding either a women’s or men’s 27.5-inch wheeled bike might be more comfortable.

If you’re willing to pay a bit more for the Specialized name and the confidence it instills, but don’t quite have the budget for one of their other models, then this will be a great bike for you.
