“ i call injustice! “   he shouts, faux-outrage in full effect now. a less experienced player in their oddly endearing game might’ve broken form and snickered by now, but matsukawa was a SEASONED participant by now. 

“ i told you man, i didn’t have connection! and i didn’t want chips then but i do now! are you gonna starve your best friend? your other half? the apple of your radiant eye? “   and as with most of their banter, it got progressively more flirtatious as it went on.

there is a dalliance between his smile and sincerity that matsukawa’s question makes all the more evanescent.  blindsided by the servery of it,  oikawa flounders a bit to find the effort to conflate insouciance with the vestigial contentedness and hopes for once that issei isn’t paying close enough attention to notice the crack in his facade.  present company  —  least to all his knowledge and experience  —  has never fallen for his usual tricks of faux vacuity nor circumlocution but hell,  if he doesn’t try.

“ and what dream would you be referring to,  mattsun,  hm ? ”  

he gives no breadth for answer,  immediately delving into a diversion,  “ the nightmare of iwa-chan chasing me around the gymnasium with a beetle that i had last night ? because if that’s the dream in mention,  no,  it has not and i hope you understand i’m going to have to kill makki immediately for breaching my sacred trust ! ”  

oikawa becomes the pitiable victim,  lower lip jutting out pathetically to seal the role.  for all he really knows this is the exact dream mattsun had been alluding to  ( he certainly knows by now that secrets told to hanamaki or matsukawa will find their way to the other )  —  though he doubts it. mock suspicion shrinks doe eyes to slivers,  “ why ?  were you planning on giving hajime a beetle to harass me with — because that’s just mean, matsukawa issei, cruel even and i never thought you to be so.  it was always hanamaki’s specialty. ”  he leans into his flare for the dramatic,  rambling to eschew emotional vulnerability.

❛ no , no , no , no !! ❜ hands are thrown to hold matsukawa at bay , arm’s length preferably for his SANITY / his palpitating heart . head is bowed uncharacteristically , his previous confidence washed away within seconds . ❛ stop being so cocky , i’ll call iwaizumi - san on you . ❜

❛ you’re forgiven , you’re forgiven ! please stop in favor of my life span . ❜ his arms , once straightened falter to angle at his elbows as he drops his head onto matsukawa’s chest . emitting a soft whine through a tight-lipped expression. ❛ you’re cruel , scary ! where do you get off being this bold ?? ❜

“ pfthahaaa! “   comes his muffled chuckle from his cheek being smooshed by hanamaki’s hand holding him away. but soon enough his friend is closing the distance and he brings his own hand up to ruffle the other’s strawberry blonde hair. 

“ i just go along with what you start. not my fault you can’t keep up sometimes. “   he teases, low voice obviously amused by the other’s state.

grabs air blown kiss , throws kiss into a blender , turns on the blender .

at first, matsukawa has a mind to play along. to clutch his heart and act like hanamaki has betrayed him to the utmost degree. but then he has another idea. he nods sagely with folded arms. 

“ making it into a smoothie to make it last longer, huh? if you wanted more of my air kisses you could just say so. “

there’s a lot of merit in being alone. for example, where else is oikawa free to sing, prance, and wiggle his half-dressed ass to his heart’s content? solitude is king, and so is he. 

but something is amiss. a sense. call it intuition. from the dark confines of the hallway, he suspects danger is afoot, so he begins hobbling his a-feet. quietly, quietly… he tries his damnedest to put his best ear forward, listening intently as he slips out of his jersey. 

and, like, nearly jumps out of his skin. “ — AAAAAWHAAA? USHIWAAAA—KAAAAAAA?” karate. those same instincts, the one he praised, lead him straight to inexperienced, wildly inaccurate karate. in his nasa boxers. with his head stuck in the arm-hole of his jersey. he wooshes, he spins, he falls, but most importantly  — he can’t see, and doesn’t know it’s actually matsukawa intruding on his privacy. 

“HOW DID YOU GET IN HERE? POLICE? I’M —  I’LL CALL THE POLICE! HAND ME MY PHONE, UGLY! FIND MY PHONE AND CALL THE POLICE ON YOURSELF — ”

it took just about ALL of matsukawa’s energy and self control to slap a hand over his mouth ( ouch! ) and muffle his sure to be ROARING laughter to nothing more than faint ‘mmphs’ from his position behind oikawa. why didn’t he have his phone? this would have been the crown jewel of all blackmail on hanger-san. and then oh my god he’s falling and screaming. 

it’s oikawa’s mouth that is his downfall. because as soon as he does, matsukawa can’t help himself as he lets out an UNGODLY wheeze before his laughter follows. 

“ BWAHAHAHHAHAAAAA??! “   the middle blocker wipes his eyes, cheeks beginning to hurt from his laughter.   “ you sure about that, captain? by the looks of things, they’d probably think you were the ugly intruder! “

matsukawa’s large brows raise at his friend’s retort. it’s one thing he always loved, how quick he was with smart ass replies that both caught him off guard and made him laugh. and once hanamaki’s arm is out, he only waits a moment ( or two ) before he decides to loop his arm right through, grin wide as he leans forward just a bit to close some distance.  

“ annnnnd what price is that? “

the chance to let your talent truly blossom, perhaps it’s today. or maybe, it’s tomorrow, the day after tomorrow, or next year… but if you, yourself think that you don’t have talent, then you’ll probably never have it.

matsukawa’s own grin ( albeit lazy in nature ) widens at hanamaki’s very visible reaction. it may or may not bring a dusting of pink to his own cheeks, but he can easily ignore that in favor of the other’s more FLUSTERED state. 

“ oh? do i need to kiss the other cheek too? “   his tone does not betray his teasing intentions but his eyes certainly do.   “ you’ve got a pretty expensive forgiveness policy. “

matsukawa happened to be on late practice duty this fine friday evening. mostly set up to make sure oikawa didn’t work himself into the ground. again. and when he notices that the other is still getting ready in the locker room... well how can he pass up a perfectly good chance for some totally light teasing? he practically TIPTOES into the locker room, counting his blessings that oikawa is in the middle of slipping on his jersey. he crouches down and then cups his hands around his mouth before he ( in his best, comically deep-voiced impression ) bellows.
